Really ready for this particular urban legend to die
Me preparing to upgrade my corn snake to the next mou.se size: *does research looking at many sources, measures both the snake and the m.ouse, does everything in my power to make sure he’s ready and it’s safe, is absolutely positive he’s big enough for this m.ouse*
Also me, the entire time he’s eating right now: *SICK WITH ANXIETY*
So.... how do I start this? I guess by just going for it.
I have a job offer in Hawaii, and Im taking it.
Therefore, Im putting almost all my snakes up for rehoming since theyre illegal there. Some are going to friends. The rest need to be sold though. Genes, approx. weights and hatch year are listed.
Email [email protected] if interested.

He pooped on me but he’s cute ):
Last night was rather eventful! Snakey laid her eggs and they couldn’t be more beautiful and perfect! She did SUCH a good job with these. Super strong veined and downright pretty to look at. I love my darling girl, she is simply the best. She’s definitely tired after this.
(She was provided a lay box, but decided to lay on the bottom of the cage under the paper instead.)

Sid was stressed out at the vet today so I made him a Little Cave with my hand and he fell asleep
this kinda thing is one of the nicest things you can do for a small lizard in a stressful situation. provide a hide- your hand is perfect. it’s dark, it’s warm, and it smells familiar.
Mango knocked her water bowl over and had to go to jail while I dried her enclosure back out
I am so sick of people saying that we need to “stand together” to prevent legislation that will limit the reptile hobby. That is part of the problem.
I refuse to stand with rack keepers, I refuse to stand with breeders mass producing animals with no thought as to who will buy them and care for them, I refuse to stand with people who excuse and ignore the horrible neglect that is considered normal in the hobby out of some fucked up sense of group solidarity.
I love keeping reptiles. I know there are MANY excellent keepers who truly care for the welfare of their animals, and I believe the hobby can do a lot of good. But I would give it all up in an instant if it meant that the people who see their animals as moneymakers and not living creatures had to give it up as well.
If we want to prevent the hobby from being legislated out of existence, we have to get serious about self policing. We have to make it clear that those people shoving thousands of snakes in sterile tubs with no enrichment do NOT represent us. No excuses. There have always been people striving for better welfare- people who have been in the hobby for several decades and have consistently improved with new information as they watched those around them maintain the same unacceptable conditions.
I am so fucking tired of reptile mills being seen as the face of the hobby. They’re not the face of MY hobby, that’s for sure.
O H HO HO HO
This is my shit.
Right here.
I’m here today to talk about heat pits.
Snake eyes do not “see” heat. They do not have infrared “vision.” What SOME of them DO have are heat pits, which allows them to sense heat wavelengths, sometimes from several meters away. To be clear, NOT all snakes can sense heat, because not all snakes have heat pits, and not all heat pits are created equal. What differentiates a true viper from a pit viper is…. you guessed it, heat pits.
In the image above, the black arrow indicates the snake’s nostril, and the red arrow points to its heat pit (one on each side of its face). Other snakes, like most pythons, have multiple pits along their lips:
Both Green Tree Pythons and emerald tree boas have multiple heat pits along their lips, in different locations:
Their ability to sense heat comes from these pits, and the pit organ associated with them (much like their jacobson’s organ is an accessory olfactory organ for additional “smell” particles), NOT their eyes. Their eyes are not involved in their ability to sense heat; they are light-sensing organs like any other eyes.
Heat pits in pythons and boas evolved separately than the heat pits in vipers, and the difference in evolution has given pit vipers a much “better” (or perhaps, a more accurate) organ; they are able to strike accurately using only their pit organ’s input for guidance, where as most other snakes often rely at least partially on eyesight to aid in striking. What’s interesting is that heat pits are not only used for sensing prey. They also help snakes to find warmer or colder locations for thermoregulation, and can aid the snake in sensing when predators approach.
new headshot, what you think?
