Name meanings

May Briar: May refers to the month, which in turn is named after the spring goddess Maia. As her canon name, it matches the spring theme of her name in the Japanese version, Haruka, which means spring flower. Briar refers to thorny vines found on wild plants, more specifically roses, and figuratively means something prickly and unpleasant. Combined with her first name, it's meant to give the two-faced image of a plant with pretty flowers and sharp thorns.

Sidney Moya: Sidney is a short version of Saint-Denis, a location-based name which is in turn derived from Dionysus, the god of wine, theater and madness. As his canon name, it's meant to be a short version of insidious as well. Moya is another location-based name which typically refers to someone living on the outer border of a settlement. Coincidentally, moya is also a word for volcanic mud. The surname doesn't really tie into the first name that much aside from the two just sounding cool together.

Anabel Blanche: Anabel is a combined version of Anna, which means graceful, and Belle, which means beauty. As her canon name, it's a reference to her battle facility being the one that tests ability, as well as the fact that most trainers will be unable to even reach her unless they absolutely master the game. Blanche means white, in the sense of it being the color of pure light that combines everything together, and it's also a pun on blank, referencing her blank slate nature as a faller. Also, her initials are the first two letters of the alphabet.

By the time of the weather crisis, Sidney was in the Elite 4 for about 2 years, having replaced Flannery's grandfather. Incidentally, Kabu was considered for that same position as well due to a family connection, but through a series of many different factors Sidney joined the Elite 4 while Kabu joined the Galar League.

Despite that, Sidney was by no means the most recent member of the Hoenn League at the time. Norman and Flannery both joined after him, and with Wallace becoming the new champion, Juan took over the Sootopolis Gym in the meantime as well. Phoebe, Glacia and Drake all predate him, though.

The Hoenn Elite 4 member that May's closest to is Sidney. He's a really chill guy that makes everyone feel welcome once you get past the horrifying vibes, and since he makes a point to act as a leader figure for the Elite 4 who organizes all of their disjointed goals and wants into something cohesive, he's usually the one who spends the most time speaking directly with the champion. May likes him because he makes things really easy for her, on top of being a consistently calm presence in the middle of all the chaos always happening in Hoenn.

He's also technically her stepdad, but she'll never call him that.

Amanoverse Sidney during the events of the Hoenn games was in his early 20s, about 22 or 23

All things considered surprisingly young but the punk makeup does wonders towards making him look older
