Y’all know that I’m into ancient Roman history and I do a lot of research on it but even though I should be used to it by now sometimes I read an anecdote about how an individual slave was treated and I’m hit with the realization that like a third of the population was living like that and I just need to put my head in my hands for a second

Emperor Hadrian randomly stabbed a slave in the eye in a fit of rage and he was supposedly unusually sympathetic to slaves.

There’s other instances of people randomly punching slaves that they didn’t even know because they got in their way or something. This was just normal behavior.

And slaves didn’t rebel en masse because if even one slave committed an act of violent rebellion it was common practice to kill every slave and former slave in the household.

People only took notice for posterity when these mass executions got into the hundreds of people. One of the few recorded for the history books is of over 400 people being killed because one guy stabbed his enslaver.

Like how many people throughout history were beaten to death because some rich asshole was angry and there was no legal or social consequences for doing so? We don’t know.

For freelancers: I recommend getting yourself a copy of the Graphic Artists' Guild Handbook: Pricing and Ethical Guidelines for reference-- the newest one dropped last year (I have the 16th edition). It helps you figure out your pricing, how to create a contract for various projects (and you can access free PDFs of templates you can use to modify for your own projects)! It's a good place to start and refer to-- even colleagues who are decades in the business (and former Guild Members too) still use it.

Collins is gone.

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.

Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.

All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.

After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.

It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.

And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.

The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.

Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.

ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.

Other places to consider donating to are Mikinakoos Emergency Fund, Red Cross, True North Aid, Indigenous Climate Action. You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.

So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,

And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.

And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?

But nope, that's not the case:

thoughts on Interview with the Vampire s3e3!

I'm an observer, not a shipper, and all my book knowledge is secondhand

I agree with some praise and some criticism, and I think s1 was near perfect (but had some fractures that could lead to possible later, larger faults) and s2 was overall very good until the very rushed finale

I'm interested in seeing the trajectory of how everything plays out

Fun to hear Lestat describe each city.

Appreciate how the show is still not afraid of going full genre, with gore as well as camp

I think a few beats needed to be held for full impact to match the excellent tone of s1, but it could be budget/other constraints

In the moment, the montage of Claudia's words over Lestat's actual memory of being assaulted was extremely effective. However, within the show as a whole, it's quite uncomfortable on many levels to use her experience to illustrate his feelings. Textual continuation of "it was never about me!" or an unfortunate pattern of the show itself? Especially with no more Black writers in the writers' room, etc.

At least her words literally killed Bruce. Not sure where this Regina plotline will lead but I did gasp.

Hoping hoping hoping so much that the show will continue what this episode showed and lean towards Lestat not realizing /denying/realizing too late that he echoed some of the worst aspects of the people who hurt him in how he tried to control Louis and Claudia. Some ppl are trying to defend it as purely protective and no. Nuance, folks. As per a recent Tumblr post - he will never be Laura Palmer!

She seemed fine when I watched the premiere, but when I found out that Baby Jenks had been a teen who killed her abusive parents in the books, it's kind of disgusting to age her up and sexualize her and make her seemingly Bruce's vengeful widow? I did like the hint of respectful tone when Lestat called her "The Prophet Jenks." Hoping they don't go the expected route here

Will wait for the longer view to judge the writing of Gabrielle. How long will it take vampire blood to cure herpes contact? She's playing a long game.

The coven biting Nicki took place offscreen, so I think Armand came out a tad less cruel in the flashback than when Lestat said in S1 that "he had Nicki's hands cut off"

Intrigued by the recurring theme of vampirism heightening obsession:

Daniel - pushing for the story. The journalist instinct that saved him led him further into hunting for a traumatic break - and led him further into Lestat's trap

Arun/Armand - so many obsessions with this guy. I also wanted to shout at the TV (positive!) at the end of the ep.

Lestat - craves expression and affection, on a different wavelength than Armand. Is the reason he's probably still continuing the tour despite getting realistic about ticket sales

Gabriella - the worst extreme of Boy Mom! But also the freedom she only felt after death. Probably why she's bent on the Great Conversion. AMC might not show her genderbending, but maybe some feral nature? Also, telling Daniel and crew she's Sofia is a funny parallel with the Rashid business

Louis - while it's great that Bruce is gone and that Louis made him "feel small", I think this will not be great for him or for honoring Claudia's memory. Sad cus I liked seeing him in a healthier place, Lemuel phone pic and all. Though this grief and anger was always lurking for the Talamasca to exploit.

Personally, as a non-shipper, I feel like Louis trying to reconcile with Lestat is him reconciling with his vampirism. Hoping the show emphasizes that the vampires try to reconcile (or at least get back on better terms with) ppl who hurt them because they have to think of more years ahead than mortal humans

Owning shares of the merch is so petty and hilarious. We're all much more forgiving of capitalism and cruelty when it comes from Louis.
