Normally she would have sparked a retort immediately, no stranger to the teases her diet would get, but she made a quiet contrary sound instead as she folded her arms on the countertop and watched his smooth movements. “It wasn’t on purpose. I was walking towards the river and realized I was passing through here.” She chewed on her bottom lip, finally letting a hand brush across her face as her shoulders sagged, hating the feeling of how small it made her. “I said some fucking shitty things to Rae I don’t think I can ever take back and I’m not– I haven’t…” been okay, but she couldn’t admit it. Saying it out loud would bring some finality she was desperately trying to shut out, to the point of shutting out her best friend. There was a small sense of frustration in her features, a weariness in holding herself together for so long as she found his gaze. “Can we go for a drive? Play some music?” 

"You were walking towards the river -- at this hour?" the words repeated back towards her as his eyes fell to the clock on the wall. He didn't need to tell her the time, but something about the information didn't sit well with him. Her being alone, the time of night, the destination, each detail bringing about a protective feeling. Maybe he was overthinking it, but the way her expression shifted only made him more concerned, watching as the amusement left her features as she opened up about what was going on. He'd never met Rae, but from his own exchanges and Peyton's recollection, he understood why people were drawn to her, how she'd made them feel, making him wonder what could've happened that had changed their relationship. That had caused Peyton to 'say shitty things'. "Yeah -- yeah. I -- ten minutes," he promised, needing the time to finish up around the bar. "While you're waiting, I've got another song to add to the playlist. The new Halsey shit," he mused, heading to the back of room to finish up. It would take him twelve minutes before he was pulling his jacket on, fifteen when her door was closed behind her. Another thirty seconds as he tugged on his seat belt, driving in the direction of the river. "First song, ladies choice," he joked, handing her the aux, digits falling to her knee after.

We’re not on a date.” Vera greeted as she slid in the opposite side of the diner booth. “Just thought it’d be a waste because you know, apparently the lady at the store went through all the effort of making this.”

"Think this would've been our second date, but who's counting?" Though he had to admit that he was surprised she wore it out, his attention briefly falling to the flowers before glancing back towards the menu. He had half expected she'd toss it, not appreciating the joke, so this was new, different. Maybe a step in the right direction. "I'll let Nai know you think she's ancient; think she's about my age? Maybe younger. Does good work though. Her flower shop's cute." He barely skimmed the pages before placing the menu back down in the middle of their booth.
