Saw a beautiful blooming peony on campus the other day
Yall I just defended my phd in plant agriculture! I'm finally a plant doctor 💁♀️
good news: any time a venus flytrap plant produces flowers, it looks really stupid ♡
I have no idea how Venus Flytraps are pollinated but I am now imagining this is designed to try to keep pollinators well away from the jaws of death.
That is in fact exactly why they're like this! (Several species of carnivorous plants do the same thing)
Oooh! Bog time! Tumblr loves a bog:
(Image from Minnesota Wildflowers)
Pitcher plants do the same thing and have really cool looking flowers!
The plant version of it's not stupid if it works.
Rebutia minuscula (by flora-file)
Haven't posted in a while but here are some arabidopsis pics and set ups I've been working with! Grad school is chugging on and I'm constantly growing these bad boys
Prepping and planting the Succulent/Cactus area at the School Garden. The kids are in to it.
to be continued…
“This is Chiloschista viridiflava, from Thailand. Flowers are lightly scented of chocolate.”

I just saw another post about this so this is a public service annoucement.
Stop watering your orchid with ice!
Time lapse of 2 Queen Of The Night (Epiphyllum oxypetalum) blooms
If only you could post the scent…

This bench of carnivorous plants at Duthie Park was grown by the junior members of the Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen. These plants grown in acidic conditions and attract, trap and digest animals, mainly insects, for the nutrients they contain. The flowering plant is a Pinguicula species (butterwort) that is an insectivorous perennial producing rosettes of sticky, pale green leaves.

Aroids at the USDA botanic garden facility
Visiting the actual US Botanic Gardens after the USDA facilities! I'm always down for a good botanical garden
Got to visit the USDA facility that provides the specimens for the US Botanic Gardens while I'm in DC/Arlington for my first weed science conference! The plants there were so cool and it was really fun to get to hear from on of the botanists who works there
been thinking about alternation of generations in ferns again and oh my god I see the patterns. i feel like this
the gametophyte makes changes and the sporophyte tests them. if the sporophyte dies, it fails the test and nothing is lost because the odds are that at least one other gametophyte will succeed with another, better combination. if it lives, it amplifies those changes by producing millions of (haploid) spores with the successful genes to grow into gametophytes, who encounter more sexual recombination. the gametophytes are just running tests on a huge scale and the living sporophytes send out the results by making copies of whatever genes passed those tests. prehistoric fern populations must have been insane oh my god. I wonder how quickly they populated the earth with this kind of system, the mass amplification really makes it. yes I know this is just evolution but shhh listen…. i am experiencing
