Richard Oswald’s Different from the Others was a radical silent film produced in 1919 during the Weimar Republic. And it was almost erased from history.

Different from the Others was co-written by Oswald and renowned sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, who also played a role in the film and partially funded it through his Institute for Sexual Science. The film follows a doomed gay relationship between a successful concert violinist and one of his students and explores the impact of homophobia, conversion therapy and the threat of being outed. The film was intended to rally against Paragraph 175 of the German Penal Code, the 1871 law that criminalized homosexuality. Different from the Others is considered one of the first sympathetic portrayals of gay men in cinema, and it was praised by audiences. But conservative Catholic, Protestant and antisemitic groups protested the co-writers’ Jewish identities and the film’s thesis that homophobia, not homosexuality, was a social evil. Different from the Others was censored throughout Germany in 1920 following claims that the film would endanger public safety or turn impressionable young people gay. By October of 1920, only doctors and medical researchers were able to view it via private educational screenings.

Pre-menstrual depression is always depicted as like "He He! I had a box of icecream bars and cried while watching the Titanic!" But in reality, it's more like, "I'm standing the edge of an abyss. There is nothing good inside of me, I'm filled with rage and desperation."

It's crazy that being told how to deal with that is never a part of anyone's menstrual sex education.

I went to my doctor after I was walking to work one morning and saw a bus coming and actually took a step to throw myself in front of it before I pulled myself together. Later that day I started bleeding and was literally like someone flipped a switch and I didn't feel suicidal anymore. Which made me feel like I was loosing my mind because who goes from 'I want to throw myself in front of a bus' to 'I'm perfectly fine' just like that? I did some research, I went to the doctor and described my feelings, he looked me in the eye and gently asked what I thought it was, I said I'd read about PMDD and I thought it might be that, he said 'I think so too' and wrote a prescription.

If, before you get your period, you feel furiously angry, suicidal, irritated by every tiny thing to the point you want to murder someone, stuck in a black hole you'll never escape from. If you are experiencing extreme emotions for what seems like no good reason, especially if you get your period and those extreme emotions just go away. You're probably not just PMSing , you may have PMS's feral big sister PMDD and it's treatable.

Also this is something that can develop as you get older. So if you used to get normal PMS but what I wrote above sounds more like your norm now then don't just write it off as regular PMS.

Premenstrual exacerbation is when a chronic illness gets worse in the second half of the menstrual cycle, before or during a period.

PME, as a named phenomenon, is still fairly new. There is a suspicion that a lot of people diagnosed with PMDD--where the symptoms are things that do not appear outside of certain phases of the menstrual cycle--may actually have PME instead (conditions that are always there, but get 'worse' during the cycle)

'A popular fanfic author stopped updating her fic because she said that the stress of being constantly falsely accused of using AI was a witch hunt and it was destroying her mental health to the extent that she needed to take a break from writing, leading to multiple online discussions defending her and debates about AI accusations and how You Can't Really Tell So Leave Her Alone, and then someone realised that there were Claude coding artefacts in her fics and that it was a super pervasive problem in that particular fandom, proven definitively by looking at the source coding of each work on AO3, and she denied it for a bit but then ultimately admitted that oopsie, she had been using genAI all along, and then she deleted all of her fics off AO3 and people got mad because they were being denied access to their favourite fics, even though they now knew definitively that they were genAI slop, and then it turned out that she'd actually stopped updating the fic on AO3 in the first place because she'd been shopping it around to agents and editors as an original work with the serial numbers filed off, and she'd been in conversations with a publisher which ultimately got dropped because she'd lied to them about her AI use' oh cool, so we're in Hell, then
