I was today years old when i found out that i was allowed time off to vote. Something no boss has ever told me.
Reblogging now but I'm also scheduling this to post again at the end of October, when folks may need a reminder that they may have right to time off work to vote.
Also: look into voting by mail (sometimes called "absentee" voting). A majority of states in the US will let you request a mail in ballot, even if you don't have an "excuse" for why you can't vote in person:
(source: Wikipedia)
Even in states that require an excuse, "I can't get time off work to vote" might well count as one. Many states also have a permanent mail-in voting list that you can sign up for, meaning you don't have to fill out the paperwork to request one for every single election. This webpage can help you figure out the exact rules for your state.
Another important distinction: some states will not accept mail in ballots that arrive after polls close on election day, others will so long as the envelope is postmarked by then. So depending on your state, you may need to put your completed ballot in the mail a few days before election day to make sure it arrives in time. In states where voting by mail is common, there may also be special ballot drop boxes you can use instead of mailing them, if you're not confident about your ballot arriving in time.
I live in Maryland, and before that, Oregon, and I have voted in every election since I turned 18. I've literally never set foot in a voting booth, and I don't ever plan to. Being able to fill out my ballot from the comfort of my own home? Being able to research candidates and issues as I fill it out? Fucking sublime.
And every single election, there are reams and reams of PRINTED BOOKLETS explaining EVERY SINGLE THING BEING VOTED, and they are SENT TO YOUR SNAIL MAIL ADDRESS!
There is NO EXCUSE for NOT KNOWING THE ISSUES.
Voters' Guides are printed for every single election: big or small, national, state, or local!
INFORM YOURSELF!
IT IS YOUR CIVIC DUTY TO INFORM AND EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT POLITICS AND HOW THEY WILL AFFECT YOUR LIFE!
Be an IN FORMED VOTER!
KNOW THE ISSUES...there is really no longer any excuse!
And check your registration every damn day until November.
Find the information you need to make registration and voting easy. Official voter registration website of the United States government.

I think my favorite genre of fanfiction is when the author says something like "this was meant to be 3 chapters but it's actually going to be 5" in the notes at the end of a chapter and you can look up at the chapter count and it's like 15 or something
It’s really depressing how Labor Day has gone from “give laborers a day off” to “give white collar office workers and executives a day off but make retail laborers work so that executives can get a latte on their day off”
Nobody is making anyone work. If you don’t want to work on that day, don’t.

Do you ever get reminded of that one really intense longfic that you had every intention of writing and had meticulous notes and complicated outlines for but then something happened and you aren't in the fandom anymore and you still have the desire to write the fic but it's slightly hollow now because it's a good idea and you think it would have been a great fic but you haven't been in the fandom for literally years and you don't have that bit of passion for it that you did when you were writing it and have just a weird moment of nostalgia where you want to reread it but it never existed
get out of my house
I thought we were going to be individuals this year. I wanted to, Clare, but my ma wouldn’t let me. Derry Girls, s01e01
Ok so my kid had an ear infection, right? As kids often do.
The doctor scraped out a bit of earwax to have a better look inside.
I was sent a bill for $200 PER EAR for this 5 second procedure which I did not give permission for them to do.
That was key- they did not ASK me if they could do this "procedure". And, as I OWN a medical practice (it's me. The medical practice is me, sitting in my house on video calls) I knew to call them when this bill came in to be like "You did not obtain informed consent for this procedure, and it was not en emergency procedure. You had full ability to gain my consent and didn't. I'm not paying."
And the massive hospital who owned the bill said "yuh-huh you do have to pay."
And I said "I own a practice. I know these laws. I do not owe you money for this."
And they conducted an "internal review" and SURPRISE! Decided I totally owed them money and they had never done anything wrong ever.
And so I called my state's Attorney General office, and explained the situation because, as I mentioned, I know the law. The AG got in touch within a couple days to say they were taking the case and would send the massive hospital conglomerate a knock it off, guys letter.
Lo and Behold, today I have a letter where said hospital graciously has agreed to forfeit the payment.
"How not to get screwed over by companies" should be part of civics class.
Know your rights and know who to call when they're infringed on. This whole process cost me $0 and honestly less effort than I would have expected.
May this knowledge find its way to someone else who can use it.
This post is super cute and all but like.... This isn't practical advice. I called the AG???? And they got involved over a $200 bill. Maybe because you yourself are a medical practitioner. Not just your knowledge but also your status.
Civics class wouldn't help most people in this case because the AG will not take on all these cases and most people cannot afford an attorney in this instance or more importantly, the hit to their credit.
The issue is not education over the system, it is the system
I agree the system is a mess but I think education does matter because people seem not to know that this is actually perfectly routine AG office stuff. I’m not the only person who’s done this- this is just what they do?
Were they going to get into a lawsuit over my $400 bill? No obviously not. But they printed up a letter on fancy letterhead to say to stop and it worked. They followed up with me the next day to be sure, and so ask how much money they had saved me.
They use dinky cases like mine to track habitual misbehavior of large scale companies to build cases they could actually go to court over.
And because people are shocked- I never spoke to the AG of my state directly. He operates mainly by overseeing a whole crew of people. And this is what those people do.
This didn’t happen because I’m special because of my tiny therapy practice.
This happened because this is what the AG office is for.
“The problem is systemic” doesn’t mean “and there’s nothing you can do”.
This is a systemic problem but that doesn’t mean there are no resources to help.
Also wtf do people keep acting like I hired an attorney? I stare very clearly that that did not happen. My taxes paid for this. Your taxes paid for this. This is what they’re supposed to be for.
