There are so many reasons to avoid slowing down this time of year. There’s so much to do. Places to be. Plans to be made. Presents to be purchased.
And personally, there are so many reasons to avoid getting away with my family. Millie is still so young. Would Bob be safe? I’m still breastfeeding. Benn is busy at work. I rather stay home. Traveling anywhere stresses me out, big time.
And additionally, an outdoorsy, minimal getaway seems really out of reach. I need electricity to plug in my pump. Benn needs refrigeration for his insulin. What would we feed Millie? It’s too cold in Ohio in December. Bob would hate it.
Last week, we pushed all of that aside and had the best time JUST BEING with each other at Getaway’s Cleveland-Pittsburgh Outpost. This dreamy little spot is about an hour and a half from Cleveland, offering a truly unique experience that can be personalized for any family. It was absolutely perfect for us, and something we can’t wait to do again.
In the quiet moments during our 48 hour getaway, I read Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Wherever You Go, There You Are – and I couldn’t have chosen a more appropriate book. This bestseller focuses on cultivating mindfulness in your life, everyday, however that looks for you. Getaway Beaver Creek is the perfect place to try this out. There really isn’t anything to “do” at the Outpost. No swimming pool. No activity center. Not even a check-in desk. There is, however, a fire pit and small kitchen at each cabin, a nature trail, and fresh air. Revel in meeting your basic needs – nourishment and rest – and reconnect however you need.
The flavor and the sheer joy of non-doing are difficult for Americans to grasp because our culture places so much value on doing and on progress. Even our leisure tends to be busy and mindless. The joy of non-doing is that nothing else needs to happen for this moment to be complete.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, Wherever You Go, There You Are
On the way home, Benn commented that he wished he’d read more while we were there. I said, Me too. I’m honestly not sure what I did the whole time. Benn said, You drank coffee. We watched Millie play and Bob sleep. I smiled. Perfect getaway.

Our Getaway Beaver Creek Experience
I had full intentions of keeping this post short and sweet with the text and letting the photos do most of the talking, but I’m a blogger…and I can’t resist the urge to write up a review. Full disclosure: we were hosted at Getaway Beaver Creek so that I could create content, both for myself and Getaway. I was thrilled for this partnership, and after staying two nights in a Getaway cabin, I am even more thrilled to share it with you. Genuinely.
The Outpost was super cool. I scoured every bit of the Getaway website before our trip so that I was prepared and organized, but I was still a little hazy on what the vibe of the place would be like, and I think they do that on purpose. By keeping the specific address confidential until you book and limiting the signage on the street, the Outpost itself has this otherworldly, dreamy feel. Once you’re there, the signage is clear and you’ll have no trouble figuring out where you need to be.
The cabin was phenomenal. We had a four-person cabin with bunked queen beds. Spotlessly clean when we arrived. Fully stocked with everything that was promised on the website (including Swedish for $1/bag). Surprisingly nice bathroom and comfortable beds. Super cute LED lanterns. Mini-fridge that held everything we brought with us (including insulin and breast milk). Conveniently located outlets for charging (and my breast pump!).
Leading up to check-in, I received a few emails and text messages with all the instructions on checking-in (which is simple). Having this text in my messages made it super easy to contact the Getaway team when we woke up on Friday and didn’t have any running water in the sink or bathroom. I sent a quick text explaining the issue, had a response within 60 seconds and a real live person on-site (with jugs of water!) to fix the problem within 15 minutes. An hour later, everything was fixed and we were good to go. Everyone was pleasant, helpful, and extremely efficient. I was so impressed.
We planned out meals and brought a ton of food with us. I prepared 3-bean chili on our first night, Benn made a killer breakfast scramble, and while our pie-iron pizzas didn’t quite go as planned, there is a pizza place within 5 miles and cell service to order (this is a touchy subject with Benn…his heart was set on campfire cooking!). Full transparency – we had full LTE service in our cabin, so if you’re not ready to completely disconnect, you won’t have to. And you’re not far from Lisbon, Rogers, and East Liverpool, so there are places to go and things to do if that’s more your style. May we suggest Rogers Flea Market for killer Amish donuts. You’ll be happy!
Benn kept saying that this would be a great date night getaway for us when Millie gets a little older, and it would be. The whole thing was extremely romantic. I kept thinking that I’d love to go there by myself with nothing but my crystals, coffee, a few books, and maybe my laptop with no Wi-Fi to write if the urge hit. Seriously, it would be the perfect place for a personal meditation retreat or a creative hiatus. Someday…!
