“Uncommitted” did not endorse Trump. Uncommitted was an organized initiative during the Democratic primary in Michigan in 2024 to vote for no candidate (rather than Biden) as a protest against Biden’s support of Israel. That’s it. Some individual Arab and Muslim (not synonymous in either direction, this is basic shit people!) community leaders in the Detroit area - the country's largest Arab-American community - supported and/or endorsed him. The idea that they represented the Uncommitted… I’m hesitant to even call it a “movement”… came from people who see Arabs and Muslims as a hive mind. Like the furious hawk white boy from southern Virginia, who seems to see brown people from the Middle East the way that antisemitic conspiracists like Marjorie Taylor Greene see Jews — as the enemy among us, a secret cabal united as one for some sinister purpose, and that’s why it’s ok for a white boy to be racist against them.

As someone who is from Detroit, the way that islamophobes from elsewhere who didn’t know Dearborn existed until 2024 have created this fanfiction of the “Uncommitted” movement is insane. You don’t even have to agree with the movement at all to find it insane.

For all they are pitted against each other, it is unreal how similar post-9/11 Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism are to antisemitism — like, that’s clear that antisemitism is the blueprint. It trades on the same conspiracism and fear of the hidden corrupting Other (homophobia and transphobia also have some similarities there too, again modeled on antisemitism as the original corrupting un-Christian Other hidden among us).

It is once again concerning that so many people who recognize and cut someone out for one version (as they should) are so willing to turn a blind eye to it in another version.
