Azriel’s Shadows

Elriel shippers love to use the argument that Azriel craves light and Elain will be his light that makes his shadows go away.

I think it’s interesting to read about Feyre and Nesta’s perspectives regarding Azriel’s shadows. In acomaf, Feyre notices how Azriel’s shadows seems to go away whenever Mor is around.

“Mor patted Azriel on the shoulder as she dodged his outstretched wing. “Relax, Az—no fighting tonight. We promised Rhys.” The lurking shadows vanished entirely”

Feyre notes this in Acowar about Azriel around Elain as well. Nesta notes that Azriel’s shadows disperse the moment Elain enters the room. They both paint this as a positive, implying that Azriel no longer needs to hide behinds his shadows in front of Mor and Elain, who are both people that Azriel claims to love.

We see a totally different reaction from his shadows when Gwyn is around. His shadows don’t disappear when Gwyn is around. They come alive. They dance and sing with her. Azriel has had two potential love interests and neither of them brought that out from his shadows.

I think Feyre and Nesta don’t understand Azriel’s shadows. They think that his shadows are something he wants to hide, since they are a big part of his childhood trauma. Hiding trauma is not a way to fix it, but embracing it can be. Azriel’s shadows hide from Elain and Mor. Gwyn and his shadows welcome each other.

Azriel doesn’t need light, he needs someone to brave the darkness with him.

Azriel’s POV thoughts

I know many people are upset with Azriel’s POV and I have to say, while it wasn’t what I had been hoping for, I didn’t hate it.

After five books, azriel’s first pov was a little disappointing, but in no way do I hate him. The worst part of the chapter for me was his possessiveness and entitlement towards Elain. But I think I can empathize and see Azriel’s own pain showing there. Everyone around him is moving on. Within two years, both of his brothers found happiness. As did Amren. He is feeling jealous and low and is still reeling from his feelings from Mor. He’s trying not to hurt anyone but his emotions are high. What he feels for Elain to me is clearly lust. You can tell by his “cauldron could be wrong” theory that he feels desperate.

Azriel is so lost. He believes Mor doesn’t love him, yet both Cassian and Rhysand press him on his feelings about her and ask if he will ever confess to her. He also lusts after Elain because of the acherons being with his brothers. Again, I’m not saying what he said to Rhysand was right, but I understand him.

Then there is the Gwyn situation. Everyone is upset about the necklace regifting and as someone who fucking loves Gwyn, I honestly did not think it was a big deal. Gwyn deserves the world. I think she and Azriel would be perfect based on the small snippets of them we received. But her arc is still yet to be developed and so is Azriel’s. They haven’t spent much time together yet. Azriel has no romantic feelings for her. So when Elain returned his necklace, he thought why not give it to someone who may enjoy it. Azriel wasn’t “regifting” it. He didn’t even tell her it was him who gave it! It wasn’t supposed to be some grand gesture. It was friendly. It was something even he didn’t know why he was doing. Even if it might cause drama later, that was not the point of him giving it to her.

I’m excited for Gwynriel. I’m excited to see a romantic relationship start between them. I don’t think that’s what the necklace was for. The necklace was a small act of kindness for Azriel. Simply, if Elain does not want it because they cannot be together, maybe someone else might find joy in it. He wasn’t trying to gain Gwyn’s favor or pawn it off, it was just a random act of kindness.

I can’t wait to see more of Azriel. I think he’s just as lost as Nesta was at the beginning of her book. He needs to step back from the women in his life and find his own self worth.

Thoughts on Azriel’s love interest...

I used to sort of ship Azriel and Elain but I have totally moved past that.

Now this is not because I think Azriel is too good for Elain or whatever. I think they are both quiet, peaceful, kind people—they are too alike. AND she is Lucien’s mate. I don’t want Azriel to have to fight and beg for his love after everything he’s been through.

I want Azriel to find his own mate and I want her to invoke something in him. I want his mate to make him react and emote in ways we have never seen before.

I want Azriel to get MAD at her, to LAUGH with her, to be HAPPY with her. I want her to make him sad, and jealous, and everything he hides from the world. I want whoever she is, to force him out of his comfort zone. I want her to show us a side of him we have never seen. I want Azriel to be confused on why he can’t be the quiet, calm, cool shadowsinger around her. I want Azriel to change and break free with someone he never could foresee loving.

And I don’t want it to be in the same way it was with Mor. With Mor, Azriel was willing. He was open to changing for her and he would do anything for her blindly. But I think Azriel has grown from that. He won’t be as open to changing his ways after I assume he finally gives up on Mor. I want him to be surprised by his growth by the time his mate is done with him.

Everyone saying the ACOTAR books are unreliable because they’re from Feyre’s perspective. That’s...how books work? Every book from a character’s perspective is inherently biased by their personality/worldview/experiences. If all books were objective and every character was unproblematic, they’d be boring as hell.

You learn about yourself, about relationships, about trauma, about the world by seeing things through the eyes of these characters. It’s totally valid to criticize characters for acting inappropriately, but I think it’s important to recognize that those actions are often intentional on the part of the author. Like, the author often knows those actions aren’t appropriate/healthy/etc. that’s how we get character growth and learn about the world.

Those are my thoughts, anyway.

In the defense of Aelin

I’ve been seening the complaint of how Aelin is “idolized” in the TOG books and how every character is randomly willing to die for her and that is simply not true and a flawed argument.

Aelin has conflicts with Chaol, Rowan, Lorcan, Manon, and even Aedion. She is not thought of as a perfect character at all. She is flawed. She has anger issues, she can be stubborn, she can be arrogant. People recognize that about her. The Khagans were reluctant to ally with her because she was reckless. But the reason people are willing to die for her is because she is the only person who can save their whole world. They know Aelin deep down is a good person and will fight for them all. And it does land only on her sacrifice.

This quote from EoS says it best: “And for the sake of their world, Manon prayed the Queen of Terrasen could survive it. If only so Aelin could die for them all”

Aelin, however many mistakes she makes, however arrogant she can be, will still be the one to save them all. And I don’t want to hear how she didn’t even die in the end, because her family was still murdered, people tried to kill her, she was tortured, and went through so much, only to save her country.

Many people also like to call her a colonizer and bring up what she said in EoS about expanding Terrasan. First- that was so out of character of Aelin and I think poor writing on Sarah’s part considering Aelin freed slaves of colonized nations and was a child of a colonized nation. Aelin also doesn’t strive for power like that. She is he Faerie Queen of the West but she was willing to give up the title because she didn’t want more power. Second- the way it was written was that Aelin wanted to help and improve struggling nations if she could. But again, I understand that this was just a poorly written and unnecessary point to the book. I am a POC and I understand how this could have been alarming but I don’t think it was intended to come off as colonizing but more like aid.

To summarize this long rant, I do love Aelin. I think she’s a strong female character who actually has flaws. She is a young girl, which is also something we must recognize. She manages to be badass and feminine which is rare. But again that’s all just my opinion
