So... who was going to tell me that Tolkien's inspiration for the Ring granting invisibility was probably plays and legend of XVIth century derived from Plato ?

Why did I found out by myself doing some completely unrelated researches ?

Sources : "Several playwrights refer to the famous ring of Gygès. Described by Plato in the second book of the Republic, the ring became legendary in the 16th century. On stage, allusions to this legend run throughout the whole period, in Greene's Selimus, Marston's The Fawn, Fletcher's The Fair Maid of the Inn [...]. About Hamlet :

I read about the whole debate about what is the nature of the ghost in Hamlet. Is it really Hamlet's father's ghost ? Is it a devil ? And more importantly why Hamlet, who believes it to be his father's spirit, speaks to it with this lack of respect in the cellerage scene ? ("Ah, ha, boy, say'st thou so ? Art thou there, truepenny ?" ; "Well said, old mole." etc... Act I scene 5)

Well, apparently, one of the theories is that Hamlet cannot help but make a pun when he sees one ! He heard "swear" and immediately thought "He's asking for an oath but I'll go with an insult! One can play too." And if that's not unhinged emo behaviour I don't know what that is.

Bad summary of Shakespeare's Antonius and Cleopatra.

Beware, spoilers ahead ! (Can Shakespeare still be spoilt ?)

Antonius and Cleopatra are in love, not married.

Antonius marries Caesar's sister to show their alliance.

Plot twist, he lied and went back to Cleopatra and started a war against Caesar.

Plot twist, Cleopatra tried to create an alliance with Caesar.

Antonius finds out and yell at Cleopatra that she's a witch and basically just die already.

Cleopatra pretends to commit suicide.

Antonius is devastated and ask his friend to kill him.

Plot twist, his friend commits suicide.

Antonius tries to commit suicide.

Plot twist, he failed (not really, he is gravely hurt).

Plot twist, he learns that Cleopatra is still alive.

They talk together, finally Antonius dies.

Cleopatra falls on the ground. Oh dear, is she dead ?

Plot twist, she just fainted.

This was just Act IV.
