Why Día de los Muertos is ripe for Buddie development

First, the symbolism of Día de los Muertos (honoring, remembering, connecting with those who passed) pairs beautifully with both characters’ emotional baggage:

Eddie carries grief over Shannon’s death and struggles with Christopher without her. He is also dealing with the fact he was not there when Bobby died.

Buck carries loss (his surrogate father figure Bobby, crises he’s endured) Buck has huge emotions and we really haven’t seen much of those emotions surrounding Bobby.

An episode that centers on remembrance, hauntings (literal or metaphorical), and confronting the past can naturally lower defenses. It invites characters to reveal inner wounds, lean on one another, and experience mutual empathy.

Also, we already have hints that this episode will be an Eddie episode where he is quick to believe in supernatural stuff alongside Buck. 

So the stage seems primed for deeper intimacy (emotional if not romantic) between them.

If this episode centers on Eddie processing loss (Bobby, Shannon, maybe even parts of himself), Día de los Muertos is all about recognizing love that transcends death meaning the kind of love that endures.

That’s sets an emotional ground for Eddie to realize:

Who’s been there through everything.

Who feels like “home” to him now.

Who he’s scared to lose next.

And that, of course, is Buck.

To me this could be a quiet moments  maybe at an altar or while comforting Christopher (this is where that photo of Eddie in the leather jacket comes in) where he realizes the person he wants by his side in every life event isn’t Shannon or someone new… it’s Buck. 

This also would be perfect storytelling leading into Bucks dating story. 

If Eddie realizes his feelings first (in a spiritual/emotional episode) and Buck dates someone else right after, that creates the perfect romantic arc tension:

Eddie’s realization (emotional awakening, internal conflict.)

Buck’s dating ( external distraction, testing connection.)

Eddie’s jealousy (proof of real feelings) leading to a confusion → slow realization → confession later.

All leading to buddie.

okay i’m back on my soapbox about my boy Ryan Guzman and how unreal his acting is to bring eddie diaz to life.

like the lingering looks? the way his whole face softens with just a tiny eyebrow raise? insane. i’ve ranted about that before but listen! Eddie is a character who pushes EVERYTHING down.

and the detail?? almost every single time eddie starts to feel something, when he’s on the verge of crying, he does this little head shake. like he’s physically trying to push the emotion away. he does it over and over throughout the show.

it’s such a small choice but it tells you EVERYTHING about who Eddie is. a man who’s been taught to swallow his feelings until they choke him.

Ryan guzman, you didn’t have to go that hard but you DID.

Buddie season 9 spiral

Okay but hear me out — we all know Buck feels everything, right? Like, he’s the guy who wears his heart on his sleeve and experiences emotions in full-volume, all-or-nothing ways. But season 8? The death of Bobby hits him hard, and what do we see? Almost nothing. No huge breakdown, no tears spilling over, no wild, chaotic grief that makes you want to hugg him.

If we don’t get a full-blown Buck emotional meltdown in season 9- the kind where he can’t hold it together, where Eddie has to literally rock him in his arms and calm him down — I quit. I refuse. I will not accept a world where Buck’s grief is muted. He needs that moment, the one that reminds us exactly how big his heart is, and how much he loved Bobby.

Like, give me the messy, raw, chaotic Buck sobbing on Eddie’s shoulder. Give me Eddie whispering, “I’ve got you. I’m right here. You’re safe.” Give me the kind of moment that makes you want to curl up on your floor with a blanket because your heart hurts so good.

Because if Buck doesn’t have that, are we even watching him live?

Why Buck and Eddie Complement Each Other as Romantic Partners

What makes Buck and Eddie so compelling isn’t just the chemistry or the pining (though that’s definitely there)—it’s the way they balance each other out in ways no one else can.

when people talk about why buck and eddie work, it often comes down to their differences and how those differences fill in the gaps the that other leaves behind.

buck’s personality is bright, outward, and emotional. he’s someone who throws his whole heart into everything, sometimes to the point of recklessness. we see this again and again across the series: whether it’s his devotion to christopher, his fierce loyalty to the 118, or the way he constantly seeks connection/validation. buck is “sunshine” he wears his emotions openly, which is both his strength and his vulnerability.

eddie, on the other hand, is far more guarded. he’s introverted, cautious, and often internalizes his struggles until they boil over. he’s steady and level-headed in a crisis, but we also see his possessive streak—his protectiveness over christopher, his instinct to close ranks when he feels threatened. where buck seeks openness, eddie’s instinct is control.

what makes their relationship dynamic powerful is how those qualities interact.

buck brings out eddie’s light. with buck, we see eddie laugh more, let go more, and allow himself moments of softness that don’t come naturally elsewhere. buck’s childlike energy disarms eddie’s walls and gives him permission to feel “joy”.

eddie grounds buck. when buck spirals—questioning his worth, chasing validation, or throwing himself into danger. eddie is often the one person who can cut through the noise and bring him back to himself.

this balance is highlighted in their conflicts. their arguments (season 3’s lawsuit fight, season 8’s blow-up) aren’t about cruelty or tearing the other down. they’re about pushing. buck demands eddie speak emotions he’d rather bury. eddie forces buck to face truths he’s avoiding. in short, their conflict isn’t destructive—it’s catalytic. it forces growth.

that’s why they resonate so deeply. buck gives eddie vulnerability, laughter, and a reminder that love can be open. eddie gives buck stability, a sense of being chosen, and an anchor when his emotions overwhelm him.

they don’t cancel each other out—they complete each other.

Just finished watching 6x17–6x18 and my sick little Buddie brain is spiraling.

Eddie says, “proposals are kinda a big deal these days” and all I could think was… in my hypothetical (but very correct) world, Eddie Diaz would 100% be the one to propose to Buck.

But how would he do it??

Would it be some casual, intimate moment at home — Buck in sweats, hair a mess, and Eddie just blurts it out over coffee because he can’t hold it in anymore? Or would Eddie go full grand gesture, pulling out every ounce of his romantic, quietly-devoted heart and making it something Buck would never forget?

Personally, I think Eddie would plan the hell out of it, pretending it’s “just another day” until suddenly it isn’t. You know — candles, Christopher in on the plan, maybe even get Maddie involved somehow. And Buck? He’d cry before Eddie even got halfway through the speech.

911 Season 2 Episode 1 Analysis.

Okay but can we talk about how from literally the very beginning of Buck and Eddie’s dynamic, the show is already setting them up to be watched together. Like, I rewatched season 2 episode 1 and I swear to god they are EYE-F***ING each other the moment Eddie walks into frame.

It’s not even subtle! The camera lingers on their faces just long enough for you to clock the tension. Buck’s “who is that” face? Eddie’s smug little smirk? The handshake that was entirely too long?? Instant chemistry.

And Bobby??? Bobby is fully clocking all of it. The way he’s staring at Buck while Buck stares at Eddie while Eddie stares back like they're in some rom-com triangle and Bobby’s the audience surrogate. The eye work Bobby is doing in that scene is Oscar-worthy, like he knows exactly what he’s unleashing by putting those two together.

Anyway, the writers knew exactly what they were doing. This wasn’t subtext — this was capital-T Tension from the jump. Buddie didn’t “just happen,” it was built.

How did 911 fumble season 8 so hard yet give some of the best buddie moments in my opinion ever. From the kitchen fight, u-haul goodbye, and Freddie Fakeman. It was so close to buddie yet so far away.

Buck has ADHD

One of my favorite aspects of Evan Buckley is that he has ADHD, you can’t convince me otherwise and Eddie loves to listen to him talk.

Eddie knows

I fully believe Eddie is aware of his feelings but like everything pushes them down. When Eddie finally comes out I don’t think it’s gonna be a realization it’s gonna be “I can finally feel this”. I think it’s gonna be more of a realization for buck since he is under the impression his friend is straight. Any thoughts on that?
