See, here's the thing about these two answers.

[New Vegas] Loke would have gone with the answer on screenshot one because that is exactly how he was. He was the textbook definition of a helicopter mom. Just overbearing and too much.

[Boston] Loke? The Loke that managed to find Jelani, the Loke that came about after what happened to Jelani, the Loke that had to force himself not to break down and cry when Jelani told him everything that Chris did on that night and prior to it, the Loke that learned about his nephew? Would instantly go for the second screenshot's answer.

[New Vegas] Jelani would instantly go for the answer on screenshot two. That Jelani was sick of how controlling and obsessive his older brother was to the point of almost running away until he and Uthorim had a chat.

[Boston] Jelani? The one that learned just how evil people could truly be? The Jelani that learned first hand just how truly vulnerable kids and teenagers can be even if their parents and/or guardians are mere feet away? The Jelani that ended up pregnant because of a monster three times his age who didn't like to be told no? The Jelani that had to watch his older brother sacrifice himself so that he could survive? Yeah, that Jelani would go for the answer on screenshot one.

Have I ever mentioned how much I freaking adore analyzing these two in this AU? Analyzing their Oracle version is beyond a passion at this point, it's a way of life but the ones in this AU are pure joy!

Lol I may have made Jelani a tad too skinny, he's skinnier than Aleksandr, but I'm not gonna change it.

[Oracle] Jelani is skinny, like, he's just naturally prone to be that way. Even after having two kids he just went back to pre-pregnancy weight and look. Aleksandr actually gained weight, he's super happy and satisfied with the amount he gained after Ayanna and Runar. Not much gain after Krysa but still satisfied. He went from 140ish to 167ish and loooooooves it.

Anyway, in Fallout Jela had a...let's call it a journey lol. This version of him is the skinniest mostly due to his own doing (starving himself on purpose as punishment), chem addiction (Calmex makes the intrusive thoughts, bad memories, and guilt go away for a little), and because genetics said so (thanks a lot, Mom).

You look at him and you'd swear he'd never given birth.

Still, the outfit I had on him made him look so freakishly skinny. I'm just staring at the screen like, "Mx, where are your organs? Mx, that's too much, you're suffocating your organs."

Put a jacket on him and he looks better, too skinny still, but not freakishly.

Look, I woke up grumpy and I'm gonna bitch and moan about shit.

I know making mods is super hard and time consuming, even more so when you bother making a very lengthy, clear, and precise description explaining how to install the fucking thing and some idiot who clearly didn't read the fucking description goes over to you asks you, "Hey, so do I need to install this other mod that is mentioned in the required section that you clearly said was mandatory or it would brick my save?"

I get that!

What I don't get is making a fucking ass mod that is pretty much heavily dependent on something like say...F4SE...to the point where your mod will not work unless F4SE or whatever other equivalent to whatever game is necessary is used, and you somehow just decided to say "fuck it" and not update your mod. Devs will update their games. No game is safe. Just because a game is 10 fucking years old doesn't mean the devs won't suddenly find themselves updating the game outta the blue and then brick all the mods BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED TO CONSIDER WHATEVER MODS WERE MADE FOR SAID GAME.

I hate, hate, HATE how some modding communities divide the community just because a mod author decided to throw a tantrum and not update their mod. Listen, pal, you make a mod and it becomes wildly popular to the point where it is named by the community as a whole to be a staple and people will expect you to update it when the game updates! That's just how it goes! I'm not saying you need to be a slave to the mod and cater to everyone's wants and needs and drop everything as soon as the game updates to update your mod.

BUT AT LEAST FUCKING UPDATE THE BITCH!

Glad to, my good bitch. Here's the problem. You can slide into a mod author's DMs and politely ask them how to go about it so you can do it yourself.

Four things might happen:

You get ghosted. Completely.

You're told in the most condescending way imaginable to "Look it up, there are hundreds of tutorials on the subject." Which is far less helpful than being ghosted!

You get insta blocked.

And the rarest of them all: you actually get a concise, clear, well worded reply with instructions on how to do it and you are welcomed to ask questions regarding your endeavor.

If you don't wanna update your mod at the very least link us to instructions on how to fucking do it ourselves so we can do it and you can live happily with your little mod stuck on version 00000.1 because you just didn't wanna or don't have the time or whatever other shit may happen.

Reaching out to mod authors is a struggle and a half and finding tutorials and instructions is even more of a struggle and suddenly finding yourself wanting to play a game and mod said game is a pain in the ass because the whole community is divided (Oldrim vs Newrim comes to mind) and finding the right mod for your version is a pain in the ass.

Don't even get me started on the whole "Oh, you can find an updated version of my mod on Discord. It's tested, bug free, and ready to go."

if there was a freshwater merfolk what would it look like...

they probably would have had to split off before both merfolk and the leviathans evolved! the group that includes both is defined by an ancestor that began living on the coastlines and became more adapted to saltwater environments, but that is also within a much larger (fictional, spec evo'd) group of temnospondyls which was/is more widespread in this universe that was primarily adapted to freshwater and terrestrial environments. if there was a theoretical freshwater merfolk, it would have to happen somewhere around there, as a group of their relatives converged upon similar adaptions to freshwater environments.

.... which didn't actually happen in-universe for multiple reasons, not least of all being much higher competition in freshwater environments with other, similar tetrapods and vertebrates, the same sort of competition which has defined the existence of said group of temnospondyls throughout their evolution. crocodiles have always been a MAJOR source of competition, as are bony fish! otters, beavers, and aquatic mammals fill a lot more niches in these environments! even other amphibians are also a huge pressure to cope with! reptiles, including large lizards, are also major pressures! there's a lot of competition for freshwater environments, and a lot less space to possibly find a place to establish a foothold! they're all competing for the same resources, all at the same time, and there's just not as much available in comparison to the big wide ocean! their group adapted well to exist in small numbers and subsidize itself off of meager pickings, but that's not a very good angle for becoming a large sapient species if you're stuck with those meager pickings. the ocean's a much larger place, and there's a lot higher diversity there, because it's a lot easier to find a smaller corner that no one else has found yet. sure there's a lot of secondarily aquatic tetrapods that made it big in the sea, but there's a lot of means and various ways to do that, so there's less pressure when an opportunity opens to fill it before someone else does.

even if they did evolve, they would probably look much, much different from merfolk themselves, partly due to being outside of their actual ancestral grouping, and partly due to the different pressures of freshwater. if anything, they'd look a lot closer to those ancestral temnospondyls, which is to say. a fancy salamander. a big, fancy salamander. the gills would be weird, and they would likely still have claws and scales, but still! they'd just look like a weird salamander with claws and scales, and potentially make the salamander/lizard confusion even worse. likely would be very similar to giant salamanders in build.

the other alternative is brackish merfolk, which we used to have! but were since phased out of the project and we decided to focus down the species of merfolk into a much more contained list with much more realistic differences (or, rather, differences that feel much more arbitrary, and difficult to even really tell apart, because this is often how species tends to go in our experience. it's just not a very dramatic thing!). they followed in the trend of standard merfolk of mostly being. brown. dappled or banded sometimes! but mostly brown. sometimes greenish. smaller fins, more gill slits. a more dramatically forked tail with a broader paddle. took more after bull sharks than freshwater fish, exactly, with them mostly living in saltwater but with an increased tolerance for brackish water to freshwater.
