how it feels to message a friend who's having Problems that you can't do anything to help with.
my microbes
It's the fucking things! ♥️
I know that being involved in a hobby whose primary demographic is middle class white people is going to put me at risk of being exposed to folk with noxious opinions, even more so when most official communication is through facebook which is itself a notorious cesspit of people's bad opinions. Still I find it jarring when I am subjected to open racism from people in my community. I try to block people when I can, as I truly don't believe having internet arguments is a good way of accomplishing much of anything. That said, I feel the need to convey that racism and xenophobia are not values I share, so let me say it plain.
I love migrants.
My world is better for having migrants in it.
The "West" is not nor ever has been real. But migrants? They are real and they are my friends and family and neighbours. If you disagree, then you are not my friend and you are not my ally and you do not share my values. If we as a community claim to value honour and grace, then we must stand with the most vulnerable members of our community. To do otherwise is cowardice.
More freaks for the freak pile.
Die temu ad die
Hmm. Accidentally looks like latin.
It accidentally is latin
Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.
Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)
Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.
@theshitpostcalligrapher
Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking “die ad die” apart. It’s a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I can’t think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!
Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)
So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.
I saw that ablative “die” and that final -u on “temu” and thought of the ablative supine (as in “mirabile dictu”) but as you observe, there isn’t a verb that “temu” could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.
But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.
....oh my god. You might be a genius. Because what else does Tumblr do but daily disgrace [itself, oneself, and/or numerous others] in the manner of the day, and make numerous scribal errors.
how dare you say we error on the scribes
this is what happens when you buy your latin on temu
This is probably a point thats been made before but it bugs me when people act like the manticore is a suicide bomb mech because like. random guy in a cheap everest clone might not know about the angry water, or the fucked up horse, or why their mech is walking out of the airlock, but Everyone knows about the manticore. everyone knows that if you kill me, I'm taking you with me. The massive starlet coral is, well, massive! The polyps grow in colonies up to 2 m (6.5 ft) across. Because they often form the shape of boulders or mounts, they are able to weather strong waves and currents- providing a protective barrier for the rest of the reef.

I can't stop thinking of Grace being reborn on the ship. Gosling calls the coma bag his amniotic sac. He's released from it wobbly, frightened, struggling to speak, like a brand-new baby; is stunned to find out he's been released into an enormous universe with no instructions. He encounters death immediately without understanding. He has to learn to know himself from nothing--"Am I smart?" He cries and screams over how overwhelming it all is, like a toddler shoved into a world he can't control.
Through his angsty teen stage he is learning the little things that make him himself -- he likes cilantro, he has muscles, he has a sciencey brain -- but none of that gives him a purpose. He goes into depressed undergrad party mode, in a silly hat, soaked in vodka, asking himself what the point of it all is.
But then he sees the ship's golden wall carved with the mission, the memory of the people before him who worked to get him this far, the children coming after him who are depending on him, and something shifts. His shoulders straighten. He takes a deep breath and tosses the little Earth-ball into the air. He understands very little yet, like any young graduate just trying to join the flow of community and history. But Grace has found his adulthood.
After that he can face mortality, responsibility; he puts on his uniform, buries his crewmates. He can grieve them properly and face the future for Earth's sake. After that he's ready to try to meet the moment he's in, even though like all of us he knows now that he will die. And he is ready to meet and love the people different from him who will become his family, his home. He has dealt with fear and loneliness and loss; he's ready for life. He's grown up.
Fun fact, you can put the entirety of the Communist Manifesto in an ask
Inadvisable tabletop RPG jam premise #137: Game jam where each entry consists solely of paratextual discussion of the mechanics of a hypothetical or invented RPG; examples include an errata document, a developer Q&A, or a forum thread debating the correct interpretation of a particular rule.
@shoutyourporpoise replied:
I could SWEAR you’ve made this post before, or perhaps this is such a characteristically “you” concept that I already imagined a world in which you had
I don't think so, no. I did once (unintentionally) curate a game jam about writing supplements for invented or hypothetical games, the product of which you can find here, but this is a different thing.
(If anyone really wants this one to be a thing, though, feel free to toss your entry into the reblogs. I'm not going to do a proper game jam on itch.io or whatever because its UI really wants you to have cover art and a promotional blurb and such, and this doesn't feel like it warrants it!)
Does the Enchantment Level increase from working with another artificer of equal level stack with the Wondrous Materials modifier? Do they stack past level 30?

Just like the title says.
The rules text for Fine Materials from Principia says
Fine materials […] when used for an enchantment project, allow you to create things beyond your normal limits, including beyond the normal level cap of 30. […] wondrous materials allow an increase of three levels.
It’s obvious they meant this to go past 30, since they say it, but notably, they also extend the enchantment time/cost/difficulty table to level 33, and add 31 to the prime table, so they clearly have support for it.
The problem is that Toil and Trouble adds tandem enchantment, and I don’t know what to make of its rules!
The text reads:
While enchanters normally guard their secrets jealously, working alone, they can perform remarkable feats together. […] if allowing total cooperation, where no secrets are kept from each other, the boost increases to 5.
Which, unlike Principia, doesn’t stipulate it can go past level 30, but also doesn’t specify otherwise.
Muddying the waters, Toil and Trouble doesn’t extend the time/cost/difficulty table, but does give the appropriate formula for how to calculate those values at each level past 25 (which do line up with Principia).
Perhaps most importantly, if these modifiers did stack, we would have access to the prime 37 enchantments, which are not described anywhere in the book to my knowledge.
My instinct is that tandem enchantment caps at 30, or else does not stack with wondrous materials.

P.125:Principia states the following on the topic of stacking buffs.
When multiple effects modify some element of the creation process, they apply only to what portion of the process makes logical sense. A 10% reduction to the cost of reagents will not reduce the cost of shipping the final product. When two effects modify overlapping sections of the creation process, additive/subtractive effects are applied simultaneously, then multiplicative effects are applied simultaneously.
Then on P.169:Principia, we see
Drunkenness – A state of intoxication, whether by alcohol or other, more exotic substances, caps an enchanter’s effective level at 2 levels below their actual level, regardless of any other buffs
From this we can gather that multiple ‘effective level’ effects should be able to stack (there just wasn’t another such effect that increased levels, as of Principia), and that if they intend something to set a cap, they probably will.
That implies that, yes, you can technically create a level 38 enchantment (or 37).
As for what the theoretical prime 37 enchantments would be, I would point to P.56:Principia on the existing prime enchantments, which says:
Often, a player may wish to create an enchantment that is outside the scope of the primes, especially as it is recommended for a character to have an eventual capstone goal for their enchanting career. In such cases, it is worth remembering that the only enchantment known categorically to be impossible is one that confers true immortality. It may be possible to approximate using a combination of primes, or else by adding the functionality to an existing prime. Page 287 lists commonly used prime combinations.
Which is to say: A prime can have whatever functionality it needs to for a game to make sense. Considering 37 is so far beyond normal enchanting as to be unthinkable to the average enchanter, it makes a logical place to put whatever macguffin result overarches the whole game.
And to be clear, when I say ‘unthinkable’ I mean unthinkable; taking a look at the formula in T&T more closely, as well as taking into account the cost of using Wondrous Materials (or even Marvellous Materials, if you just want a new prime)
First, a theoretical level 38 enchanted item would take over 40 years for an enchanter to create (and no, you don’t get the assistant improvement to creation time from tandem enchantment, you’re doing it purely for the level boost).
Second, the cost, (including the increase from wondrous materials), would be on the order of 12 million gold.
Even if you had the time and the money, you’d still be stuck, because setbacks are rolled for on a monthly basis, and lose a percentage of progress. Without mitigation, you’re looking at losing 4 to 20 years of progress, about every two years. Mathematically, your odds of completing this project, are basically zero, especially if you’re mortal.
The only way to have a reasonable chance of creating an item with level 37/38 enchantments is to have two lead enchanters of level 29/30, with functionally limitless funding, and then also, to have some significant number of assistants, who, I will note, will have to be of at least level 27 to 28, due to the 10 level gap limit for assistants. Doing the math, a quick and dirty estimate suggests you’ll need at least 5 such assistants to maybe break even, and realistically, you’ll the maximum 18-19 of them to actually get the project done in a reasonable timeframe, which, may I note, is still ten years, which is probably more like twenty years, due to the probability of setbacks.
That is to say, to create a prime 37 enchantment, you need a team of about 20 world class enchanters to spend 10-20 years of their lives, with limitless funding (likely in the realm of 50 million gold, after accounting for who you have to pay, and the increased material cost from setbacks), to put their lives entirely on hold, and pool the entirety of their knowledge without reservation.
That is not a two person project. That is the manhattan project. That is the project that your players will, in the endgame, either get pulled into, or have to resist getting pulled into. That is an overarching plot thread that is running from the very beginning of the game.
What will it do? Frankly, that is entirely up to the game master. It may literally be the manhattan project.
