Opinion | Stop the G.O.P.’s Conservation Demolition Crew

The House Committee on Natural Resources is intent on erasing essential protections for the nation’s natural resources.

Excerpt:

In Graham Greene’s short story “The Destructors,” a gang of arrogant boys demolishes the home of a stranger. They break into the man’s dwelling and, in an act of arbitrary aggression, dismantle it piece by piece. They rip up the floorboards and saw the support beams. They smash the glass and shred the wiring. They strip it to its plumbing and finally pull down its walls.

“My house,” their victim sobs when he discovers the wreckage. “Where’s my house?”

This is a tale for our times. There are destroyers everywhere, from the White House on down. But there is one particular demolition crew that needs your urgent attention, because its work stands apart for both sheer ambition and lasting harm. The demolition crew is called the House Committee on Natural Resources. Led by the powerful Representative Rob Bishop of Utah, a Republican, it is intent on erasing the great edifice that we call American conservation.

For more than a century, the people of the United States have been at work building this country’s conservation system. Like a family of visionary architects laboring over many generations, citizens here have erected a system of ideas and policies meant to ensure our society’s future by protecting it from ecological devastation. This system is built atop a few foundational laws: the Antiquities Act of 1906, the Wilderness Act of 1964, the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973, among others. Destroy this architecture of environmental sanity, and you destroy our conservation heritage.

The destruction is already well underway. Even as I write, Mr. Bishop and the other members of the House Committee on Natural Resources are waging a relentless assault on each and every one of these essential laws. If they succeed, our priceless public lands, water and wildlife will suffer irreversible damage.

Collectively, the Republican members of the committee have taken more than $6 million in campaign contributions from the oil and gas industry over the course of their careers. Mr. Bishop alone has taken $400,000. Its members are also awash in money from the mining, timber and agriculture industries. Many have ties, too, to the political network of the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, among other interests ardently opposed to environmental regulation.

Like the arrogant vandals in Greene’s story, but with pockets full of special interest campaign cash, the destructors of today want to tear down the walls of American conservation. Soon enough we too will be asking: What happened to our land, our country, our home?

AARP, American Medical Association oppose GOP health care bill, citing loss of coverage

Two major interest groups with sway among Capitol Hill lawmakers have come out forcefully against the GOP’s newly released health care plan, saying the bill could lower the quality of health care or even put it out of reach for many low-income Americans.

On Tuesday night, AARP came out against the bill, saying it will increase costs to Americans aged 50 and older by thousands of dollars per year.

And on Wednesday morning, the American Medical Association — the largest association of physicians in the United States — sent a letter to Congress opposing the bill, calling it “critically flawed” and saying it would “have an adverse impact on patients and the health of the nation.” Read more (3/8/18 10:10 AM)

For anyone in Austin, there’s a checkpoint on N. Lamar near Rundberg, and one in Decker Ln. So stay away,. There’s video recordings of them having arrested already a few ppl in front of the HEB on north Lamar. My cousin who lives by Sendero Hills on 969 said they raided some of the taco stands there so please stay away!! Apparently they’re knocking door to door in Manor so we’ll see if they knock in mine.

WHAT you may ask is the National Security Council?

It’s a group formed in 1947 inside the US government to provide counsel to the President because the world is too complex to merely have the State Department provide all of the intel and major points of interest.

WHO is part of it traditionally? Well, consider, if you have a council made specifically to guide you in matters of national defense, domestic security, policy, economics, espionage, technology…etc etc you would have the heads of the major players. Like the Director of National Intelligence and the Director of the Joint Chief’s of Staff who in their turns represent our spies and our military respectively.

HOW has Trump altered this? He has in effect said that the National Security Council doesn’t need authorities from the various departments to help the President understand or provide their personal insight to decisions…instead they will be replaced in the NSC by Steve “Actual Nazi” Bannon and RNC chief Reince “Fucko” Priebus.

BUT WAIT…what about matters of national defense and espionage or counter intelligence? According to Der Fuhrer Bannon and Priebus will do the trick, since they clearly have spent so much time in the military and intelligence communities. If a really tough question comes up the traditional members of the council can be called, but hey, who needs those guys anyway, if they were actually important they’d be there right?

SO WHAT’S THAT MEAN? It means that the President’s foreign and domestic policy is basically guided by a Nazi and the head of the Republican National Convention. I don’t mean that lightly, imagine if you wanted to run a country and needed goals and guidelines for what you would do, you’d ask the heads of your governments various offices and groups to tell you what’s happening to make those decisions right? What the Piss Lord in Chief has done has said 'I don’t want to meet with them because I think the world is too complicated to be described by these types…instead I’ll have a Nazi news pundit, and the guy who directs the Republican party’s campaign finances to tell me how things should go and who I need to look out for.’

HOW’S IT GET WORSE? Oh yeah, this is kinda important, you see we used to have a system in place where the Pentagon, the Joint Chief’s of Staff, and the NSC all had to agree on when to target someone for killing, specifically for when a US citizen needed to be assassinated, those three groups had to agree that it should be done. Well…You see, Susan Rice under Bush, and continued under Obama created the Disposition Matrix, that streamlined the process. The argument was that things could move so rapidly that trying to get so many divisions of the government together to agree on a target was unfeasible, so let the NSC just decide unilaterally, since the Joint Chief’s of Staff are literally always part of it. EXCEPT MY FUCKOS that now the power to selectively assassinate any US citizen has been handed to the President, Steve ‘Sieg Heil’ Bannon, and Reince ‘Dumbass Name’ Priebus…and the Joint Chief’s are out of the picture. 

Guess who just put a gun to the head of every American domestic and abroad? The President. 

Anyone wanna guess how long before he decides that any dissent is considered an act of terrorism? Probably not long.

When exactly do we use the Disposition Matrix? When the President and the NSC want an American citizen dead for any reason? 

So you maybe see where this can go? Right? I don’t need to go any further in explaining to you how fucked up it is that the NSC is now populated by the President and a Nazi as two thirds of its major decision making components.

No middle class, no republic: GOP plans to destroy America’s safety net will…

As Jefferson noted in a 1785 letter to Madison, “Another means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions of property in geometrical progression as they rise.”

Similarly, Thomas Paine, proposing in “Agrarian Justice” (1797) what we today call Social Security, said that a democracy can only survive when its people, “[S]ee before them the certainty of escaping the miseries that under other governments accompany old age.” Such a strong social safety net, Paine argued, “will have an advocate and an ally in the heart of all nations.”

Tragically, Republicans are today planning to destroy both our nation’s progressive taxation system and our social safety net, in obsequious service to their billionaire paymasters.

1. All election cycle, Donald Trump has been our problem. Now, we’re HIS PROBLEM, and since Congress serves us, SO ARE THEY. Let’s use the best tool at our disposal (our elected representation) to show Donald once and for all that, in our America, LOVE TRUMPS HATE.

2. Begin with the WEEKLY-CALL-TO ACTION. This is the #1 priority for calls.
