It’s crazy the things you miss. There was one guy in my squad, we knew he had a bit of a seal leak, not his suit but … upstairs, if you catch my drift. Started to show the signs. Flinching, twitchy, went quiet, the nightmares.

We thought he had it under control, or maybe it’s just so common here that we don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t know, but we went to mess one day, and there he was, standing at the front of the brick line frozen. People just walking around him like he was a statue. He was ours so… he was our responsibility. When we went up to him he just kept saying “they changed em”.

Some well meaning bleedingheart in command had decided us suits needed some more enrichment in our enclosure. Gave us a slightly different recipe food brick, equally as shit. But it sent our guy over the edge. We knew he only had one boot left, but this took his other one.

My other squadmate Darby, she stood next to me and held my gaze, we both knew. Took us a while to get him to leave the front of the line but he went quietly, which was worse.

Next day on sheet patrol, we got halfway through our route when someone elbowed me to halt.

He was just walking away.

“Cold stroll” Darby’s voice bled into my suit coms. “That’s one ration you owe me.”

“Shit” I replied as we watch him go.

I’d bet her he wanted to hear the hiss, go quickly, hearing the sound as he removed his helmet.

We watched for a bit longer before turning away, nobody looked back.
