Mermaid underpass. London, September 2015.
Today is July 2nd, the day Independence was voted on. It took two days to draft the Declaration, agree on the final draft, and sign it, thus making July 4th the day it was signed and the day we celebrate Independence.
Happy Treason Day everyone, for today is the day we committed to the path of treason against the British Empire.
There’s no doubt the Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. But which date has the legitimate claim on Indepe
"How to get out of a reading slump" advice is normally like, pick up something light and easy, something fun, something similar to stuff you've enjoyed reading in the past.
But when that fails, I cannot recommend enough: going to the library/bookstore, to a section you don't normally read, and reading the blurbs of any and every book that catches your attention for whatever reason, until you find one that leaves you with a burning question that can only be answered by reading the whole book.
Never underestimate the power of Needing to Know The Answer.
Like, I'm an avid epic fantasy reader. I like big series, complicated plotlines with tons of characters and settings. I struggle to get through classics or anything non-fiction, and I never browse the mystery or thriller sections.
And yet, so far the list of books that have broke a reading slump for me include: Jane Eyre, Cymbeline (Shakespeare play), Pretty Little Liars, Piranessi (fantasy, yes, but not my normal variety), a mystery about a 13 year old girl who suspecrs she was kidnapped as a baby, a non-fiction book on the bureaucracy behind the gestapo, and a non-fiction memoir about the residential school that used to be near where I live.
Curiosity is a muscle that needs to be stretched, and it feels good! And brains crave novelty, variety! Just like how we need variety in our diets to get enough nutrients, I think brains need a variety of "nutrients" (experiences) too. I wonder how often my reading slumps are the result of my brain getting "bored" with the usual.
“Your ancestors are amazed at all your spices!”
“Your ancestors are impressed that you are an educated woman!”
“Your ancestors are proud that you are thriving in spite of what society did to them and you”
It’s all very sweet! But! Necromancy! Is! Still! Illegal! Your ancestors are going back in the ground!
Stop resurrecting them to show off!
[clearly experiencing symptoms of mania] oh i get it! im finally normal!
fantasy: the kingdom has been ruled by one family for 10,000 years
science fiction: a new species evolved in 30 years
i must say, i am a huge fan of when a book is in the middle of a very exciting plot containing many interesting problems when out of nowhere for a few pages it's like, "hey by the way, real quick, here's a detailed explanation of the city's water filtration system! i'm telling you this for a reason and you should worry about it. anyway! haha okay back to the plot" and you just get to be Scared for a while
i am kissing you on the mouth right now

Hey, do you guys remember my 18th Century Life Coach, Gary?
He has finally accepted what people have been telling him for years ("Hey, dude, you kinda look like Ben Franklin. You should capitalize on that")
Gary IMMEDIATELY gets out there and takes the most Ben Franklin photo I've ever seen

did a bit of driving through the state of georgia today and wound up driving through a small town that i later discovered was called newborn, which is an odd name but doesn’t technically have anything wrong with it, except for the fact that i nearly gave myself whiplash doing a double-take at a building sign advertising NEWBORN TAXIDERMY

I don't know why some think child-like faith in God means neither asking questions nor seeking to understand. Like, have you ever met a child?
"lock in" is probably one of the most important phrases to enter the public lexicon in the 2020s
