My Valentine Cards
I just heard this woman say âyou procrastinate because you are afraid of rejection. Itâs a defense mechanism, you are trying to protect yourself without even trying.â and I think I just realized what was wrong with me.
Yep, this is a very, very common reason for procrastinating. Â Itâs also why procrastination, even though itâs often associated with laziness, is a fairly common trait in a lot of people with anxiety and perfectionism issues.
This idea - Youâre not lazy, youâre protecting yourself - hit me really hard while reading, of all things, Emily Nagoskiâs Come As You Are, which turns out to be as much about how brains work and how relationships work as how orgasms work.
In an early part of the book she talks about Fight/Flight/Freeze responses to threatsâthe example she uses is being attacked by a lion. You fight, if you think you can defeat the lion; you run away, if you think you can escape the lion; and when you think thereâs nothing you can do, when you feel the lionâs jaws closing on your neck, you freeze, because dying will hurt less that way. You just stop and go numb and wait for it to be over, because that is the last way to protect any scrap of yourself.
Later in the book, she talks about the brain process that motivates you to pursue incentives, describing it as a little monitor that gauges your progress toward a goal versus the effort youâre expending. If it feels like too little progress is being made you get frustrated, get angry, and, eventually, you⌠despair. You stop trying.
You go numb and wait for it to be over, because thatâs the only way left to protect yourself.
So it occurred to me that these are basically the same thingâwhen facing a difficult task, where failure feels like a Threat, you can get frustrated and fight it outâINCREASE DOING THE THING until you get where youâre going. Or you can fleeâtry to solve the problem some other way than straight on, changing your goal, changing your approach, whatever. Fight or flight.
But both of those only apply when you think the problem is solvable, right? If the problem isnât solvable, then you freeze. You despair.Â
And if youâre one of those Smart Kids (Smart Girls, especially) who was praised for being smart so that all tasks in the world came to be divided between Ooh This Is Easy and I DONâT KNOW IF I CAN DO THAT AND IF I FUCK UP I WILL DIE, then⌠itâs pretty easy to see how you lose the frustration/anger stage of working toward a goal, because your brain goes straight to freeze/despair every time. Things are easy and routine or they are straight up impossible.
So, you know, any time you manage to pull yourself up and give that lion a smack on the nose, or go stumbling away from it instead of just falling down like a fainting goat as soon as you spot it on the horizon, give yourself a gold star from me. Because this is some deeply wired survival-brain stuff. Even if logically you know that that term paper is not a lion, it really is like that sometimes.
I honestly believe the whole âadults require less sleepâ thing is honest to god probably a myth created by capitalism
It is.
i honestly believe that sleep deprivation is the biggest ignored/neglected root cause of health dangers that prematurely kill adults
ask me sometime about the role of sleep in the leptin ghrelin cycle and how its interruption destabilizes weight homeostasis
or about the new research showing that heart disease is not caused by fat, like we thought for years, but by inflammation in the circulatory system whose root cause is unknown but one of the prime suspects is, you guessed it, sleep deprivation
but nobody wants to hear that lack of sleep is killing people. employers donât want to hear it. and god knows that having sold their waking hours to capitalism to survive workers donât want to lose the only time they have left to them to live their lives, mostly stolen from sleep
i mean even i donât want to do anything about it and i love sleep, i just love overwatch more
this this this this this
our society places almost zero value on sleep
on enough sleep
on uninterrupted sleep
on regular, predictable, cycling sleep
all the evidence we have suggests sleep is really, really, really important to the processes of the human body, including both mental and physical health, and yet when was the last time you heard somebody suggest that people had a *right* to sufficient, regular sleep?
Reminder thatÂ
- Humans are not meant to sleep for extended periods of uninterrupted sleep.Â
By this I donât mean âhumans shouldnât have 8+ hours of sleep a nightâ; I mean that we are supposed to sleep for four to five hours (ish), then get up and do something relaxing like reading for a half hour to an hour, then get another bout of four to five hours. This is what our bodies were designed for.Â
Sleeping the whole night through was a fad started with the advent of the lightbulb. Sleeping the whole night through is so recent (and artificial) that First Sleep and Second Sleep are mentioned in Dickensâ novels.
- Lack of sleep for even a single night severely compromises your immune system.
If youâre planning on getting little sleep or pulling an all-nighter, make sure to eat lots of fruit and veggies/take vitamins that day. Or even better, get yourself some bee propolis. Itâs a natural remedy used for thousands of years in Latin America and is insanely good for boosting up compromised immune systems (if you get the drop kind, put 3 to 4 drops in a spoonful of honey and mix well with a 2nd spoon to mask the strong taste). It has no side effects and is all but impossible to overdose on.
- According to several government bodies around the world, chronic lack of sleep is literally tied for 1st place as the worst kind of torture (the other is solitary isolation)
- Expecting a teen to get up for 8:30 classes is the equivalent of expecting an adult to be at work at 4 am.
After babies, teens are the age group that needs the most amount of sleep. Puberty is exhausting, and the body needs time to recharge. Ideally, a teen should be getting between 10 to 12 hours of sleep at the bare minimum. Most teens are lucky if they manage to get 8. And thatâs a gigantic problem; not only does lack of sleep affect mood (which is extra significant when your hormones are already riding a rollercoaster to begin with), but also has massive effects on growth, which is kinda what the whole puberty thing is supposed to be about.
- According to research âstarting work before 10 a.m. is tantamount to torture and is making staff sick and stressedâ
- Humans were not designed to have the same sleep cycle across the species. Much the opposite in fact.
Night owls and morning people are an actual thing. Because weâre pack creatures, Nature came up with a clever way for our ancestors to always have someone on the lookout for predators and threats: make people naturally alert at varying times so that thereâs always someone alert to keep watch.Â
Forcing night owls to follow morning peopleâs sleep cycle means night owls live with what researchers have referred to as âpermanent jetlagâ.
It was an emergency.
Have a dumb lazy comic I threw together. Iâm going to paint one next which is going to be a McFreaking nightmare, but Iâm here for the challenge!!!
Just a lifelong obsession, Jim. Iâll get over it.

Dude. I just gotta say this⌠For the brevity of her time in this film, this little girl delivered, like, literally the most convincing performance of any actor in the past ten years. Iâm dead serious. She deserves a fucking award, and a medal, and everyoneâs praise, and sheâs my hero. Â Â Â Â Â Â äž Â Â
Things just transpired in my house hold that are equal parts offensive and hilarious⌠Here goes.
So my roommate, Dale, has a gf who does not live with us, but sheâs here all the time. So Sunday when my gf was her we were on the couch and we kissed (scandalous, I know) and she saw it, and Iâm pretty sure thatâs the first time sheâs seen us be affectionate, thatâs neither here nor there.
So today she tells Dale sheâs âuncomfortableâ here and wants him to move out because she thinks me and my lady are going to hit on her or something, she doesnât like living with lesbians, cause itâs not ânormalâ, so now Iâm pissed. Then, Dale goes, âwell you donât live here, so it shouldnât be a problem, just stop coming overââŚthings escalated and Dale is trying to break up with her, but she wonât leave our houseâŚ.she locked herself in Dales room.
So, Dale barges in my room wearing a bathrobe and goes, âcall every lesbian you know, weâre smoking this bitch out!â Then turns around and whips his robe like a capeâŚ
And thatâs the story of how there are 8 lesbians climbing through the window of Dales roomâŚ
Holy shit.
This is glorious
I like Dale. Heâd break up with a bigoted girlfriend and he wears bathrobes like a cape. Not everyone would wear a bathrobe like a cape.
Some heros wear capes
Dale is an A+ roommate

I literally canât get myself to sit through movies that donât have women. Iâm like where the fuck are the women? Why are there so many men? This is boring as fuck goodbye
Even if itâs historically accurate?
as everyone knows, women were invented in 1990
All the notes of âwomen werenât on old time battlefieldsâ are wrong. There were more prostitutes and merchant women than there were soldiers in most every encampment. They followed the armies, marching alongside them, and notably ran the camps.
Many more women dressed as men to fight.
Long before female nurses were officially considered to be a part of the military, they were already on the battlefield. They merely didnât get written into official reports because they were âinvisible womenâ, ânot supposed to be thereâ. Usually they would be local women running a makeshift care center out of their homes.
Movies involving ancient societies? Guess how many had female fighters?
Spies? Mostly female. Yeah, only the men were caught, usually (because nobody suspected the servant woman), but historians believe most cases had more women spies than men. Most cases meaning across time and continents.
Giving me a movie on samurai? Women were trained as well to avoid being captured and raped, and often fought just as hard as men. One woman notably survived multiple battles, and became a hero alongside her sisters after taking out 7 men before dying in her last fight (usually in sword fighting youâd be lucky to take out 2 enemy soldiers. 7 is fucking insane, but because she was a woman it was shoved under the records how the lord managed to survive).
Women have ALWAYS been on battlefields. Women have an intense history in driving victories and losses alike. They were supply runners, fighters, spies, assassins, prostitutes (look up how prostitutes essentially ran the western world, or even the social status of harem members. They literally fucking ruled), even underground activists.
The only time there werenât many women were with cowboys. Actual western cowboys tended to be both POC and gay. In fact, any time women didnât have a near equal or greater presence, there was a LOT of gay men.
History: either 80% female or 100% gay. And itâs 95% POC.
Note, in most films, tv productions, even commercials, women only comprise 17% of the people in a crowd scene, any more and viewers think âthere are too many womenâ to be realistic - even when in real life, women are just over half the population.
Ok if your introvert friend tells you âyou donât count as peopleâ you know they will ride or die with you for life. Not counting as people is the introvert Platonic friend equivalent of getting married.
This is one of my favorite posts because that catâs fucking name is fucking meatloaf
Let us just appreciate that this personâs dad didnât know when they would be home and so he couldnât plan for them to be able to join the family for dinner, but he knew with no doubts that dear sweet Meatloaf staying in that exact position for hours was an absolute in this scenario. Truly, that cat was named well.
