SUMMARY: you gotta fake it to make it
When Jay called you at work and told you he needed to see you at the twenty-first district as soon as possible you have to admit you were a little nervous. You hadnât done anything wrong and even if so you are sure your brother would have handled it for you.
When you arrived Sergeant Platt took you up to the intelligence unit and before leaving she hugged you so tightly while whispering âBe Safeâ which only confused and scared you more.
âMiss Halstead might I see you in here with me pleaseâ Voights deep tone called out across the room.
Walking into the room all the blinds were closed and it was dark with an exception of the lamp in the corner âVoight whatâs going on?â
âDo you recognise these peopleâ he laid out five pictures of dead bodies in front of you, pondering on the pictures for a minute until it clicked âUm yeah I went to school with these girls thatâs Natalie Charles, Rebecca Smith, Chantelle Easton, Lora Brooks and Jennifer something I thinkâ
You could see your brother in the corner of the room sighing and scratching the nape of his neck, something him and Will do when they are nervous or stressed. A habit that you didnât inherit.
âDoes someone want to tell me whatâs going on? Why are these girls dead?â
âWe donât know who is doing it but youâve just given us our first clue, all in your senior graduating class. Thatâs something I can work withâ Voight picks up all the files from the table and walks out into the bullpen to inform everyone of this newly found information.
You turned to Jay âAm I in danger?â
Hopping out of his seat âNo, I am not going to let anything happen to you I promise Iâm going to keep you safe. We donât even know this guys motive or anythingâ
You sat around the precinct for a couple more hours but nobody was telling you anything but they had taken your phone and called into your work informing them that you were taking time off for your safety.
Jay was talking to you in an attempt to distract you from everything happening around the district right now, Ruzek and Kim has been sent out together to visit the families of the victims, Antonio and Hailey had been sent to the morgue to examine the links between all victims.
You had to give Kevin all of your social media and email information so that he could do an in depth hunt into everything and pick out anything suspicious.
He had been sat at his computer looking for a while before he finally exclaimed âI found something!â and everyone huddled up behind his monitor to see what he was looking at.
âY/N has just received an email inviting her to a ten year high school reunion, if this guy is targeting her senior class then what better place to do it than at a reunion when they will all be thereâ
Jay had a look of discomfort on his face âWe canât just send her there, what if this guy wants to target herâ
Voight looked over at Jay âHalstead I am not going to put her in any danger. Iâll have Ruzek go undercover with her and we will be there too, weâre going to catch this son of a bitchâ
And so for the next few weeks you guys planned your undercover operation. The story was that you and Adam were in a relationship and he was your plus one to the reunion, you guys would scope out any odd behaviour and try lure the guy away from the hall and then put the cuffs on him.
You and Adam had to hang out a lot more lately not just for your safety but you had to post about him on your social media as to not cause suspicion when you showed up together. So Adam had been taking you out for lunches, to the cinema and other dates. He had also been staying at your apartment until you fell asleep every night mainly because you were just scared to be alone.
You would be lying if you said you didnât have a crush on Ruzek but Jay had told the both of you when you first met that you guys couldnât date because you were his sister and Adam was his best friend, the two of you disregard Jay and continued to see eachother for a few weeks until you called it off saying that you couldnât do that to your brother.
Truth be told the feelings that you had for Adam never disappeared but you respected your brother way too much to do anything about it. Jay and Will never liked you dating, when you were in highschool guys would always ask you out and you had to say no due to the threats of your brothers. There was a guy in your class who must have asked you out at least twice a week for a year straight and you said no every time because he creeped you out, it soon turned into harassment so much so that Jay went to the guys house and threatened him.
After weeks of preparation the night had finally come for you to catch this guy.
âYou look amazing!â Kim exclaimed watching you walk down the stairs of the precinct, trying to adjust the wire you were wearing that was inconveniently places in between your boobs. Kim and Hailey has helped you pick out a dress because regardless of if this was an undercover mission you still wanted to look good.
âThank You, whereâs Adam?â You asked and were pointed in the direction of one of the offices at the front of the building.
You walked in to find Adam with Antonio, Kevin and Jay standing around him trying to fix his outfit and wire.
âWell this is a sight to seeâ you laughed walking over to Ruzek and moving the other boys out of the way âWhoever done this tie must be blindâ taking the tie off of his shirt you placed it around your own neck doing it and putting it back on Adam over his head, sorting out the rest of his outfit before standing back to have a look at him.
âLooks goodâ you complimented.
A cheeky smirk appears on his face âDonât look to bad yourselfâ
âThatâs still my little sister Ruzek, watch it!â Jay says standing in between you two.
As if on cue Voight walks into the room, handing Jay, Kevin, Kim and Hailey janitors outfits.
âOk so quick brief of tonightâs situation; you four will be dressed as janitors and stationed around the school Me and Dawson will be in the van outside listening to everything from all of you guys. Y/N and Ruzek will go in and act like they would at any party but if you notice anything try start conversations with people and make em say something. Got it?â Everyone nodded and headed off in their vehicles.
When you got there the party was already in full swing with a hall filled with people.
âDo you guys have any idea why this guys trying to murder all the girls in my senior class?â You asked, your arms interlocked with Adamâs as you walked side by side into the hall.
âNo clue, but I promise you he wonât lay a finger on you. Not if I can help itâ You admired his protectiveness over you.
âWell letâs just hope we catch him thenâ and so the search began, you spoke to so many people and had conversations that bored you to death. So many people asked about you and Adam and how you met which was a story you had rehearsed for the past three weeks.
âI think we pull of this whole couple thing quite well donât you Ruzek?â
âYeah, I could picture itâ
Taking his hand in yours you looked up and said âMaybe if you grow some balls you wonât have to picture itâ
You had spoke to so many guys that were there, trying to throw in the casual âOh where are you living now?â Or the âBeen on Vacation lately?â To try and sus out alibiâs for people and most of them checked out.
âOh my goodness is that Y/N Halstead?â A voice came from behind you, you turned around to see a man you didnât recognise.
âIâm sorry, do I know you?â You asked causing a angered look so flash over his face âItâs me, Derek Smith. Iâm the guy that asked you out for like a year straightâ
You knew this was your guy, you could just feel it in your gut âOh yeah Derek! Sorry Iâve just seen so many faces around here tonight how could I have forgotten youâ you exclaimed.
âI seen on Facebook you have a new boyfriend. Isnât he here with you tonight?â
You nodded and pointed towards the bathrooms âYeah heâs here just gone to the toiletâ truth was that he had a feel that it was some guy who had just gone into the bathroom so he went in their too to interrogate him.
âSo big tough guy can get a yes to a date but I canâtâ he joked but you could sense the underlying tone of seriousness.
âVery funny Derek, we were just kids back then anyways it wouldnât have lastedâ
he laughed âYeah I guess youâre right, hey I wanna show you something come with meâ Adam was still nowhere in sight but you knew that if you made Derek leave you would miss the chance to put this guy in prison and so you obliged and followed him out into the school hallway.
âWhat did you wanna show me?â You ask, the nervousness in your voice becoming apparent.
âTell me Y/N does your brother still work for intelligence? Is that why your here?â Your cover was blown, you knew that Voight would be so angry sitting in the van right now so you tried to stretch this as far as it would go.
âYou mean William? No heâs a doctor silly and Iâm here for the reunion get to see everyone again, why else would I be here?â
His hand moved to the back of his jeans and grasped onto something âbecause you know I killed those girls! and now Iâm going to kill youâ he pulled out a gun and aimed it straight for your head âyou never should have said no Y/N, you should have gone out with meâ
Although you were terrified you tried to keep yourself looking calm âLook Derek you donât have to do this, nobody knows you killed them if you let me go we can forget this ever happenedâ He let out an evil characters laugh.
âThatâs just it Y/N. I want to kill you, I want you to know how I felt all those times you said no to me and how it made me feel when your bastard brother threatened meâ You had closed your eyes now, just accepting the fact you were about to die.
âIâm going to kill yo-â he was cut off âPut the gun downâ you opened your eyes to see Adam stood with his gun to Dereks head âI said put the gun down manâ
Dereks hand wobbled but the gun was still pointed at you, you could see Kim and Hailey weâre approaching behind and you could only assume Jay and Kevin were close too âI wonât tell you another time, put the gun downâ without hesitation Derek pulled the trigger and the bullet went straight for you, hitting you right in the shoulder.
Another few shots were fired but not from Dereks gun, Adam ran to your side whilst the others checked on Derek.
The blood was spurting out from your wound âOh my god Y/N, Iâm sorry Iâm so sorry I should have been hereâ
Your head was pounding and you felt really dizzy âItâs ok, we got himâ you smiled, curling into Adam.
âYeah we did, Iâm gonna lift you ok weâll get you to medâ Ruzek lifted you into his car and had tried to wrap the wound as good as possible to stop bleeding on the way to med where you were met with Will who took care of you.
The bullet missed every vital thing that it could have hit and it went straight through so you didnât take long to fix up, Will still have you a long talk about how it was dangerous and that a civilian shouldnât have been there he couldnât believe that Jay put you in a position to get shot.
âWill could you stop shouting and just ask Jay to come in hereâ he nodded and headed out to the waiting room not long after you had everyone come into your room.
âHey Sisâ Jay walked over to the bed and kissed the top of your head âthat was some shot you took, Iâm just glad your okâ you smiled in return and said âIâm just happy that you got the guy, I always knew he was a creepâ
Everyone hung about for a while, discussing a possible place for you in intelligence which you politely declined âtonight was a one off, I could not do that everyday. I think Iâll stick to working at the bankâ
Towards the end of the night everyone dispersed leaving only you and Adam.
âHey, you havenât said much to me tonight since I got hereâ you said.
âIâm so sorry Y/N I should have been there with you. You wouldnât have gotten hurtâ
âAdam Iâm alive and we caught the guy thatâs a win for me, I got shot thatâs gonna be a hell of a story to tell everyone. Stop blaming yourselfâ You swung your legs out over the bed and hopped onto the floor walking over to the chair in which Ruzek sat.
âI just donât know what I would have done if something had happened to you, how were you so calm!â You places your hands on either side of his face and sat down on his lap, your faces only inches apart
âBecause I knew my knight in shining armour would come and save me, thatâs exactly what you didâ
âI love you Y/Nâ that took you by shock, complete shock.
âYeah, I think I love you too Adamâ you both leaned in and kissed, taking your head back you giggled and said âNo, I definitely love youâ
