Can you give me some ideas for interesting conflicts for a character to have? I'm mostly looking for conflicts they may have with other characters, or conflicts they might have with an organisation or guild that another character is a part of. Thanks!
Hmm, this made me like actually think for once. Good question!
Here are some ideas you might like (based on what you specified):
Give the two characters conflicting philosophies, (this is a super overused trope but if you do it right it can work) if you want to make it more interesting give them similar philosophies that have one main difference. E.g. They both believe killing is okay, but one only believes it's okay for defence, while the other believe it's okay in any situation.
Another overused one: The organisation endorses killing, other character does NOT endorse killing
Similar to the above one, the organisation believes something that the other character does not
Make one character have a goal that the other doesn't approve of
Have two (or more) characters share a goal/motive but both of their traits are a barrier in reaching the goal
One character's decision is the direct cause of conflict (e.g. death, injury, property damage) have the other character blame them for the conflict. To make this even better make it so that the other character AGREED with this decision or
Two characters fight over something small, this reveals a deeper problem
Two characters are faced with two choices, but both choices have positive and negative consequences, one character wants to choose the first option, one character wants to choose the second
A character is completely at peace with their tragic destiny, the other character is NOT okay with their tragic destiny
Organisation wants to kill character 1 (or people LIKE character 1), character 2 is in the organisation- a way to make this even better is character 1 not knowing character 2 is in the organisation until a moment of tension and danger (e.g. while character 1 is being captured)
Different views on a situation
Two characters have different worldviews. E.g. Beliefs on human nature: one believes humans are inherently selfish and evil, the other believes humans are inherently kind
A character doesn't believe another character when it matters most
A character realising the other character is toxic
Being on opposing sides of a war- this could work with one character's organisation/guild fighting against the other characters organisation/guild and that's what causes the conflict
Character 1 only became close to character 2 because of orders from their organisation- character 2 finds out (whether they have actually begun to start caring about character 2 is up to you)
One character only became close to another character in order to enact revenge- the other character finds out
A character is too loyal (willing to die, will do anything they ask without question, etc.) to another character
One character is too cold, apathetic or calculating after someone's death- this can be a loved one or someone they don't know well
A character cares more about legacy than the present
Conflicting character traits- this is pretty basic but can work really well
One character wants to enact revenge- the other is in their way
A character cares about the other character- but not the people the other character loves
A character has a blatant disregard for their own safety
Two characters grieve in conflicting ways (e.g. one is silent and doesn't want to speak, the other copes through sharing stories about lost loved one and making sure they're remembered)
These aren't specifically what you specified BUT they are interesting to explore:
Murphy's law: Anything that can go wrong WILL go wrong
Having to give up an item of emotional importance
A leader being abandoned by their own people
A redemption arc that comes a little too late
Character makes an honest mistake that leads to negative consequences and endangers the people they love
Having to watch a loved one be tortured, unable to do anything about it
Character(s) are told that the thing they have been searching for doesn't exist
I could add more to this but then I'd be here all day.
