Aelin came back like, "I was gone for five fucking minutes!"
Aedion Lied. Rhysand Didn’t
aedion: mask: the “Wolf of the North,” brutal general who never loses a battle for Adarlan reality: the battles are staged, the deaths are faked, and the soldiers literally get up afterward and go home
rhysand: mask: feared ruler of the Court of Nightmares who routinely terrorizes, tortures, and sexually humiliates people to maintain control reality: …he does all of that. he just feels bad about it sometimes. and also he’s very nice to a small, hidden city of people who means he’s actually a good guy, promise.
the difference is not “morality,” it’s material harm.
aedion's mask is a lie. the violence he's known for does not actually happen.
rhysand’s “mask” is just… branding.
the narrative keeps insisting that his cruelty is an act, but then: – the torture still happens – the victims still exist – the trauma is still real – the power imbalance is still enforced
“he’s pretending to be awful” only works if the awfulness isn’t real.
you do not get moral credit for being secretly kind to Velaris while knowingly ruling a court built on terror and exploitation. that’s not a mask; that’s compartmentalization.
aedion takes on a reputation so others don’t have to suffer.
rhysand maintains a reputation by making sure people do suffer and then asks the reader to applaud him because he has an inner monologue about how hard it is.
that’s not depth. that’s just doing the bad thing and insisting it counts as character complexity.
Manon: Why should I lend my army to Terrasen?
Aelin, who is rusty on her royal training: Um, you really like me??
Manon:
Manon, who also does not have much royal training: yeah why the fuck not
Just read somewhere that the thirteen sacrificed themselves for Manon but Aelin’s entire court was willing to sacrifice her and I’m repeating this again- WITHOUT LETTING HER SEE HER HOME- (of course our Rowan and Fenrys are exception to it all!)
Another moment that makes me wonder what would’ve been Sam’s reaction to it all- 😭
Guys I’m actually sick to my stomach over finishing the tog series, going back to KOA and reading these quotes:
"Live, Manon. Live"
Then
"Close the gate, Aedion."
Then
"I took his name. I wiped it away from existence. Yet be only emembered it once. Only once. The first time he beheld you."
Then
"You will not find them. In this sky, or any other."
Then
"Am i human?"
THEN
"Who?", "All."
THEN
"There was an empty space inside her where twelve souls had once burned fiercely."
Might have maimed something inside my soul forever.
The amount of people I STILL see saying the Throne of Glass series takes place over a year is BAFFLING. Did we read the same books?
Celaena ages up in Assassins Blade (believed to be 16 turning 17)
She spends a YEAR in Endovier (17 to 18)
She ages up in Heir of Fire (18 to 19)
She is almost to her next birthday by the end of Kingdom of Ash (almost 20)
For the love of god, take the context clues I beg 😫 some aren’t even clues, it is blatantly stated! Aelin starts the series at 16, and is almost 20 by KoA
Point is - it was not and never has been over a year timespan, give or take juggling the official age
It will forever baffle me that 90% of the Throne of Glass fandom are angry at the fact that Aedion was angry at Aelin & Lysandra for planning to use him as a breeding stock…mind you this male is also canonically a victim of SA…he also has trauma surrounding never knowing his bio dad until at the end when he found out it was Gavriel & Gavriel ended up sacrificing himself, he still never got a chance to know his dad…
You could never make me hate Aedion.
They’re mad that he ASKED Lysandra to leave his space, not kicked her out.
Like I genuinely can not wrap my head around this.
& yes I will be that person that says “if the roles were reversed & Aedion made plans like that for Aelin he would be ripped to pieces by the fandom”
