can't believe i hit the age i only used to dream about, i thought id have my life all together by this point, and in some ways i have, but not the way i was thinking. im in a loving relationship with the girl of my dreams, been out (kind of) as bisexual for more than a year, made so many new friends, cried more than i had as a child, laughed, gotten angry, and developed and lost interests.
despite everything, im still grateful to get to this point in my life, there are so many who didnt make it, and sometimes i felt as if that would be me. but im alive, im well, im happy, and im finally 18. :)
I know people like to compare Anaxa with Ratio or Alhaitham, and that's fine. Alhaitham specifically is an expy of Su from honkai impact 3rd who Anaxa is also an expy of. But I'm surprised I dont see more comparisons made between Anaxa and Ruan Mei. I feel they're more similar character wise than Ratio or Alhaitham.
Yeah Anaxa has a personality type similar to those two but its only a surface level. In terms of ideology and methodology, Anaxa is more like Ruan Mei.
They both value their research over other people even if they care about them. For Ruan Mei, she's apathetic to the world and is often called a recluse. She likes the trailblazer well enough, but she doses them before even getting to know them because her research was that important to her. And I don't think it's something she particularly regrets. She's generally pleasant and benevolent but nothing matters more than her research. For Anaxa, he genuinely cares about his students and pushes them to grow and loves when they challenge him but he's not passionate for teaching others like Ratio, his research matters more. He collected information on his fellow chrysos heirs, former students, and even his teacher's assistant because he valued his research more than their privacy.
They both are interested in the act of creation over care. In Ruan Mei's case, she will create autonomous beings and then abandon them for the next experiment. Not out of any cruelty, she just doesn't have the capability to become a caretaker for them because she's not able to become emotionally attached to them. For Anaxa, his methodology for creation is equivalent exchange. He wants to create something out of nothing only at the cost of sacrifice. He has no care for himself in the act of creation, he will give up parts of himself to create and do the impossible.
To expand on their research more, both of their interests are 'what is life?' Ruan Mei conducts her research because she wants to uncover the origin of life, where it ends, and what exactly it is. She even asks what are aeons are as well. Anaxa wants to answer the question 'what are we?' He's only answered what gods are, he wants to find the answer of what humans are i.e. the origin of life.
And I think the most important similarity is that they both wish to become divine. The crux of Ruan Mei's research is to become an aeon. She grew up in a family of researchers on a planet blessed by the abundance and has always observed the lives and deaths of different beings, including her parents. This sparked her obsession with creation, life, and death. The question of what aeons are is the reason she wants to become one. By experiencing aeonhood herself, she could discover even more about life and creation.
Anaxa is infamous for his disrespectful and blasphemous attitude towards the gods because it's his belief that what makes up humans and what makes up gods is the same thing. He wants to become a god because it would confirm for him his research. Similar to Ruan Mei, he's always been curious about life and creation and it became an obsession to him for the same reason as her: death of family. He doesn't want to become a god because he's a chrysos heir; that would imply that that achievement is because of a prophecy and not his own ability. He wants to ascend by his own merit and prove that becoming a god is attainable by humans through his methodology. I think this too would help answer his questions about life. Outside the realm of Amphoreus, I have no doubt he would attract the gaze of Nous; maybe even unwanted.
Thats what separates Anaxa from Ratio; he doesn't care if he has the blessing or gaze from a god or aeon, he just cares about his own research. Much in the same vein as Ruan Mei who attracted the gaze of Nous without even noticing until she looked up from her work.
I love both Anaxa and Ruan Mei, they are very similar characters with similar ambition but their dispositions are so different that it's difficult to even tell. They both are such complex characters and I hope more parallels are drawn between them in the future of the story.

loving this character isn’t enough I need to unhinge my jaw and sink my teeth into them
I think it is particularly interesting how Aventurine's relationships with Jade and Topaz were depicted in 2.3.
At the risk of inciting the wrath of Aventurine/Topaz shippers (I'm sorry, everyone can ship what they want; this particular ship just isn't for me!), their interactions were framed in a very familial manner, at least when Aventurine was involved.
Jade is clearly projecting herself as a mother figure for him, directly calling him "child," a "kid," and taking on a disciplinarian role such as in this scene, where she nabs both their room keys to stop them from whining at each other. On Jade's end, this is very deliberate--given what we know of her cornerstone ability, she can almost certainly see the void that Aventurine's mother's death left in his life, and she is intentionally acting in a maternal manner in order to ensure his compliance and respect. (Personally, I'm of the opinion that Aventurine is smart enough to clock this manipulation tactic, but also that he's going along with it because why not? He was going to be manipulated anyway, might as well get free mom out of it.)
Topaz, meanwhile, definitely feels like she's being cast in the "annoyed sibling" role, particularly in this scene where they squabble so much the Trailblazer can't get a word in edgewise and Jade has to step in as the parent figure to correct their behavior.
Although the relationship is clearly different than the kind and supportive one we saw between young Kakavasha and his older sister, the "siblings fighting over a toy" and "sister irritated by bratty brother" vibe (I am such a sister myself, I feel this dynamic in my bones) was out in full force in 2.3, creating a very strong parallel to the missing sister figure in Aventurine's life.
I just think it is particularly interesting that the hole in Aventurine's heart was created primarily by the loss of his mother and sister--and then 2.3 suggests echoes of those exact roles being filled by other women who have stepped into his female relatives' places.
Given her maneuvering to fill the mother role on purpose, I have to wonder if Jade didn't also have something to do with Aventurine's connection to Topaz (clearly another favorite of Jade's). Did she help to cultivate this friendship and sibling-esque rivalry between them on purpose, with an end goal in mind?
It seems to me that it would be much more difficult for Aventurine to cut ties with the IPC if the Stonehearts were providing him with not only wealth and power but also a simulacrum of the very family he wanted to die to meet again...
Just sayin'.
this is manipulation on a whole other level i love it and hate it
