Fandom is not for teenagers. Fandom is for everyone of good heart and enthusiasm for a good (or even bad! No judgement!) story.

being a “professional” writer doesn’t mean your works are inherently better than fanfics. I’ve read so many fics that are more professionally written than some published books.

Required to go hand in hand with this is the best line I have ever read in anything and it was a Pirates of the Caribbean fic when I was thirteen:

"Justice is not always easy, and mercy is not always kind."

That line rearranged my entire brain chemistry. And if you think it's good where it is, you should know the full context: Commodore Norrington goes into a prison that's filthy and neglectful even by Age of Piracy standards and finds a man who claims he can provide critical information, for a price. This man has gangrenous bites from rats and can no longer stand. Norrington agrees, the man informs...and Norrington, having promised to set him free, kills him. Because there is no medical hope for this man. He can die quickly and with almost no pain or he can die slowly and agonizingly over weeks. It is freedom, in a way.

Mercy is not always kind.

And finally: if you're not convinced, I encourage you to go read the opening to The Vampire Lestat and see if it reminds you of anything.
