“But… he’s still Peter,” Wendy whispered, a final, feeble defense of her crumbling wonderland. “He doesn’t mean to be cruel. He just… forgets.” It was the wrong word. Forgets. It was the keystone of Hook’s own eternal curse. The boy’s cheerful, careless forgetting of all consequence, all pain, all history. The word struck a flint against the tinder of Hook’s soul, and the centuries-old blaze of vengeance roared back to life. “He forgets?” Hook’s voice cut through the room, smoothness stripped away, leaving a raw, metallic edge. He uncoiled from his chair, a storm in black velvet and sudden, predatory intent. “He forgets your parents’ faces. He forgets his promises before the dawn finishes breaking. He forgets the very concept of loss, which is the only thing that makes joy precious!” He took a step toward the chair, his shadow engulfing Wendy. “This is not a game of forget-me-not, child. This is a theft of your very soul, and you sit there snivelling over his niceness?” He leaned down, his good hand gripping the arm of Wendy’s chair, his face close to hers. The scent of his clove perfume and old leather was overwhelming, a sensory assault. “He took my hand,” he hissed. “For a jest. Because he forgot that flesh can feel pain. Is that your idea of nice? Shall I show you the mechanics of his kindness?” Terror, pure and primal, contorted Wendy’s features. She shrank back, a small animal cornered. But the word still echoed in his skull. Forgets. Forgets. Forgets. A century of careless cruelty, of wounds inflicted with a laugh, of his own hand—his hand—taken for a jest and never mourned, never remembered, never even acknowledged as a loss. And this child, this foolish, enchanted child, dared to call it niceness?

So. I've always been HELLA worried about drawing Jason Issacs Captain Hook in case I fucked up and made it more generic but.. This turned out alright, I think?

Now seeing this text makes me wonder what kind of stories Hook would fixate and enjoy yapping about. I personally headcanon him to really enjoy things like Shakespeare and Greek Mythology, but I wonder what you think? 🎀

Oh, I 100% agree! I personally headcanon that as a (secret) hopeless romantic, Romeo & Juliet is his favorite but he also just enjoys Shakespeare and “the classics” in general. Also poetry. John Donne is up there among his favorite poets. Greek mythology is interesting to him not only from a literary standpoint but also because of the constellations… He’s an astronomy nerd, too, which helped a great deal in his navigational skills. But he also has heard a bit of Gaelic/Irish mythology from Smee and finds it fascinating too. Mr. Smee’s retellings aren’t as theatrical or intellectual as the Greek stories he studied in school and saw brought to life on stage, but they’re intriguing to him nonetheless (and useful at times on the island where the line between reality and mythology blurs…particularly stories relating to the fae). In another life, Hook might have been a poet or an actor himself. He loves a good audience and post-redemption arc, he has a TON of fun telling stories to Peter and the boys, acting out each part for them…and the Lost Boys are absolutely enthralled. His storytelling skills might even rival Wendy’s! (Barrie doesn’t call him a “raconteur” for nothing!)
