hi! so to be honest i’m not sure if i can say anything helpful so to answer your question i enlisted the help of two skilled artists, @penguinkiwi and @chemens, to pass on their sage advice !!
practice! this is unavoidable, but the results will pay off. no one has gotten where they are without practice.
don’t start immediately on big projects, you’ll get overwhelmed with everything
focus on the basics first! take time to learn or get comfy with your program before you start doing things like adding brushes, animating, etc
don’t be afraid to use guides, tutorials, references
3D Bases and models are your friends, legit do not be afraid to trace a POSE but never trace ART (super important !!! stealing art is not good)
for characters who are POC and/or a different culture from yours, always check and ask others about features before going ahead with your work, and avoid stereotypes. do thorough research and learn what is appropriate and not before doing something potentially disrespectful
don’t stress about not having a signature style yet, sometimes people develop theirs, other times they never do but that’s not a bad thing at all!
remember to take breaks. it’s quite easy to get frustrated when your art doesn’t turn out the way you envisioned, especially when you’re just starting out, but remember to be patient with yourself. frustration can easily lead to burn out and a loss of interest, which won’t be good in the long run.
