i’m starting a movement to stop calling this shit “artificial intelligence” cause it’s fucking not. it’s not intelligent, and the things it produces are not informed by logical choices. it doesn’t know how to research sources for you. it doesn’t compose art thoughtfully or meaningfully.

I respect the intention here, but I really think trying to push against the moniker "artificial intelligence", entirely, for its perceived meaning is a questionable approach. This may be my bias as someone whose research falls in that wide umbrella, but I think the important thing for people to learn is that "artificial intelligence" covers our many attempts to imbue computers with even fractional aspects of things we recognize within human intellect, not a belief that we've made something "intelligent".

Misunderstandings about this are an extreme problem, but I think "it is called this because it can manipulate language and has some amount of memory" may be useful knowledge to spread. Its important for people to know that we scientists don't call it this because we think its so super smart, but entirely because it belongs to a certain lineage of research and research interests.

You know, I feel like we're ceding too much ground to Silicon Valley and the weirdo by transhumanist types by even agreeing to call all this nonsense "AI". ChatGPT is no more "artificially intelligent," i.e. capable of independent thought, than the AOL Instant Messenger chatbots I used to play with 20 actual years ago. It just has a more complex code.

Which joker decided that we've finally passed the complexity threshold to consider this stuff intelligent? And why did we all just go along with it?

Hi, AI researcher here.

Artificial Intelligence is an umbrella term referring to many different methods that have been attempted or are attempted actively in order to imbue artificial systems with some sense of intelligent behavior and response. More specifically, these methods attempt to take some identified capacity ascribed to human intelligence (e.g. learning, problem solving, logical reasoning, language manipulation, etc) and endow computing systems with one or more of those abilities.

In the original heyday of AI it was all but synonymous with "expert system", which essentially distilled knowledge granted directly to them by the participation of experts in order to distribute that knowledge in the form of problem solving (think: going through diagnostic criteria for identifying an illness) without having the active participation of those experts. In general, many of the capacities mentioned above were sought out through the development of rules for how systems would/could manipulate their inputs.

The idea was not that these things were intelligent, but that they could have some small piece of what makes us intelligent, and that this could be to our benefit. The miscommunication arises from the interaction between that term as jargon, that term as science fiction concept, and that term as an opportunity for capitalists to abuse the technology and people's misunderstandings of it.

It's worth noting that the reason the beaver wants the water to be deeper in the first place is that the Beaver is using the deep water as a pantry:

All summer and fall, beavers gather up branches with the leaves they actually eat, and store it in the deep end of the Pond, where the cold water and limited oxygen keep the leaves fresh all winter, so when it's negative 20 outside, a beaver can take a dip out of it's lodge, grab some refrigerated leaves in the (relatively) warmer water and go back to it's cozy little nap hole while everything else is out there suffering and eating bark or the like.

So it's less "there's a leak in my house" and more "OH SHIT THE FRIDGE!!"

I heard an interview, can’t remember the psychologist, but he was explaining this idea and encouraging people to stop and take a deep breath and literally drink in small moments like you’re a dryass plant when something is ever satisfactory, positive, mildly successful, randomly joyful so your brain can code and integrate that experience because our natural lizard brain will quickly tape over it with mostly unnecessary negative survival shit. Sounds dumb and dorky but sometimes I remember this when I’m feeling good about a moment because our cave brains are still catching up with modern life without sabertooths. I like that it’s not just a pollyanna gosh just be more positive thing but more of a legit brain wiring phenomenon can be gradually hacked through small behavioral changes.

Another super important one: Take the time to tell yourself, when something you did or bought or decided works out “That was a good decision and I’m glad I made it! Go me!” 

Seriously, it can have a huge impact. suddenly you go from remembering nothing but bad decisions to adding in a series of Excellent Choices You Feel Good About, and it makes things so much better.
