i would honestly do a whole damn essay on why every single song on folklore and evermore relates to at least one carry on a character perfectly.

thinking about any way the wind blows and how like… it was built up to be about post-trauma and dealing with trauma and like…moving forward. I thought it would be a book i’d be seeing myself in, in that regard. But it’s just… lacking? kind of? I would’ve loved to see Simon actually process more trauma instead of just his physical intimacy issues, you know?
this is prolly a bad take but i can’t stop thinking about it
To add on, I really wish it had been addressed that penny has her own trauma, too. She used to have nightmares as a result of being terrorized by the humdrum? She definitely intellectualizes her emotions instead of just *feeling* them. She had a codependent relationship with Simon, which likely scared the living daylights out of Mitali (she saw what happens when that becomes extreme…Davy & Lucy) & her trying to enforce some healthy distance likely just caused more tension between them. Idk I love our highly capable mage with adorable knees, but cmon, she deserves therapy… the whole gang does
Idk if I have a bigger crush on Penelope or Shepard……
I’ve thought the same thing… the only answer I have is polyamory
Yo does anyone got a Simon Snow discord or should one be made? I desperately wanna discuss the third book& what I think could have been done to make it better, but also gush about what I did like… I’m shameless after all, these characters have my heart.
Hey! I finished any way the wind blows within two days of retrieving it. Here’s some garbled takes from a very much not qualified writer:
Spoilers obviously!!!!!
- I felt like there was something missing with the plot. There was a lot of fan service (I don’t want that retracted, I LOVED it all) & I do think Rainbow made a good choice by not making this an epic. It just wouldn’t be coherent to do so given a lot of the novel is about what happens after the dust settles. HOWEVER, I feel like some of the most interesting points were left until the end… if I could change it, I think I would have made Simon’s linage apart of the plot sooner, maybe even forgo smith smith poo pants completely. I would have loved for them to have travelled to the small home where Lucy resided (it would be apart of the deed, or perhaps Simon would have found evidence of it amongst the Mage’s things) & Simon slowly uncover his mother through the surroundings… finding rose bushes that have somehow remained as vibrant and lively as they had two decades ago, old school photos that revealed Mitali to be close to them etc. I think it would be very powerful to also draw parallels as to how Penny’s mum might feel apprehensive towards Simon because their friendship would remind her too much of Davy & Lucy in a way, but also just being envious that her daughter has her friend still and she doesn’t 😭
- someone please acknowledge Agatha and comp het… some sort of conversation regarding how she wasn’t just playing the role as the chosen ones girl, but also as a heterosexual woman.
- Ever since I read people theorizing that Dragon!Simon can CHOOSE whether magic affects him, I am very much convinced this would have been such a good device within the writing. Simon realizing that while he may not have magic, he has the autonomy to choose what harms him from now, onward!!! (Not only magic, but just in general… pls Simon, therapy can teach you this, you don’t have to go on another adventure to learn it either!!)
-Mayybe some more focus on body image for Simon! We know he’s gained weight and is much softer, but maybe him being able to reconcile that his body has changed and that’s okay (baby steps!)
- these are shameless head canons:
Sherpard is trans masculine & he ultimately becomes a magical therapist, despite being a normal. PLEASE IT WOULD BE PERFECT FOR HIM
ok ok i have some thoughts.
so in wayward son, baz finds out he’s different from other vampires like lamb because he’s not immortal (i’m not sure what vampire lore rainbow rowell is basing the books off of but i don’t think he can be immortal because he would still be a baby like when he was bitten, and not aT LeAsT ThReE iNcHeS tAlLeR tHaN sImOn). so my question is why isn’t he immortal? why isn’t he an eternal baby?
my theory is that it’s because he’s never drank human blood before. and this has kept me up so many nights because HOW IS THIS GONNA GET RESOLVED?? HE CANT DRINK HUMAN BLOOD BUT HES MALNOURISHED AND LITERALLY THE ONLY WAY HE CAN LIVE UP TO HIS FULL POTENTIAL IS TO DRINK HUMAN BLOOD BUT THEN HE’LL BE IMMORTAL AND HAVE TO WATCH SIMON AND PENNY AND EVERYONE HE LOVES DIE I CANT-
i could be totally wrong about this, and i probably am because no one’s talking about it?? did i miss something???
guys please tell me your theories i’m freaking out
Honestly, i would love there to be a specific reason why vampires choose to feed off humans despite the obvious consequences/issues that arise from the practice, so I hope this is apart of it! I also think Baz’s paleness is simply a side effect of malnutrition. They make several references in wayward that other vampires aren’t nearly as pasty as our poor boy.
I do wonder if rainbow will choose to put Baz into a situation where he’d have to feed off Simon… I think it would be interesting because as a couple not knowing how to function without the high emotions of their initial rivalry could directly mirror that of Baz’s fear that he cannot moderate his own thirst.
Ahhh there’s so much to consider!!!
“it’s okay,” baz says. “it’s all okay now.” one arm is tight around simon’s back, and the other is smoothing his hair out of his face. “you did it, didn’t you?” baz whispers. “you defeated the humdrum. you saved the day, you courageous fuck. you absolute nightmare.”
Sorry, wasn’t able to post anything. But after seeing the absolutely gorgeous AWTWB cover, I had to do something. Hope you guys like it. They supposed to be a set.

OT3 this bitch and throw Baz’s ass into another office MORE THERAPY. Get kinky, throw couple’s therapy in there once they work on themselves.
Otherwise, Penny and Shep need each other because I want it for REASONS and the tornado quote is at least 15 of them.
THIS MAN IS TESTING ME,,
an old saz sketch
I've read/listened to CO more times than I can count, and I think why I have (when I typically don't ever consume one type of media like this) is because I always come out knowing/understanding something new.
Obviously, I'm here for Baz and Simon and the rest of the gang. But I remember my second time reading, I grasped more the actual tragedy of the story. Particularly with the adults story. They aren't the main focus, but there's so much there that you can infer. I think what really hit me was the lost friendship between Lucy and Penny's mom. The scene were they last saw each other doesn't seem that important, but personally I see it as a prime example of how a manipulative partner can influence your other relationships and consequently add distance to them. Lucy had people who truly cares for her. And though maybe the Mage cared for her in his own way, he used her. I couldn't help but morn the life her and Simon could have had. And writing about it now, I believe the second time reading I truly morned for the characters. For Lucy, for Simon, for Ebb, for Baz, etc—they have been and go through so much but you wish they don't because they deserve so much more. But that's life. Tragedy where it's not fair and in the end you just have to carry on.
And now more recently I got in the mood to relisten to the audiobook. This time around, having read WS and many tumblr treads about the series, I noticed more about Simon. How the Mage treated him, how uncomfortable he is with physical contact, how he thinks people view him. But honestly I think this time around, I just realized how sad Simon is. He doesn't really act it, seeing how that's how he lives life. He doesn't think about the past or the future—he more or less always lives in the current. But we know he dreamed of having parents. The best he had was the Mage and Ebb. Physical contact isn't his thing because he never had it. Only kissed on the lips, never a parental or familiar kiss on the forehead or whatnot as a way to show a sign of care and affection. Always sent off to care homes in the summer. A place he never felt safe in where he always had to have his guard up. And the only time he was wanted somewhere was to fulfill a position in their society. It's no wonder Simon is at a loss in his life, let alone his relationship. I know it's been said, but he's no longer the choose one, and the closest thing he had to a father (is his father but he doesn't know that) told him that was his worth. And URG, there's just so much to say about him. Like how he had trouble speaking as a child and he himself recognized "it was easier to take than to ask." (Which is, admittedly, not a good quote, Simon.) He never learned to communicate, so his actions are the closest to speaking his truth. But now he doesn't know how to communicate what he feels and probably doesn't realize how good it can be to figure stuff out together rather than always be in your head. And don't get me started with WS and the ending. I'm glad he's starting to make goals and try to get in a better place, but he's still has a ways to go. So in conclusion: Simon needs a fucking hug, a therapist, and I need to cry.
But the real conclusion is that Carry On has so much to give. I didn't even scratch the surface. But it's what makes it one of my favourite book and how I'm literally dying for the third book.
Now if you'll excuse me, I will be in a 7 monthish comma until AWTWB is out.
Let it be known that until Rainbow Rowell addresses the allegations of racism found in her novel Eleanor & Park, & how they have distressed/disturbed readers (especially that of Asian heritage) my participation in the Simon Snow fandom is purely that of celebrating my love for the characters and their story. I do not condone the author in anyway. After the third novel comes out, I have also chosen to cease any purchases from her (books, prints, etc). It’s simply not acceptable!
Baz: do you want to know how i actually hurt my wrists? Shepard: of course. Baz: i was hula-hooping, i take a class for fun Shepard: *wispers* oh my god Baz: i’ve master all the moves: the pizza toss, the tornado, the scorpion, the oopsie-doodle… Shepard: *filling with joy* why are you telling me this?? Baz: because no one will ever believe you.
person: so how did you two meet?
Baz:
Simon: we pretended to hate each other for 8 years
person (and the fandom): whyyyyyy
