i just love all the stories about production on project hail mary. they didn't use a single green/blue screen in the whole film. they built the whole interior of the hail mary. the petrova line scene was done practically by putting infrared lights on a chicken wire cage. rocky's voice was one of the puppeteers because he did such a good job during filming that they couldn't imagine anyone else voicing him. and rocky was a practical puppet/animatronic! sandra huller picked sign of the times as her karaoke song and she asked her daughter if it was still a cool song. i just feel like there was so much love making this film and im obsessed
Arthur: So what. You're not going to help my sister, your friend, because some dragon told you that she might turn evil one day, in a far away future?
Merlin: No, he told me that she will kill you, or that she will be responsible of your death. Morgana will betray you. I can't let her do that. I have to protect you
Arthur: *worry evident* A dragon told you that. A dragon⦠And⦠Are you sure you can trust it, this dragon?
Merlin: He's a him, not an it. *not looking at arthur* And⦠who else could I trust?
Arthur: *tears in his eyes. Takes a deep breath, trying but failing to keep his mouth from curling downward* Me? *voice breaks* You could trust me?
Merlin: *Blinks, confused, as he feels warm hands cupping his face*
Arthur: *just out of the Lake and still dripping water, he ignores the sting of the cold as he crouches down in the snow, cupping the face of an unresponsive merlin* Come on. Answer me. Please.
Merlin: A⦠Arthur?
Arthur: *sighs in relief, tries to muster a teasing tone to hide his worry but fails* What are you doing here?
Merlin: I was waiting for you
Arthur: You were waiting for me? Here? In the middle of winter? Sitting in the snow? *almost hysterical*
Merlin: *dazed* ⦠yeah?
Arthur: *understanding that he isnāt going to get more from Merlin right now* Come on, we have to find shelter, youāre going to freeze to death *helps Merlin on his feet, passing an arm under his shoulders*
Merlin: I already have, more than once, I think
Arthur: *pauses, takes a deep breath* Come on, Weāll get you warm
Merlin: *buried in Arthur's arms, not really believing the man is hugging him* Say, Arthur?
Arthur: Yeah?
Merlin: Aren't you. I don't know. Afraid?
Arthur: ⦠of you?
Merlin: Yeah
Arthur: *tightening his arms around merlin* Never
Merlin: *bitter laugh* Why? Because I'm useless?
Arthur: *choses his words carefully* No, it's because you're a good man
Merlin: I- *pauses, blinks, sighs* I'm not a good man, Arthur. I-I've done things
Arthur: *tenses, doesn't dare to interrupt because he knows merlin would clam up if he did*
Merlin: *tries to sound resolute* I had to do it.
Arthur: *with pity or compassion* Really?
Merlin: I had to protect you.
Arthur: It's not your job to protect me, Merlin
Merlin: *suddenly tears himself apart from arthur* But it is! *frantic* You're the Once and Future King! Or you will be! I have to protect you, I was born to protect you!
Arthur: *astonished by Merlin's frenzied, almost fanatic, voice. Whispers in dawning horror* What are you talking about?
What if the curse was brought upon Camelot not because the Unicorn died, but because Merlin was sad about the Unicornās death?
Arthur: *betrayed* You... You're using magic.
Merlin: *too tired for this shit and surprisingly angry*
Arthur: *raises his sword*
Merlin: Oh! Don't you fucking dare! *come closer to Arthur, eyes frighteningly golden*
Arthur: *gets ready to fight, heart broken but anger is already filling his mind*
Merlin: Do. You. Fucking. Know. How. Many. Times. I. Saved. Your. Sorry. Ass??? You don't get to do that on me, to go all rightful on me. *the castle is trembling around them* Do you know how many things I've sacrified for you!
Arthur: Leave. Leave before I kill you. Please.
Merlin: No! You can't just set me aside when you learn the ugly thruth. Yes! I use magic! Yes! Yes! And again: yes! And all I do is protecting you and your kingdom! So for one fucking time in your life Arthur, your going to let go of that damn sword and shut your fucking mouth!
Merlin: Arthur?
Arthur: Yes, love?
Merlin: ā¦
Merlin: ā¦
Arthur:Ā *looks up from his parchment. Merlin is frozen on the other side of the desk, blushing. His fingers are turning white Ā around the book heās holding*Ā Merlin? Are you alright?
Merlin:Ā *inaudible flustered sound*
Arthur: ā¦What?
Merlin: *clears his throat* Call me⦠call me that again?
Arthur:Ā *eyebrows raising*Ā Love?
Merlin:Ā *turning into a puddle. Voice high-pitched*Ā Yes. Oh my god.Ā *hides his face in his hands out of sheer embarrassment*
Arthur:Ā *A wild/smug smile growing on his face (heās blushing too). Leans over the desk, grabs Merlinās hands and pulls them out of his face* May I kiss you?
The Favour - Alternatively - "I'm Drawing Merthur to feel something again"
Modern Will is immortal with Merlin au where theyāre roommates and Merlin convinces Will to start a YouTube channel even tho he hates modern technology cuz he canāt keep a regular job cuz he hates authority even more.
Anyways itās a woodworking channel where every title is something like āmy clumsy roommate broke the table and im not giving ikea my goddamn moneyā or āgarden chairs for pussiesā and he starts off every video like āso youāre back, are ye cunts?ā
He does numbers cuz people think heās a once in a generation talent (an eternity in your craft gotta amount to something) but also heās kinda weird like people notice thereās a dartboard with a badly drawn blonde stick figure in the bg of his videos and theyāre like whoās that? āKing Arthurā why tf does he have beef with a fictional king? āHeās as real as you and I and heās a fucking prick.ā
Like and subscribe also stop calling his roommate cute and asking if heās single in the comments fuck off
I want this so badly this is hilarious

re: the warrior cats name wheels and your tags
i cannot emphasize enough that warrior cats is, functionally, game of thrones for children
with all of the violence, politicking, and poor writing decisions that implies
whatever level of brutality that RP had was probably on par with the actual series
Hmm... The RP wasn't as heavy on the GOT-Style Politicking, and it didn't have much interpersonal violence (the cat colony was a very cooperative group for reasons that will become obvious in a minute) buuuut I think it might have been worse because the RP was a different Genre of Horror: Being A Small Mammal In The Wild. Disease. Predators. Hurricanes and other natural disasters. Urbanization and Pollution. The threat of starvation vs. the risk of the hunt. The balance of how much you were doing for the colony vs. how much it benefited you.
It wasn't a forum-type freeform RP, it was more of a chatgroup-based TTRPG where everyone played multiple characters and there was a lot of interpersonal RP, but there were very much encounters/combats/puzzles that were governed with the rules of a game called Mouseguard, which is very much from the school of early D&D where you'd show up with a binder full of characters you'd rolled up, because you were expecting most of them to die. Some sessions could involve multiple generations of cats.
The Game Master of that RPG was a former Hackmaster player of mine, and when she was busy with grad school, it was convenient for her to have me come in and play an antagonist for her players, instead of making her play ALL the NPCs. Some of the Antagonists I played were:
A female cougar that systematically hunted the colony to drive them to extreme paranoia so they'd fragment and be easier for her to hunt as her pregnancy progressed and she became less mobile/her cubs demanded more from her body. She was based on real-life events where a female cougar destroyed a large and controversial local cat colony over the course of a winter. The party did not defeat her, they had to leave and re-settle outside of her territory.
A Rabid Bat, and the subsequent Rabies Outbreak, with me taking over Player Characters as they succumbed to the disease. I remember a deliciously tragic post by the player who was the medicine cat. They decided their PC was so devastated by the outbreak that they consciously decided to go insane and join the rest of the rabid despite not actually being infected.
A Great-Horned Owl that should have been a fairly moderate encounter for the colony but somehow ended up killing like 80% of the PCs before they finally got it? RIP Horohoro, you were a wonderfully stupid menace to play.
A Team of human Trap-Neuter-Release volunteers, which got really existential and traumatic really fast. We kind of agreed halfway through that this was actually too depressing and moved onto my next, less tragic and Much funnier antagonist:
A Horse With A Phobia Of Cats. Cats had a 20% chance of encountering The Horse if they crossed a specific meadow, which they had to cross All The Time, because the only two sources of water and the fucking moonpool were in the meadow. It presented a severe logistical nightmare with a countdown- the cats had to figure out how to deal with the horse before the next half-moon or risk getting cut off from the starclan, and every day they didn't deal with the horse they had to roll for complications for dehydration. It took them five deaths and 26 days to figure out they could just Open The Gate.
Assisted in playing some natural disasters including a Hurricaine (and resulting flooding) , an 8.0 earthquake (and resulting tsunami), and a wildfire (and resulting famine).
Just A Fucking Alligator, who the players weren't actually supposed to fight, it was just there to prevent them from crossing a river at a convenient place on the map that the DM didn't want them to use, but Getting a 12AM Text from a friend asking me "Hey, wanna be an alligator?" When I was zooted on cold meds was really fun if somewhat disappointing in that I wanted to be magically transformed into The Objectively Best Reptile.
An Escaped Serval, who was actually perfectly friendly towards the PCs but *massively* disrupted the social and political dynamics of the colony because he was just so extremely fuckable. He got murdered in an ides-of-march style uprising by the male cats who felt they had been cucked, which lead to a full-on civil war event.
An Outbreak of Rabbit Papilloma Virus that had mutated to effect cats as well. Don't google that after dark. That arc lead to a shitload of political fuckery and the ascension of the new clanleader: Stageye, who became a very bitter believer in Nominative Determinism.
Since the Players enjoyed the Mountain Lion Psychological Horror so much (and everyone was playing too many characters and wanted a die-off event), I returned as another systemic colony-killer: A pack of similarly magical and hyperintelligent Feral Dogs. The Ash River Cemetery Pack were some of the best antagonists I've every played. I'm trying to find my RP notes but I remember Streetmeat, Third-Rail Racer, Overhead-Underhand, Two-Buck Luck, Darkstar, and Magenta, son of Tangerine (the medicine dogs were all named after different shades of red/purple/orange, AKA colors dogs normally can't see). I should draw them sometime. IIRC, the cats killed at least three of the eight dogs but ended up having to cede a lot of their territory to them and make an alliance with a previous rival colony to survive the winter.
Garfield, Eldritch Entity (Joke session modeled on a Simpson's Halloween Episode)
Like I said, I'm not very familiar with Canon Warrior Cats Lore, but my god is it fun to come in and play A Fucking Problem while everyone applauds you for being Such A Devastating Fucking Problem.
I will never get over the fact that Uther just knew that Arthur was gay.
Whenever he had a relationship with a woman he would instantly question it or think that it was sorcery.
But Merlin who would commit literal crimes constantly and once confessed that he was a sorcerer when Arthur defended him Uther didnāt care.
But yeah Arthur totally wasnāt gay.
Oh yeah, that's absolutely true.
Arthur: I'm in love with Gwen
Uther: what
Arthur: I love her. I don't care she's a servant
Uther: wow, I mean... The servant thing makes sense, but love?
Arthur: I do!
Uther: are you sure
Arthur: I'd give up my throne for her!!!
Uther, who's watched Arthur do practically the very same thing for Merlin and had him in the dungeons for it ...: okay, don't be unreasonable now. My son would never do that for a WOMAN.
A HANDY CHART FOR THOSE OF YOU WONDERING WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THESE. NOTE THAT THESE ARE ALL THE INFORMAL AND YOU IS THE FORMAL SO LIKE YOU WOULD ALWAYS ADDRESS YOUR SUPERIOR/ OLDER PERSON/ SOCIAL BETTER WITH YOU BUT WITH YOUR BUDS YOU CAN USE THESE.Ā
Iām not sure I knew the thy/thine distinction. Thanks for this!
THINE IS ALSO GRAMMATICALLY EQUIVALENT TO YOURS.
āIt is yoursā and āIt is thineā differ only in their level of formality.
I feel like, although I love my toxic yaoi Merthur and my sweet devotional romance Merthur, secret third thing Merthur is my baby. Let Gwen have her husband, and let the Royal couple have their secret third thing. They both love Merlin, possibly more than they love each other, let them have their secret third thing.
do you ever think about if arthur had been the one to watch merlin die
like
tHIS IS JUST BECAUSE MERLIN GOT HIT AND HE LOOKS POSITIVELY DEVASTATED
ARTHUR LOVED MERLIN JUST AS MUCH AS MERLIN LOVED HIM AND IM SO UPSET MY GOD
That gif and tbh that episode was such a gift because it showed us, in much detail, what happens to Arthur when Merlin comes close to dying and goes missing.
We just have to think about when those rocks fall and Arthur looks like his entire life has just crumbled around him⦠and then that scream of Merlinās nameā¦
Anyway then youāve got an Arthur who will order his knights who have just scoured a forest to scour it again. Who will not even let his uncle say that Merlin is dead, that will not accept a new manservant, that will plan to go out on his own to look for Merlin, who admits he canāt accept that Merlin is gone and that he wont rest till heās tried to look for him.
And thatās just after Merlin is missing.
Oh and I could mention so many more instances where Arthur will put everything on hold for Merls. Like in 104 or when he wanted to abandon the quest in 402.
Could you imagine if Merlin died? And Arthur had to watch?
Arthur wouldnāt have handled it well. He would try to be strong at first but he would crack pretty fast and Merlin would know this and would probably want him to go to which Arthur would refuse because if Merlin is going to die, he wonāt be alone.
And fuck, Arthur would at least have tears in his eyes or would actually be crying the entire time. He would then try to be strong again but then, Merlin is dying would hit him and heād be set away again.
I donāt think Arthur would be able to compute once Merlin died. Heād be in steadfast denial for a long while. He wouldnāt be able to take it, I donāt think. He wouldnāt move, he wouldnāt do anything. If his whole world crumbled just when he and Merlin got separated, then his whole life would just be dust blowing in the wind if Merlin had died.
This is absolutely true. Heās emotionally stunted only in the way he has a hard time properly expressing them or getting words out, but he has so many and they are strong. Heād be a āheart on the sleeveā type of person if his father hadnāt thrust so many unfair expectations and lessons on him. Merlin and Arthur are ride or die. Merlin at times is Arthurās sanity and responsible for it because he treats Arthur as a human being, not a prince or Pendragon.
merthur microfic: "kiss it better"
3 times merlin mockingly asked Arthur if he should "kiss it better" and the one time he actually did
1. arthur cuts himself on a piece of parchment
Arthur exclaimed a series of curses, putting his thumb up to his mouth to catch the blood. "I've cut myself," he mumbled around it, sounding like a petulant child.
"Oh no," Merlin clutched his chest theatrically. "Do you want me to kiss it better?"
The memory of Athur's scowl kept Merlin grinning all throughout the afternoon he spent in the stocks.
2. arthur bumps his head on the doorway
"Gods above," Arthur mumbled, muttering a series of curses underneath his breath. "Who builds doorways like this? In Camelot, I never have to duck my head." He rubbed his head where he had bumped it against the frame and shuffled into the dingy room of the inn they were staying at on the way back from Cendred's kingdom.
Merlin, who was already busy fluffing up the pillows to see which one was better aka the one he would keep for himself, chuckled. "Aww poor Arthur, do you want me to kiss it better? We wouldn't want your head to grow even bigger than it already is, would we now?"
Almost involuntarily, Arthur released an astounded chuckle. It never ceased to amaze him how Merlin had completely zero regard for his royal status. "I could put you in the stocks for that," he threatened and Merlin's grin grew even wider, knowing, by now, that this had become nothing but an empty threat, spoken solely for the pleasure of bickering, the foundation of the friendship they had forged over the years.
He sent a pillow flying the king's way. It bumped onto his chest and fell to the floor. "Oh no," Arthur grinned, picking it up and lunging across the room to exact his revenge. "I'm gonna get you." Merlin shrieked and tried to hide behind his arms at the onslaught. After the scuffle, Merlin somehow found himself in posession of both pillows and reluctantly relinquished his claim on the better one. He didn't mention that, of course.
3. arthur stubs his toe on the dresser
"MERLIN," Arthur bellowed.
"Yes, my lord?" Merlin looked up from where he was busy polishing Arthur's armour. Lately, Arthur insisted that Merlin should complete most of his duties in Arthur's rooms, claiming his supervision was necessary and that Merlin couldn't be trusted not to just sneak off to the tavern. Merlin didn't mind. In fact, he enjoyed the company. And a small part of him was determined that Arthur did too, wondering if (hoping) that was the real reason he wanted to keep him close by.
"Did you move the dresser? I stubbed my toe on it." Arthur scowled.
"I cannot say that I did although I would love to claim responsibility for your latest ailment."
"You're at the core of most of my ailments, that's for sure." Arthur said, sitting down on the edge of his bed to examine his foot.
"You know, usually I would ask you if you want me to kiss it better, but..." he gave an exaggerated grimace, gesturing to Arthur's foot.
Arthur was fighting hard to keep the scowl on his face. "You know, Merlin, most people would dream of the honor to kiss at their king's feet."
"Yeah, well I'm not most people."
"That is true," Arthur mused thoughtfully.
"In fact, I am one of the few people who know that your next bath is long overdue and-"
Within milliseconds Arthur had lunged across the room, capturing Merlin in a headlock.
"Let me go," Merlin cried out, laughing all the way through the knuckles brushing over his hair, tousling it in the process.
"Never," Arthur laughed gleefully.
+1 merlin kisses it better
Merlin's childhood home was dimly lit and he was sitting on a makeshift chair next to his old cot. In the low light of the fire, he could see every glistening droplet on Arthur's skin. Arthur was writhing on the bed, falling in and out of consciousness and muttering something unintelligible that sounded a lot like "More linen".
Hunith was outside, getting more water, knowing that Merlin wouldn't leave Arthur's side anytime soon. He held a hand up against his head, feeling the temperature there. It was rising steadily. A tear escaped his eye and rolled down his cheek as he wrung his hands. This couldn't be the end of the once and future king. A simple wound from a bandit's dirty knife. Carefully, Merlin reached out to roll up the hem of Arthur's tunic. "It's okay, it's gonna be okay," he said soothingly as Arthur stirred in his delirium. He lifted the dressing from the stabwound and inhaled sharply. The cut was merely a line, not even wider than a centimeter. And though it showed none of the usual signs of infection apart from slightly reddened skin, Arthur seemed to be on the brink of sepsis.
"I don't know what to do," Merlin admitted into the quiet of the hut, his tears coming more steadily now. If his theory was correct and the tip of the dagger had been poisoned, it didn't look well for Arthur. A remedy would need to be brought from Camelot but which remedy was Gaius supposed to prepare when Merlin didn't even know the nature of the poison. Arthur's breaths grew more ragged by the second. "More linen," he insisted, or something like it.
Merlin would never know what had come over him in that moment but as the tears carved rivers of salt over his cheeks until they merged on his chin, he leant over Arthur's body and pressed his lips to the thin red line on his torso. Arthur's chest moved with his shaky inhales and Merlin closed his eyes, pouring all of his heart into where his lips connected to Arthur's skin, letting his tears pool there. Please let him be okay, he begged, not knowing which goddess to address his prayers to. I can't loose him. He's my-
"Merlin?" A hand found his hair of head, threading fingers through his hair with barely any strength.
"Arthur?" Merlin shot up, clasping the hand to his chest before it could fall down from his head. The white sheen receded from Arthur's eyes, making him seem more lucid by the second.
"Heyyyy," Arthur drawled almost drunkenly. "Why're you crying?" he asked in concern.
"M' not," Merlin laughed, roughly wiping the tears from his face with the back of his hand. Arthur's thumb came up to his cheek then, softly wiping at the betrayal of his words. "Thank you," Arthur mumbled, seemingly ready to nod off into a restful sleep.
"What for?" Merlin asked.
"For kissing it better, of course."
Merlin exhaled shakily, bringing Arthur's hand up to his lips and pressing reverent kisses there. "I only use it for you, Arthur, you have to believe me. I was born with magic. I would never harm you or your kingdom. Please believe-"
"Shhhhh," Arthur said reassuringly, removing his hand from his grasp, not to draw it back but to hold his chin with the little strength he had left. His thumb grazed his cheek. Lovingly. Merlin's breath stocked when Arthur's thumb found his lower lip. "It's okay," Arthur muttered, repeating his earlier words back to him. "It's gonna be okay. Come 'ere."
Merlin had known that everything would change once Arthur knew of his magic. He had just never dared to hope that everything would change for the better. But it did. Slowly, but gradually.
In a year's time, magic would be reinstated in Camelot. An undertaking that took a lot of planning. And it all started right there. Arthur relaxed under Merlin's fingers tracing idle patterns onto the skin of his torso, following the golden line that had knit the wound back together. If only Ygraine could see them now. A son born of magic and one born with it. "She would have loved you," Arthur mumbled sleepily right before he drifted off to sleep. Like I love you, he added in his mind.
