I think what both these things highlight is that extremely conservative folks who get sucked in by Fox News are just looking for belonging. Fox News (and other things, like religion) tell viewers there's an "us" and a "them" and everybody always wants to be part of the "us."

We, as humans, crave belonging. And predatory cults - like Fox News - can prey upon the fears of not being an "us." "Look at all those dangerous evil 'thems'! If you don't stay with us you'll be with them!"

So much hate boils down to stars on thars.
