This Discord Has Ghosts In It

It doesn’t get talked about enough, but This Discord Has Ghosts In It is a rad example of how you can adapt game design to your surroundings.

Basically, This Discord Has Ghosts In It is a digital larp. It’s Phasmophobia played by chat. Your group creates a discord server to function as a haunted house, then you all explore it, building new ‘rooms’ out of channels as you go.

Some players take the roles of ghosts, and are muted but can affect the environment in the haunted house.

Other players take the roles of explorers, and can talk, but the ghosts are all listening.

Discord wasn’t built to be gamified this way, but that doesn’t matter.

As long as you can guarantee consistent behavior from a thing, you can build mechanics off of it.

Anything in your environment can be turned into a game.

And in this particular case, it’s a really good one!

The mechanics lend themselves well to the kinds of pacing, limited communication, and untrustworthy setting that any good ghost story needs.

hi! hope youre doing well. i wanted to ask re: the d&d comic u commissioned if they were alright? you dont have to answer this ask, but like, after the woman w/ the plate came in and broke it, did your d&d character n their partner make it out alright? i dont know them but i want them to be happy 😭😭 sorry 4 being dramatic, im just so invested! haha

Oh wow, that makes me really happy to hear that you are so invested in them! ;u; I guess I should give some context for this! The tiefling is still my current dnd character, and a lot of her backstory is a secret to the rest of the party still. However, lucky for me nobody in the rest of my party use tumblr ;) The purple tiefling is Lerissa, a divination wizard who served under the noble Nahlor family. The brown-haired woman is Keira Nahlor, the noble's daughter. The two loved each other dearly, but once the two's secret relationship was caught, Lerissa was exiled, and was forced to travel to far lands. Good news though, the two did eventually meet back up recently! Bad news, Lerissa had changed a lot in her travels though, being a more bitter and paranoid person, and Lady Keira was forced into an arranged marriage that she hates with one of the royals in the capital, and known leader of a slave trade. When they met, the two embraced but their meeting would only last a few minutes before Keira had to leave, lest her husband became suspicious. And...well, that's the current situation! Lerissa wants to find a way to save Keira, but its not easy to take down a powerful royal leader, and they also have to deal with the Main Plot on top of it all. There's other details related to the plot and Lerissa in general, but this is about it so far in terms of her relationship with Keira. Sorry it's not conclusive, but im working my hardest to make them happy again, dammit x)
