Finished Mononoke this morning. My god what a good anime. It's been a loooooong time since I gave something a solid 10 on kitsu. No idea why I put this one off for so long tbh

It starts off strong, somehow ends stronger, and doesn't trip even once the whole way. AND it's only 12 episodes AND it gets avant garde with the animation. There's some really cool use of 3D and higher framerate 2D animation to accent the more emotional or unsettling scenes to expert effect. The art director's grasp on the digital animation medium was unreal

My only criticism is that it does the weird balloon/hotdog lips thing for the darker skinned characters, but it's a TV anime from 2007 so I'm curious to see if the more recent movies do that too or not. Other than that poor stylistic choice, the characters were otherwise super diverse and it was very refreshing. It reminded me of the kind of cast diversity Cowboy Bebop has where it makes the story/setting feel more believable and "grounded"
