Modern point-and-click adventure games have got to get meaner.

Like, I'm not calling for a return to the bad old days of moon-logic puzzles and developer-intended softlocks, but a lot of contemporary point-and-click adventure games have reached a point where they're not mean to the player at all, and frankly, the appeal to nostalgia rings hollow if you're not willing to commit. Where's the pithy wordplay? Where's the happy ending with an ironic sting? Sure, don't kill the player character every ten seconds because of stuff the player couldn't possibly have anticipated, the time for that ethos has passed – but absolutely make fun of them when they do manage to get killed, ideally with a topical pun. The ideal point-and-click experience is like being called names in such a way that it's legitimately unclear whether the person doing the calling is flirting with you or just being a dick.
