“I now reverse the gaze and record their reactions to me while I perform mundane tasks in public spaces. I seek out spaces that are visually interesting and geographically diverse. I try to place myself in compositions that contain feminine icons or advertisements. Otherwise, I position myself and the camera in a pool of people…and wait.
The images capture the gazer in a microsecond moment where they, for unknowable reasons, have a look on their face that questions my presence. Whether they are questioning my position in front of the lens or questioning my body size, the gazer appears to be visually troubled that I am in front of them.”

this is such a fucking important project to me because i am constantly stared at in public in a negative way and turned into some disgusting object for the amusement of others and this is a peaceful way to confront those people
Incredible. I mean, I’m not a “plus sized” guy, but I know I’m not fantastically in shape, and tend to stand out (I like to think it’s cause I dress well, yo), and even though I get stared at/ looked at quite often, the people glancing in these pictures are worse than the people I get.

now, i haven't read the original article but to me this editorial reeks of "Omg! They're angry at white people for racism. DERAIL! DERAIL!"
also, "whiteness" and "white people" are subtly different. "whiteness" speaks to a very specific cultural phenomenon rooted in power structures and dialectics and oh for fuck sake why even explain this.
i give up.

Moral Dilemma #463: What Do You Do With Relics Of Your Appropriative Self?
[kinda TW for emotional, religious insensitivity, cultural appropriation, sexism shtuff]
and i came across something i hadn't seen in a very long time...
when i first moved into my apartment in second year university i was so fucking excited. after living compartmentalized lives in multiple houses through high school and first year i now had MY space. where i could be me full time. not me that Mom likes. not me that Dad and Step Mom who-claims-she-loves-me-but-pretty-much-shows-through-her-actions-she-hates-me like. me. unadulterated. 24/7. my stuff in one place, not separated. boom. done.
so when i decorated i got a little stupid.
my bedroom was black sheets with a quilt i had made in high school. it's giant and horribly awesome. i had posters of old black and white photos (including that horrible sailor kissing a nurse against her will. had no idea at the time.) had gauzy silvery grey fabric draping the four drainners of my room with twinkle lights inside.
the bathroom was simple but i think it couldn't be anything but. you could quite literally pee while brushing your teeth directly over the sink. tiny does not adequately describe.
the kitchen was whatever. homey. happy.
and the living room was my centrepiece. because i was going to entertain and have study groups and blah blah. i had a lovely red futon and a big arse wood table and a bench someone had made for me that i stained dark. and then i got a curtain for my door shipped here from India sold in a horrible store where you can buy pieces of culture for cheap and appear worldly and hip. (again, no concept of this at the time). and i bought a Buddha.
but not just any Buddha.
a sparkly Buddha from Home Sense which mass produces homemaking crap for people all over...Canada? i got a picnic basket there once. it was awesome. but this Buddha...
when i studied Buddhism in high school i was really moved and challenged by the various teachings and tenets and methods. so you know, 1 month of learning Buddhism. i totally deserve a Buddha in my living room, amirite? my thought was the Buddha would remind my self, recently diagnosed with moderate anxiety and mild OCD to breathe, to take time to meditate, to think about my actions and my words and my thoughts towards myself and others. good intentions. still not cool to own a Buddha. a sparkly, mass-produced one at that.
(i should clarify. it's not really sparkly. it's not Disco Buddha...it's bronze and it has some sort of mosaic-y business on the bottom and i believe his sash that are slightly glittery)
so here i am in the crawlspace of this new disjointed place called home and holding this Buddha and i'm wondering...
what do i even do with the Buddha?!?!
to bring it to Value Village feels fucked. so some other whitey goofball like myself can purchase it and think they're enlightened and have it in the living room?
to bring it to some sort of Buddhist organization and have them freak out because my sparkly Buddha is kind of offensive to the concept of Buddha? (not because of his glitteriness per se. in some countries Buddha is simple. in some, very ornate and decorative. so it's not a Calvinist (?) kind of rejection of ornateness but rather the fact that he cost me $34.99 and was probably intended to go in someone's out door pagoda deal in their suburban palais.)
to throw it out and be that asshole who threw out a Buddha?
to keep it and display it and be that asshole who owns a Buddha?
to keep it in a box and be that asshole who has a Buddha in a box?
to keep it and wait til i cross paths with a Buddhist in my life who i think would appreciate sparkly Buddha?
