Is indie music also influenced by black artists?
girl like mumford and sons? yeah bluegrass is heavily rooted in african american music like that five string banjo thing the whites go up for??? niggas from east tennessee BEEN on that tip like
So we’re just gonna ignore The xx’s dabbling in R&B sounds?
We’re gonna ignore Vampire Weekend co-opting Afro-beat/Highlife?
We’re gonna ignore Florence + The Machine doing this stomp-n-clap choir music?
We’re gonna ignore Adele and her “amazing, flawless voice” (according to white bottoms) that is parroting black soul/r&b singers?
We’re gonna ignore Tune-Yards take on afro-beat and r&b and hip hop?
We’re gonna ignore The Black Keys riffing on Memphis soul and Stax Records sounds?
We’re gonna ignore Jack White’s obsession with blues and folk sounds?
We’re gonna ignore Phantogram literally making soul sample hip hop?
We’re just gonna ignore How to Dress Well (and inc. and Shy Girls) literally making grind time/quiet storm R&B records?
We’re gonna ignore the fact that indie is more or less a dead genre because all those former xscenex kids and indie dweebs abandoned that shit and are mining 90s R&B for vocal samples for deep house and bass music, or starting bands that are carbon copy watered down R&B that music blogs and white publications refer to it as “house-inspired” or “a nod to lo-fi beach music” or anything other than black music?
And @babyhair gave a great example about bluegrass’ black roots. (spirituals -> gospel -> blues -> ragtime -> bluegrass. you’re welcome)
Like I could truly go on and on. Anon obviously does not know this but like ALL POPULAR MUSIC OWES IT’S SOUND TO BLACK MUSIC. Like… there’s not a single form of contemporary music that is not a direct or indirect product of black music. hmu if you need a flow chart or more examples.
