Also note how the different parts of former Yugoslavia, Czechia and Slovakia, and the different parts of the former Soviet Union all use the dotted/dashed lines for internal subdivisions that are notably also used for US states. This is one 1989-ass map.

Which probably means some scientist wrote this program in BASIC or Fortran in 1985 and it's worked so well that it's never been replaced since. And honestly, that deserves some kudos.
