They never explore the sheer horror and tragedy of Astro Boy as much as they should.

Imagine you're a child. Your life seems normal, albeit your father is a bit neglectful because he's absorbed in his work. One day, your father suddenly becomes incredibly attached to you. He takes leave from work, he starts homeschooling you. He wants to spend all of his time with you. But it only lasts a week. Maybe a month at best. He becomes cold again. You're not his real child, he complains. Just a pale imitation.

You find out then that you died. You were hit by a car and your body was mangled. But you're still here? No, you're not. You're a robot. But you remember being human. You know you were human. You remember growing up.

The memories are fake. The real you is dead and gone and your father, this stranger, built you in a mad attempt to bring his child back. He doesn't love you. In fact, he despises you. Just looking at you makes him want to puke. But Dad, I love you, you say. He screams at you to leave. You're not my child.

He wants nothing to do with you. He sells you to a robot circus, where they're tortured and electrocuted into obedience. You can feel all of that pain. You were programmed to feel pain and emotions, just like a human. Every night when you try to sleep, you feel a pain in your chest where your heart used to be. Do you even have a soul now? You've lost everything and it wasn't even your fault.

What's interesting about gender swapping characters, is it makes you examine what aspects of a character are inherent to their nature, and which are related to their upbringing. Is Daphne vain, or does she give attention to her appearance because prettiness is highly valued in women? Would a male daphne focus more on being well-groomed or cultivating a muscular physique? You also have to examine how things like hair color are gendered. Generally a red-haired female character is pretty and/or wilful, but a red-haired male character is comic relief. Does Daphne become more comedic after a gender swap? Does her hair turn brown? Does she become more of a leading man or a male damsel in distress? The answers reflect the biases and influences of the person rebuilding the characters, and there's more than one way to do it.

Then there's stuff like, does Fred being conventionally masculine mean that a gender-swapped Fred should be conventionally feminine? Or should the character keep the buff build?

I think one way you could make a gender swapped Velma interesting is that you tweak Vilhelm's interests and expertise so that traditionally feminine topics or qualities come more to the forefront. He can identify that white powder as baking soda, sugar, salt, baking powder, etc on sight because he bakes with his grandmother; sometimes he wears a dumpy old fashioned apron with little orange flowers on it. He has an extensive butterfly collection, but since he can't bear to actually pin them, it's all catch and release, and his collection is a heavily annotated photo library. So a little less well-read/bookish and a little more "boy with a thousand hobbies", though still with a scientific bent.

You could also tweak the character by having him be hard of hearing instead of severely myopic; perhaps he keeps dropping his hearing aid or it gets knocked off. Which isn't strictly linked to gender, but ultimately, what is?

Anyway here's my take on a genderswapped scooby gang and I think Vilhelm is still interesting. My favorite is Shaggy though. Much like how canon Shaggy will wear a dress and wig for the sake of a sandwich, female Shaggy will wear a mustache at the drop of a burger.
