I need you guys to understand. That I just HAPPENED to walk onto the back porch at work while a man was mansplaining “methinks the lady doth protest too much” to his date. And I had to physically restrain myself from correcting him and promoting my production of Hamlet coming up lol.

He said that the quote is from Macbeth (wrong you fool it’s from Hamlet) and then that you say it when someone is lying. WRONG u say it when the lady doth protest too much. Why are you stupid and acting like your date is stupid for not knowing what it means when YOU don’t know what it means.

#it's an interesting quote because people think it means that the lady in question is denying something so eagerly she's probably lying #but Gertrude actually says it about an actor in a play who she thinks is overacting and not believable #BUT Gertrude is saying this to evade hamlet asking how the queen character makes her feel #so she's throwing this banal criticism out there to hide her own guilt #which is funnily enough close to what people think the quote means #fyi one of my favourite discussion points about Shakespeare is the connection between what pop culture makes him and what he really is

has anybody else noticed that the classic sci fi novel Don’t Create The Torment Nexus features a Torment Nexus? that’s pretty problematic of the author

the main character eventually recognizes the torment nexus is bad but by that point I had already stopped reading the book because I don't condone the torment nexus, the narrative really should've condemned it outright :/
