Speaking of the Mozart/DaPonte operas: do you know the scene in The Shawshank Redemption where Tim Robbins broadcasts “Che soave zeffiretto” from The Marriage of Figaro to inspire his fellow prisoners, and Morgan Freeman wonders what those two ladies are singing about, and Pure Beauty, and Freedom, and so on?

So… the libretto of that opera was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte, a libertine and a rival of Casanova.[*] The ladies are setting up a date with a lover[**] “under the pines in the grove”. Except that a less literal and more honest translation would be something like “under the bush in the shrubbery”.

Later in the same opera you have the aforementioned lover asking a girl to “give him her hand”, to which she replies, literally, “I’m putting out.” Sung on the notes “si la do”, iirc, which translate to “Yes, I’m putting out.” You can literally spot the Italian speakers in the audience because they’re giggling.
