Layton Aesthetic: Arianna Barde
"You think Layton rubbed off on me..? Eh, you can go on thinking that, but believe me, I’ve been making the best of efforts to forget his ‘A true gentleman never craps before 8pm! Always floss before drinking tea especially when it’s heated past 50 degrees Celsius on a friday in September on the night of a full moon!’ bullshit. Honestly cringe worthy, in my personal opinion."
He sighed, kicking the dirt and averting his gaze down to this feet.
"Though, it-.. Doesn’t matter.. So, hows Misthallery been doing while I was gone? Is Clark still taking everyone’s money to import fancy alcohol or is he finally starting to kick his uh.. habit." Luke knew the chances of her being able to answer was slim. Clark hadn’t really spoken to anyone after moving back, as far as he knew at least. He’d go check himself but what would he find?
"I thought that after everything that had happened, you'd at least be able to understand a joke when you heard one." What a smug smile. Wipe that off your face, Arianna. Luke's supposed to be the little shit here, not you.
Although she supposed she couldn't blame him for not getting the joke. It wasn't as if she was the best at them, or anything. Goodness, no, it was quite the opposite, in reality. But she was always too serious in the past, so every once in a while, she thought she'd try her hand at that sort of thing. Honestly, though, she should probably stick to, you know. Not trying to be funny.
Failed attempt at humour aside, she let out a comptenplative sigh as Luke asked about his father.
"Honestly? I haven't seen him much. Besides Crow and his accomplices, I don't talk to the townspeople all that often." Why did she refer to the rest of the Black Ravens as Crow's accomplices. What the heck, Arianna. What are you doing. Please just stop.
"So I wouldn't know." Haha... Really, even now, she was as isolated as ever. Would she ever learn how to open herself up to more than a few select people?
"Oh, dear. But at least your life isn’t in danger, we can be grateful for that."
[The girl had made amazing progress. Even if she still had some asthma, her condition was practically gone now. If only Evan could be here to see how well his little girl is…]
"At least you and Tony are in good health. Would you like me to visit your house tonight and help make you two a nice dinner? I still have to go to my own home, but I think you’d like to eat something other than Beth’s Shepherd’s pie."
"Really?..." A small gasp escaped Arianna's lips, and she brought a hand up to her mouth in a late attempt to cover the fact up. After everything that had happened, she still found it rather strange when people were kind to her for no particular reason. She'd grown accustomed to Tony and Luke doing that over the years, of course, but for anyone else to offer something so sweet was so strange for her.
"I mean... I would like that, yes. So long as you're sure it's not too much of a hassle, at least..." She wouldn't want to be a burden on the woman. after all!
"… Oh, well thanks."
"It takes a lot of work to get my hair like this, and this dress took time to make."
"… You look rather pretty yourself, by the way."
"M-Make?" Instead of replying to the compliment, seeing as Arianna had no idea how to even begin to accept kind words of any sort unless they were from Luke or her brother, she instead decided to push that to the side, inquiring about the other's dress, instead.
"Did you truly make that dress yourself?" Goodness! That was, well. Impressive, to say the least.
"Haha, you probably could have. I hope you get to meet her one day!"
At that time, Arianna was Luke's only real friend. She taught him not to take life so serious, and it was nice to have someone his age to talk to... "Do you still play your ocarina?"
"As do I! It's always easier to get along with people who have things in common with yourself, after all." And Arianna honestly wasn't the best at getting along with most people. If only she'd lived a less isolated life thus far. Then maybe she'd be able to make friends more easily.
"Oh! And of course!" She held up the instrument that she'd been playing earlier. "Playing it seems like the best way to honour Loosha, after all."
timedexistence
Arianna blinked; once, and then twice. The person she saw in front of her was obviously Luke. It’d been a few years since she’d last seen him, sure, but he was… He was an adult whereas she was still only a child.
Well, she supposed if dinosaurs could, by some miracle, not be extinct; if time travel was possible despite its side effects and if a single man could construct an entire village of robot residents for his future-orphan daughter, then Luke could be in his twenties while Arianna remained at the tender age of fourteen.
"Luke? Is that you?" She was curious as to how it was possible for the boy to be so much older than her already, sure, but it wasn't particularly at the top of her list of things to figure out. She'd accepted that the world was a strange place years ago.
"Yeah, a threat to your refrigerator, that’s for sure."
"Mm.. you have a point, but honestly, things aren’t that different. The only real difference is that we’ve all matured and actually been able to see the mess we’ve all gotten ourselves into. I haven’t seen Layton in almost two years, and believe me, without that oaf around everything has become much clearer….” He didn’t stop talking for a good 4 minutes or so.
Who knows what the hell he was taking about, just kind of rambling on about his newfound lament for Hershel and something along the lines of ‘Seeing the light’ and ‘Using his last time here wisely’. Utter nonsense.
Luke heaved, wiping his nose with his sleeve and regaining his posture after his little rant. “Sorry I.. don’t know what came over me.”
All right, all right, all of that deserved another small laugh. While Arianna had a bit of a hard time making out the entirety of what Luke had been going off about, he'd been right about one thing, at least. Things really weren't that different at all.
"Well, it seems you've updated your lexicon a bit, at the very least." Oaf? Oh my god, that was hilarious. And hadn't he said 'shit' earlier? Hearing him swear was honestly the funniest thing in the world. To see such a cute little dork use such strong language, oh man.
At least she managed to keep herself from laughing too much, though. Phew. And although she was keeping herself from that, that didn't mean she was going to pass up the chance she saw to tease him.
"Honestly, though, what's come over you, Luke? Apologising over rambling on like that? How gentlemanly! Perhaps that old professor of yours rubbed off on you more than you'd like to think." HA.
Yeah, she honestly wasnt. It was mostly him making stuff for her, instead. Usually the other way around. So of course, if he asked something of her, she would find it awkward. Pretty selfish, he though as he grabbed his pillow from his bed, throwing in on the ground and just resting on the cold hard floor. The boy pondered for a moment, practically just making fun of himself in his head. He was hopeless, embarrassing, useless. all this negativity clouding his head- Must of finally been crashing by this point, since hes been like this for a while. You gotta come down at some point.
But finally, he came back to his senses once she asked his order.
Tony was hungry, but also wanted to be alone at the moment. Why couldnt she just ditch him like she usually did.
"….."
No reply came out, his mind feeling blank and slow again, trying to determine what exactly he wanted. The boy was having strange tastes at the time, wanting to eat uneatable things.
"…… Coffee. Gimme Coffee. Lots of sugar."
Wasn’t really a food, but it’ll do. Probably make him jittery though since he had nothing in his stomach.
When there was no immediate reply, Arianna let out another soft sigh, closing her eyes as she waited on him, letting her thoughts drift back to things like...
Is he okay? Clearly not. Would Arianna have been able to prevent any of this had she been there? Possibly. Why hadn't she been there? Just because she was the one with the troubled past, that didn't mean that it was impossible for Tony to have a troubled future. Trouble seemed to run in their family, after all.
If only she'd foreseen this. If only those sigils she'd drawn on her floor had done something. If only those Latin dialects she'd whispered to herself so many times had worked. If only she were a real witch, and if only she hadn't wasted so much time isolating herself as she wished for that.
She was a terrible sister, wasn't she?
And again, Tony's words brought her back to reality. She lifted herself to her feet, not giving her brother a verbal response this time as she made her way to the kitchen.
Decaf, she decided. Two spoons of sugar. He didn't need any more than that. She grabbed him a small biscuit, as well, despite the fact that he hadn't asked for one. He ought to eat something. after all.
Once she made her way back upstairs, she gave his door a single knock.
"Are you going to open the door for me, or should I leave this out here?"
"Explain what, exactly? There’s plenty of things about me people want me to elaborate on…” Those narrowed eyes were all too familiar, things were so often narrow. People were narrow minded, some had narrow views on the world. But in this matter, Clive had narrow chances of things going well.
"But I’ll infer you mean why I look like your childhood friend, Luke Triton. I doubt my guess is wrong…"
"Well, it certainly seems you've got a sharp mind. Just like him, I suppose." Which, of course, only raised more questions. The two were, strangely, very much alike. Except that there was one, very prominent difference between them. And what was that difference, you ask? Well, despite the fact that Luke fancied puzzles, he never acted all cryptic like this. Not towards her, at least. And that fact nearly sent shivers down her spine. She knew in her gut that there was something suspicious going on here, and she wasn't going to back down from that thought.
"Which you should take as a yes, by the way. That's precisely what I'd like to know about."
"I knew you weren't a witch. You are my best friend, and I think I'd know if my best friend was a witch!"
Her laugh made him feel a little less awkward, and he laughed a bit too. "I think you would have liked her. I didn't believe her at first when she said she was a witch, but after a while I sort of began to wonder."
"Thank you, Luke. That... means a lot." And she meant it. Luke and Tony, well. They seemed to be the only two people in the world who were truly on her side back then.
"I'm sure I would have, though!" Another small giggle before she continued on. Goodness, it felt strange to be this happy! "Perhaps we could have bonded over our witchyness." Not a real word. Not even close. Luke's bubbly personality is ruining her. Please do not let Tony see her like this. It would be THE END OF LIFE AS SHE KNEW IT.

"Ah, Arianna! It’s so nice to see you."
"How are you feeling? How is Tony?"
"Oh, Mrs. Triton! I've been well, thank you. Although it seems the Golden Garden couldn't cure my asthma." Oh well. It'd done more than enough for her, she supposed.
"As for Tony..." A small sigh, then; slightly irritated, although the smile never faded from her face. "He's been getting on my nerves a bit, but I suppose that's what little brothers are there for, partly."
"Old witch lore? That sounds exciting! I thought I met a witch once. Oh, I don't mean you though!" He laughed awkwardly and put his hands in between his legs.
Her smile widened a bit more as she let out another soft giggle, bringing a hand up to her mouth in an attempt to cover it up. She didn't want to be rude, after all. Not while Luke was trying so hard to be a gentleman.
"Well, in all fairness, I thought myself to be a witch for some time. Really, though? I almost wish I could have been there to meet them myself!"
"Ah… Froenborg… Yes that place was a sight to behold. But Misthallery has it’s own charm, really." She sighed, "I’ll never forget all the places we visited before I parted ways with Luke and the Professor, but places here are always going to be home for me." She laughed, "In truth I’ve visited places even wilder than the places in my last year with them both. But I’m a sucker for classics, you know."
"Really?" Oh no, now she was getting interested. Genuinely interested. Abort mission, I repeat, abort mission! But it's too late, her thirst for knowledge has trapped her. And was she... smiling a little wider now? Dang it. Well, she supposed she could indulge herself in the woman's tales for... at least a little while, right?
"What... sort of places, if you don't mind my asking? Luke tends to write a lot about his adventures, but he really only ever mentions minor things about the places themselves."
"Well, I knew I would see you again, I just didn't know how soon it would be!"
He smiled at her. "What about Tony? How is he?"
"It's nice to be able to hear that optimism of yours again." A small laugh, then. Goodness, when was the last time she did that? It'd certainly been a while. Her smile faded a bit as Luke asked about Tony, but not to a sudden shift of emotion. While she frowned to herself ever so slightly, it was only because she wanted to think carefully about Luke's question before replying.
"He's been all right. He was really relieved once I stared to feel better. He was a bit worried for me for a while since I've been reading old witch lore and things of the sort, but I think he's used to it by this point."
"…"
"I can’t tell, am I supposed to be insulted or not?"
You've done it now, Arianna. Jeez, why couldn't she be, you know, good at talking to strangers? Or polite like Luke was. Well, she supposed she could use this as a learning experience, couldn't she? She curved her lips in a small smile before attempting to speak again.
"Ah, sorry, I was just thinking out loud, I suppose. I certainly didn't mean it as an insult. Your sense of style is rather charming, if I say so myself."
