Art School confidential. This is a painting from my 2nd year of art school, circa 1997/8. I painted this shortly after I discovered vector based artwork (and incidentally adobe illustrator is how I met my wife.) Well after 12 years and over 25 games, I finally got some work into an "Art of" book. The art of Recore to be exact. I have wanted this my entire career, but being that most of my work is comprised of sketches, it rarely makes the cut in books dedicated mostly to highly render paintings and 3D. I understand that I am a bit of an odd duck, that loving simple drawings that capture an idea without a lot of bells and whistles is, at the very least, an unpopular way to be. But I have always found a certain kind of elegance and beauty in simple drawings, even if it's not the flashiest part of the industry. I have told many, many stories with nothing more than a few lines and some spots of grey. It's nice to know that a few of them finally found their way into a book that holds them in the same regard I do. After an amazing weekend on the island and a rather grueling ferry ride home, it feels great to draw another batch of random people. I literally googled "random people." I prefer drawing people on the fly, in a coffee shop or wherever, but I am finding it a little weird. I don't like feeling like I am disrespecting anyone and I sometimes I get the impression people wouldn't like to see my rendition of them, or to be drawn in the first place. Inktober day 18: Escape I don't know about anyone else, but keeping up with Inktober is kicking my @ss. But I guess that's the point, finished not perfect is kind of forced upon you when you are strapped for time. It's a jagged little pill to publish artwork that is not where you want it to be, but "the absence of limitations is the enemy of all art." Inktober day 10: JUMP This one got a little crazy and I had to add some sparks in post. Mega man has one of the most memorable jumps in all of side scrolling video games. Born of 8 bit technology and all the creative restrictions that brings, Mega man has this jump that doesn't really make sense from an action perspective, but is immediately recognizable. And is super readable even in an 8 bit game.
