When I got the email saying my work was accepted back in June, I honestly thought it was a mistake. Even as I shared the news with my writer friends, I refused to be excited in case I get that inevitable email telling me all about how sorry they were, but “your work will not be published after all.” I know that sounds silly; or maybe not (maybe some of you have thought the same). Anyway, I’m glad it’s real, and I’m honored to share a space with the talented writers featured in Passengers Journal 🙏🏼 Check out WE MAKE THE DEER and other wonderful pieces in the second issue by Passengers Journal. Kaveh grinned. “You know, it’s quite rude to start something you never intended to finish. Especially when you seemed so fond of groping my head.”

Alhaitham shoved him playfully. “I had to make sure your brain hadn’t softened, considering how you like to remind me how much older you are, Senior Kaveh.”

Kaveh shouldered him back. “Hm? This coming from someone who’s already greying? Oh, and look here—” Kaveh thumbed the space between his brow. “Is that a wrinkle I see? All that frowning at me has finally backfired, I see.” 

Alhaitham pushed him back, scowling to disarm the smile he felt creeping on his face. “If I do have wrinkles, know that it’s your absurdities at fault.” 

Kaveh arched a brow, grinning lips parting to retort. And then he stopped. Closed his mouth, and pressed his lips together in a tight, firm line.

Alhaitham watched the amusement drain from Kaveh’s face with deceitful calm. He panned a questioning gaze over the other boy’s face, catching the slight narrowing of his eyes.

“Is that… blood?”

Do you remember?

I am in prison in the city of my birthplace. A man visits me every week, brings me small confections of candied ajilenakh nuts drenched in padisarah syrup. ‘They were your favorite,’ he tells me, as if by forgetting who I was means that I am unable to relearn everything about me.

Perhaps that’s true, because I cannot taste the syrup he insists is there, cannot feel the buttery slide of ajilenakh paste he alleges is made from a recipe my mother and I devised together. I taste a thin, flavorless block that does not melt, that clumps against my teeth when I chew, that sticks in the walls of my throat when I try to swallow.

He asks me a question.

Salt of the Earth actually has a crazy interesting history- OP already said it was made in 1954, but that was in the middle of the Red Scare (communism scary cold war hysteria)

Congress’s anti-communism target fell hard on Hollywood, and those in the industry who were suspected of communism at all were blacklisted from all jobs, because studio’s didn’t want to face backlash from Congress

Salt of the Earth was made nearly 100% with blacklisted crew members from Hollywood, and had such difficulty finding actors that they hired local citizens and miners from the actual strike the plot is based on. There were only 5 trained actors involved, and one of them (Rosaura Revueltas, the woman in the gif) was deported to Mexico before they finished filming on accusations of communism, with no proof and no substance. The filming was plagued with police harassment and threats (according to my professor they were shot at more than once), and the local union hall was burned down.

The movie itself not only covers a real 1950′s labor strike demanding safer and more equal labor conditions for Mexican-American employees, but after the miners were facing arrest, their wives and children took up the strike in their place. The movie’s combination of blacklisted crew, civil rights and feminist message, and pro-union plot (during the red scare) got the movie blacklisted and only 12 theaters in the entire United States would show the movie- it was successful in Europe, but didn’t actually achieve viewership in the US until the 60′s

Consider. A human wakes up in a strange medical bay, with an alien doctor standing over them. Turns out their shuttle crashed, and the alien ship only just managed to teleport the, on board in time.

By some miracle, the doctor explains, they escaped with only minor injuries. Some burns, a few scratches and “several small wounds. We’re not sure what caused them.”

“Wounds?”

“Small holes in your ear lobes. Possibly they were old wounds and unrelated to the accident, but either way, our doctors were able to heal them for you. There’s not even any scarring.”

The human pauses. Thinks for a minute. “Wait… you unpierced my ears?!”

“Er, not exactly.  It can be redone. though it’s not gonna be fun.  But my people do that to ourselves on purpose.  It’s self-ornamental…  I don’t know the word.  We decorate ourselves with small stones and bits of shaped metal or plastic.”

“Oh!!  I’m sorry, that’s a fairly rare behavior among sapients.  Why, if I may ask?”

“uh.  It…  Looks cool?  I guess?”

“…My experience with humans is limited, but I gather that’s the reason for many of your behaviors.”
