Why worship a deity whom you cannot see, when there is the Moon in all her splendour visible? Worship her. Invoke Diana, the goddess of the Moon, and she will grant your prayers
The House of the Wind: Aradia; Gospel of the Witches (via visardistofelphame)
Wicca is a religion yes. Witchcraft is separate from Wicca, so being a witch does not make someone wiccan but most times wiccans tend to be witches if that makes sense. Wicca was formed sometime after 1921 and didn't really come into popularity until the 60s and 70s. I'd recommend reading the wikipedia article on it to get a start on some of the history.
Thank you anon! I know the history, I researched Gerald Gardner extensively when I first found Wicca (although I don’t follow Gardnerian traditions now) it was just so many posts on here that seemed to use Wicca and witchcraft like they’re interchangeable that confused the hell out of me!
Just poking in to add in a few things~
Wicca and its various traditions (though not all?) are practices of witchcraft; however, witchcraft extends to a number of non-Wiccan traditions. A small list would include: Cultus Sabbati, Clan of Tubal Cain, the 1734 Tradition, Huntwitch, Wildwood, Faery, etc etc.
Wicca, like a number of these traditions, pulls from a few major classical texts that influenced the development modern witchcraft: Aradia and Key of Solomon for example.
Some Wiccans call their craft Wicca or Witchcraft and use the terms interchangeably, which certainly is no issue at all. The biggest confusion comes from when folks forget other traditions exist outside of Wicca. I do believe Gardner had mentioned his tradition being one of many (I believe in either Witchcraft today or Meaning of Witchcraft?), though I would have to look through his books again.
But any-who, Witchcraft is not inherently religious itself, but contains a number of religious and non-religious traditions within it,
Yes! All of this!
A lot of the witchcraft traditions have some connection to either the Aradia tradition, or George Pickingill. (Who founded the BricketWood coven that Gardner joined before he went on to create Wicca) All Traditional Wiccans practice witchcraft- I can’t speak for the Neo-Wiccan community though.
A calm and serene meditation to start the year, an opportunity to do some mental spring cleaning. A time for renewal and new life, new inspirations for projects long left in the dust… As something new for this video- if you turn on closed captions, you can follow along with a guided exercise to accompany this meditation to help you shake off the winter blues and welcome in the new year! A key to help you get the motivation you need to fuel you inspiration for the year! Many Pagans use this festival to welcome in the spring and the start of new life. Some choose to honour Brigid on this day so she will bless the household, and prepare a bed for her if she so chooses to stay the night. “By the time we get to the new year, we are often filled with idea of what we want our new year to be like. We look at others new year’s resolutions and copy them in a vague attempt at trying to better ourselves. But often if we do not assess ourselves, and instead turn to others about how to fix ourselves we come back with jarring and conflicting information. So this time of year is good for mental spring cleaning- getting back to your roots, going back to the core of your being- that initial seed from which you grow and flourish. We’re going to do an exercise here to help you do that~”
Shadow Work is so important in my witchcraft!
It’s a good time of year to refresh, reset and refocus!
When someone adds you to a group and it’s called “Art of Love, Positive Thoughts, Healing and Spirituality”
Not necessarily a bad thing... but you know some people there are going to be SO not down to earth about it.
Avenge.
It is this power which witches have. This power which affords us all things at the cost of all things. Power sparked by equal parts bliss and reprisal. And bliss is well and good, but reprisal is a sweet taskmaster. And when finally you’ve ascended the Mount, flown up to the top with every power not intended, sit upon the back of every enemy and every oppressor. Claim back the throne and crown wrested from you and those whom you love. For no weapon shall be found that can match the keys to Heaven and Hell found in the hands of a witch.
Rise up and resist
A man told me that I was created by God to serve mankind, so I became a witch and devoured his heart.
And when devils rise from hell to take me, they shall never hold me. My touch is like hot iron and none shall ever have me: for I am the Queen of Heaven.
Nazi witches (and nazis in general) are NOT welcome on this blog, take your bullshit elsewhere. Jewish witches (and non-witches as well) are ALWAYS welcome and always safe on this blog.
Witches that ascribe to nazi beliefs or white supremacy have no place here. GTFO
New Rule: Even if you follow the three-fold law or the wiccan rede, it is always okay to curse nazi witches (and nazis in general). In fact, it is still totally following the wiccan rede (if you ascribe to it) because you’re preventing them from harming other folks.
And lets be real here, if you ascribe to the three-fold law and curse a nazi, only good energy will come back to you because ultimately you’re doing good by preventing them from harming others.
If anything, you can always site the time that Gardner and a bunch of other witches joined in an effort against Hitler.
Gardner straight up bound and cursed Hitler and his troops. Never forget that.
A lot of witchcraft is tied into the Aradia text that tells you to fight your oppressors. The Wiccan Charges are based off a text that tells you to work your magick against those that would take away your rights, to poison your overlords and destory their crops.
HNNNNNNNNNN…I really want some inking pens
I have a gorgeous multi-nib calligraphy set- that’s often the cheapest way to get them! (So handily portable too!)
Do not send me a message, an ask, or anything else asking me for help with bullshit like time travel. Apparently someone is going around tumblr witch community asking the same question to anyone with the word witch in their title. Gurl bye.
You mean you can’t do time-travel? :o *Over- exaggerated gasp*
I suppose you can’t make the sun explode by blinking either? ;p
I’ve had a huge influx of people asking for spells too. *sigh*
I just thought about the whole “you always need to ground and center before any magic” axiom and why it’s never worked out for me, even though at times I’ve believed it. The truth is, a lot of my magic is just not energy-based, and grounding and centering is a technique rooted in energy work.
If I’m doing magic based on entity work, grounding and centering either makes no difference or makes it harder to connect to an entity who I need to be somewhat entwined with consciousness-wise to work with.
If I’m anchoring my magic on the principle of a logo having a lot of power behind it, I’m not directing energy work for it, I’m plugging the logo into my magical equation and just backing away.
If I’m fueling magical work with emotions, excitement-fueled magic will not be helped by grounding and centering.
If I’m doing magic by utilizing music, then the music is my world and I’m not grounded and centered on anything, I’m IN the music.
If I’m using a charm, it’s basically a push-button operation and grounding and centering is a big production I don’t even need.
If it’s art magic or sigil work, grounding and centering doesn’t factor in. Vocal-based work? Not grounding or centering.
Mind you, there might be a part where I clear my head or put myself in a magical mindset, but this doesn’t have anything to do with grounding my energy to prevent a backlash or overload, and doesn’t have to do with shifting my energy so that it’s all organized and available from my center. I don’t work with energy like that and I don’t focus on energy work to drive most of my magic. Grounding and centering as is classically described isn’t necessary for many magical operations and really applies mostly to energy work models.
I get this a lot. Doing stuff that involves dream work or spirit flight it just doesn’t work. I find the centering more helpful in the aspect of “getting in the zone” sort of thing. Which then, I enjoy doing that with either trance work or dancing hehe. Grounding works more along the line when I want to be done doing my magic vs doing it to prepare for stuff
All of the above! I want my energy to stay happily floating round me (Or in violent, choatic whiplashes as it often feels- although oddly not in a bad way) until I can direct it to do what I want. No use in sinking it into the ground if I’m just having to raise it all back up again. (Unless I’m doing Shadow/Earth work, to which- very useful!)
#WeAreAradia
I thought I should let you all know about the #WeAreAradia hashtag floating around social media.
Fight against oppression, fight against your oppressors, work your magick until those that need to be protected are. Fight for your equality, fight for you rights!
I know I’m going to be evoking Aradia Tonight!
Calling all Luciferians!
Where you at? I’d like to speak with you guys about your practice, I’m extremely interest. Thanks!
Right here! :D
Adoration of the Great Teacher
My Incubus said to me…
Kneeling before the Stang, the True Altar and very Idol of the Witch-God, is the same Mystery of the Inversion of the Tree/Compass - “Crown to roots, roots to crown, down is up and up is down.”
It is more than the willingness to be taught, to gain knowledge. It is the diligent commitment to the Teacher, who in the end is one’s very own Daimon-Self. This is being a seeker of wisdom. Remember that the Cunning Fire is a lamp, and we are pilgrims in the great dark of the cosmos, and in the fog of human confusion.
Our journey is to Truth and Wholeness, to Mastery. The Master and the Mastery are one. To kneel before this, is to be as it; to be it. “Crown to root, root to crown.” There is only one point on the Compass. The Tree is ever a Seed, and ever unfolded. Center-Circumference.
Even the Master kneels before Our Lady, subdued by Her Love. The Hand that tames the Beast of Many Eyes; the Pure Bright Spirit hot with Pride. Be subdued in love when you kneel. This is the key to the Mystery. Adoration, not subjugation.
This is astoundingly beautiful!!
I think I found all the info I need of Diana's three forms.... (Copied from Theoi.com) TRIAD OF HECATE, ARTEMIS & SELENE The Hekate-Artemis-Selene (Hecate-Diana-Luna) triad was popular in Roman-era poetry. Seneca, Medea 6 ff (trans. Miller) (Roman tragedy C1st A.D.) : "[Medea cries out to Hekate :] ‘Thou [Hekate-Selene] who doest show thy bright face as witness of the silent mysteries, O three-formed (triformis) Hecate.’" Seneca, Medea 750 ff : "[The witch Medea casts a spell :] ‘Now, summoned by my sacred rites, do thou [Hekate], orb of the night [i.e. the moon], put on thy most evil face and come, threatening in all thy forms.’" Seneca, Medea 770 ff : "The hour is at hand, O Phoebe [Hekate-Selene], for thy sacred rites." Seneca, Medea 787 ff : "[The witch Medea calls upon the power of Hekate :] ‘I see Trivia's [Hekate-Selene-Artemis] swift gliding car, not as when, radiant, with full face [i.e. the moon], she drives the livelong night, but as when, ghastly, with mournful aspect, harried by Thessalian threats, she skirts with nearer rein the edge of heaven. So do thou wanly shed form thy torch a gloomy light through air; terrify the peoples with new dread, and let precious Corinthian bronzes resound, Dictynna [Artemis-Selene], to thy aid. To thee on the altar's bloody turf we perform thy solemn rites.’" [See Hecate Goddess of Witchcraft for the rest of this passage.] Seneca, Phaedra 406 ff : "[Phaedra prays to Artemis-Hekate-Selene :] ‘O [Diana-Artemis] queen of the groves (regina nemorum), thou who in solitude lovest thy mountain-haunts, and who upon the solitary mountains art alone held holy, change for the better these dark, ill-omened threats. O great goddess of the woods and groves, bright orb of heaven, glory of the night, by whose changing beams the universe shines clear, O three-formed Hecate, lo, thou art at hand, favouring our undertaking. Conquer the unbending soul of stern Hippolytus; may he, compliant, give ear unto our prayer. Soften his fierce heart; may he learn to love, may he feel answering flames. Ensnare his mind; grim, hostile, fierce, may he turn him back unto the fealty of love. To this end direct thy powers; so mayst thou wear a shining face [Luna-Selene the moon] and, the clouds all scattered, fare on with undimmed horns; so, when thou drivest thy car through the nightly skies, may no witcheries of Thessaly prevail to drag thee down and may no shepherd [i.e. Endymion] make boast o'er thee. Be near, goddess, in answer to our call; hear now our prayers.’" Seneca, Troades 386 ff : "With such swift course as the lord [Sol-Helios the sun] of stars hurries on the centuries, and in such wise as Hecate [Selene the Moon] hastens along her slanting ways." Statius, Thebaid 10. 365 ff (trans. Mozley) (Roman epic C1st A.D.) : "[Statius describes Diana-Artemis as a triple goddess incorporating Artemis-Hekate-Selene :] Cynthia, queen of the mysteries of the night, if as they say thou dost vary in threefold wise the aspect of thy godhead, and in different shape comest down into the woodland . . . The goddess stooped her horns and made bright her kindly star, and illumined the battle-field with near-approaching chariot." Statius, Thebaid 4. 410 ff : "[The seer Teiresias performs necromancy in the grove of Artemis-Hekate :] There stands a wood, enduring of time, and strong and erect in age, with foliage aye unshorn nor pierced by any suns . . . Beneath is sheltered quiet, and a vague shuddering awe guards the silence, and the phantom of the banished light gleams pale and ominous. Nor do the shadows lack a divine power: Latonia's [Artemis-Hekate's] haunting presence is added to the grove; her effigies wrought in pine or cedar and wood or very tree are hidden in the hallowed gloom of the forest. Her arrows whistle unseen through the wood, her hounds bay nightly [i.e. as Hekate], when she flies from her uncle's [Haides] threshold and resumes afresh Diana's [Artemis'] kindlier shape. Or when she is weary from her ranging on the hills, and the sun high in heaven invites sweet slumber, here doth she rest with head flung back carelessly on her quiver, while all her spears stand fixed in the earth around . . . [Teiresias summons ghosts :] ‘Haste ye all together, nor let there be fore the Shades but one fashion of return to the light; do thou, daughter of Perses [Artemis-Hekate], and the cloud-wrapt Arcadian [Hermes] with rod of power lead in separate throng the pious denizens of Elysium.’" Apuleius, The Golden Ass 11. 5 ff (trans. Walsh) (Roman novel C2nd A.D.) : "To the trilingual Sicilians I [Artemis] am Ortygian Proserpina [Hekate]." Nonnus, Dionysiaca 44. 198 ff (trans. Rouse) (Greek epic C5th A.D.) : "[Nonnus describes Artemis-Hekate-Selene as a triple goddess :] O daughter of Helios (the Sun), Mene (Moon) of many turnings, nurse of all! O Selene (the Moon), driver of the silver car! If thou art Hekate of many names, if in the night thou doest shake thy mystic torch in brandcarrying hand, come nightwanderer . . . If thou art staghunter Artemis, if on the hills thou dost eagerly hunt with fawnkilling Dionysos, be thy brother's helper now!."
Valerius Flaccus, Argonautica 5. 238 ff (trans. Mozley) (Roman epic C1st A.D.) : "Medea who now is consectrated to Diana of the Underworld [i.e. Hekate] and leads the holy dance."
