"Why the long face?"
Looking up from his lunch Dwight was greeted with a familiar face. Her father was one of the first officer’s to accept him as chief when he took the role and he had been grateful for that.
“Oh hey Emma, it’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

Dwight let out a sigh, she was persistent he would give her that. He knew she was only trying to make him get out of his slump so he didn’t just tell her to leave him alone like he had everyone else that morning.
“So I’m Chief Pouty now?” He asked, an eyebrow raised.
Even in the mood he was in he had to admit that nickname amused him.
“I’ll be fine tomorrow, today just isn’t a good day.”
Should he tell her that today would have been Lizzie’s birthday? It might make it easier for her to understand why there wasn’t really anything to make his day better. He missed his daughter everyday but her birthday always made him miserable.
“Would you prefer Chief Mopey? You’re less intimidating viking and more sad teddy bear at the moment.”
Her question was asked with a raise of one brow for just a heartbeat before she smiled. She was determined to get at least a smile out of Dwight, even if it turned out she wouldn’t be able to do much else to cheer him up.
Dwight was somewhat amused that he was considered an intimidating viking at any time. Sometimes he didn’t realize how he came off to people.
“So I was a viking and now I’m a teddy bear?” He asked, brow raised yet again.
He had to give her credit, at least she was keeping him occupied. That meant less time for his self-loathing thoughts about how losing Lizzie was his fault to take over entirely.
“You know what might make me feel a little better is getting out of here and getting a fresh cup of coffee.” He told her as he got to his feet.
“You’re welcome to join me if you want, you can come up with some more names for me.”
