ADULTING feat. photos of my favorite grocery store lol =))
We, of different generations, upbringings, principles, countries and culture, have varied (but all sensible) interpretation of the term ADULTING.
While some find the term cool and funny, I do not. Adulting, for me, means serious talk and serious decisions. Sitting down and taking a look at my priorities from in and outside the table. Making choices based on my knowledge of how my decisions are going to affect not only me but the people around me. Being selfish in many aspects so I can be selfless to the ones that matter to me: myself, my relationship, my family. Adulting is my life now, whether I like it or not. But the best part is? I like it. :)
Adulting is not paying my bills and rent. For me, it’s paying mine and my parents’ bills. While I know that it’s not a strict requirement to give back to parents, I’ve taken it upon myself to give back because after all, they’re the people who actually gave me life. It may not be a big deal to some, but to me it is. I can go on and on writing a million paragraphs about my relationship to Papa and Mama and I’ll never finish. So even with the fact that nothing I give them can ever be enough for everything they’ve given me, I still do my best to give back. Hence my decision to stay with them and remain a contributing part of their household while I’m a bachelorette. (forgive me for the lack of better term hahahaha) Pay bills, contribute to household expenses, assist with my brother’s school expenses, treat family day every once in a while and in turn, I get to have my own rent-free comfortable and happy place in our family home. I don’t cover all and mine is merely a contribution, but my parents have constantly expressed pride and appreciation for how much / how little I can give. For me, THIS is a more practical choice than moving out to my own place paying for everything else (house, electricity, phone, internet, water, groceries, maintenance, etc.) who will benefit ONLY ONE PERSON - ME. This way I get to enjoy being with my family, in the home I grew up in, pay the same bills anyway but see that it benefits not only me but also my family - all while building up my savings and future plans.
Adulting is not buying the things I need. It’s wanting the things I need resulting to buying the things I want. LOL It’s clever and I must be fortunate because I ended up like this. I want the things that I need more than anything else which makes buying important/urgent things over useless luxury/decorative/trendy/hype things an easy choice for me. I enjoy grocery shopping now more than clothes shopping. Yes, I still do make up shopping and make up is never really a necessity but STILL NOT IN EXCESS. I buy the make up that will last me what 4 to 6 months I’m good. I enjoy paying for electricity and internet because I know how much I enjoy it at home.
Adulting is dating. Not being in a rush to marry and live in the same house and have kids and… yes, it’s the life (and priority) of many but it’s not mine. My boyfriend and I are adults and we’re dating - as much as we can and as happy as we can. We’re bestfriends, we’re family and our families are each other’s families. Families that we are happy to provide for and are not in a rush to separate from. But it doesn’t make us love each other less. If anything, our dates are never boring, everyday feels like our anniversary, we laugh at soooooooo many jokes and we always, always have a good time. With each other and with each other’s families. For me, adulting isn’t the state of getting pregnant or walking down the altar. Adulting is making big plans (SKY IS THE LIMIT!) with the love of my life and living and enjoying and making sure that the plans are practical not only to both of us who we love to the ends but also to both our families who we care so much about. Marriage or no marriage, kids or no kids, Adulting is about being responsible.
Adulting is not boring. Contrary to the famous belief that adults’ lives are nothing but a dull boring silence, SORRY NOT SORRY - it’s actually not. Adults actually lead a more exciting life - with our freedom (that is a hell lot different than young people’s freedom), with our money (not all, but older people typically earn more), and with our maturity (haha again, not all, but older people have experiences that we’ve already learned from so..) Adulting is fun. It still probably depends on what activities and people an adult surrounds himself with but for me, so far, it’s fun.
I wish I said everything right and noone was offended because again, the words above are merely my words. Everyone are still entitled to their own definition of Adulting. But if you happen to relate to how I defined it, then great! It’s nice that somebody sees it the same way I do! At the end, I’m just thankful that I even reached adulthood, I initially thought I was going to die in my twenties with all the adventure I’ve gotten into. JK!
