The last few weeks certainly hadn’t been the easiest for any of them. Severus himself had spent most of the month on sick leave thanks to both Mulciber’s attack at the beginning of the month and the splinching accident on Valentine’s day. Although he wouldn’t admit it out loud, he had found himself at a loss of things to do seeing as brewing had been out of the question. As much as he hated working for Ponter, at least he always had something to do either in the lab or the shop itself.

The afternoon of the twenty-seventh had found Severus in Hogsmeade. He had spent most of the time perusing the shelves in Tomes and Scrolls, looking for some new books to keep his mind from atrophying whilst he waited for the all clear to return to work. After settling on several books for his own use, he picked up a few for Regulus, remembering how the younger man lamented the lack of novels by Wizarding authors in Severus’ personal collection. Hopefully the books would keep him quiet for a while after Severus’ next visit.

Finally exiting the shop as the sun was beginning to set, he found himself coming to a stop outside The Three broomsticks, catching sight of a familiar mane of red hair. Lily. Shifting the stack of book under one arm, he pushed his way into the bustling pub and made a beeline to the bar.

This was far from the best idea he had had in a long time, but he just couldn’t help himself. No matter everything that happened between them, he still cared about her. That was something that would probably never change. He deliberated over his order, finally settling on a cup of tea for himself and glass of butterbeer for her. It was more than a small challenge to get the drinks and his books over to the table in one piece, with the books ending up trailing along behind him in the air.

Taking a deep breath, he sat down in the chair on the opposite side of the table. There was no going back now. He relinquished his hold on the butterbeer, taking a sip of his tea in an attempt to soothe his nerves. “I thought that you could do with something. I wasn’t sure what your preference was these days so I figured that it’d be best to go with what I know.” He commented, his tone far more confident than he felt. “It’s been a while.”

She’d hoped he'd take the hint.

Take his drink and leave before the unkind thoughts she'd been keeping to herself erupted from the vault she'd been keeping them inside of. They hadn't been friends in years but never, never had Lily considered him an enemy until recently. He let them kill her parents. In fact, he was probably the one who told Alecto and Bellatrix where to find them because who else would? Who else but her closest friends knew where to even begin looking for her parents? She'd been so mute on the subject of her home life back at Hogwarts, only mentioning her family in passing and vaguely. It had to be him and now here he was trying to offer what, his condolences?

Lily didn't want his false sympathies, she wanted his head. But more than that she wanted an explanation, why? If he was still mad at the fact that they weren't friends he should have come after her, not her poor defenseless parents. Her sweet mother who had treated him like a son and her father who despite his mistrust in magic had welcomed the boy into his home multiple times. They weren't perfect people but they didn't deserve to die, not like that. Not because of Lily.

The hands by her side were clenched so tight that the palm of Lily's hands ached. The silence between them louder than any words she could think of spitting in his direction. Relaxing her hands the ginger brought them up to the table not quite sure exactly what she wanted to do with them. A part of her, the mad part, wanted to push the glass right off the table but instead she pushed it towards him. Watching the amber liquid spill over the side from her force. "Like I said Severus, I don't want it." She replied through clenched teeth her gaze looking past him to the rest of the people milling about the pub. Both grateful and annoyed that they were there. An audience would keep her temper in check.

Despite managing to pass her Potions NEWT by some miracle, Marlene had never had a natural gift for the subject, nor for Herbology, and the apothecary had always represented some enormous mystery to her. Nothing contained within it’s walls or sitting on its shelves made any sense to her but she met it all with the same amount of curiosity that she met everything. Though sometimes she did wish it was a little easier.

Marlene grinned at Lily, turning to face away from the shelves that she thought seemed to be mocking her incompetence in the area and focusing on her friend. “I’m all out of burn salve and I need the ingredients to brew some more. I would just buy premade stuff but I’m poor and buying ingredients is cheaper. What about you?”

The laugh that left Lily was genuine, a rarity in her life as of late. It wasn't that Lily didn't laugh, so laughed plenty. It was just that most of the time it was rarely because she wanted to and mostly because she felt obligated. Obligated to laugh, to be merry, to act like this war wasn't effecting her. It wasn’t very logical but she feared that if she did let on just how big of a tole it was taking on her, that everyone else would lose their morale as well. So the ginger did was she did best, pretend. But it was impossible to hide her feelings, her worries, her desires from Marlene– if there was anyone who could read Lily like a book, it was her and as a result Marlene became one of the few people that the twenty year old never felt like she had to pretend for. Every emotion shown, thought shared, and word spoken was honest and true.

The act of being that transparent with someone while terrifying to a girl with trust issues like Lily, felt oddly freeing as well.

Tucking a strand of her fiery locks behind a freckled ear, Lily's previous amusement was immediately replaced with a burst of affection. "Well I'm about as poor as you are so I can't really offer to buy you the pre-made stuff. But we can definitely go halfsies on the ingredients and you can come over to mine and we'll make it together. I mean....you probably should be supervised." The comment was closely followed by a playful wink as Lily casually slipped an arm through Marlene's and began wandering through the store once more. Tossing the needed ingredients in her basket as they passed them. "Don't laugh....but I was bored so I decided to come here...for like....fun."
