A month ago, our soulmate was hospitalized after vomiting blood. The diagnosis that followed was stage 3c stomach cancer, with fluid buildup in the brain.

After talking it through together, they have chosen to focus on quality of life rather than aggressive treatment, and we’re honoring that choice completely. What we’re asking for now is help making the time we have left as calm and steady as possible.

They were working before this, now they’re on disability leave, and we’re both getting by on disability benefits, which doesn’t stretch far. Our water was recently shut off, and we’re about $2,000 in debt from that alone. Groceries and dog care are a daily stress. They need RSO (cannabis oil) every morning and night to manage nausea, and that cost adds up fast. We also need to figure out speaking to a death doula and make sure that we have care set up in that regard.

On top of the day-to-day, we’re facing real transportation costs; trips for pain management treatment, grief counseling, and the practical work of getting affairs in order. None of these things are optional right now.

So, their caseworker cut them off of benefits without warning because their physician only gave their caseworker information about their prognosis and left out how it would affect them in the workplace (they are obviously not able to return to work). They have an appointment with said physician on the 20th but we don’t know if they’ll resubmit after that.

We really need help— we were just able to get rent paid via. money we borrowed from their sibling, which we need to pay back, and we also have to survive somehow in the meantime. The dogs need food very soon and so do we, plus we’ve already fallen behind on bills.

Thank you for any help thus far 🖤 we honestly wouldn’t have been able to make it this far without help, and the scary part is is that we won’t be able to make it further without help either.

I've been working as a frontline social worker serving people experiencing homelessness and at-risk youth for seven years. During that time, I've never taken more than a week off work, even when I was hospitalized with Type 1 diabetes.

Right now, I'm struggling in ways that I haven't before. I'm struggling to accomplish work tasks, to empathize with my clients, and to show up every day to be a support. I am exhausted, experiencing severe burnout. My clients are vulnerable people, often other trans people, and I simply can't provide them the care they deserve while I'm in this state.

I've taken emergency mental health leave to address burnout, suicidal ideation, and substance use. My state's paid leave program is a wonderful resource, but payments can take time, as long as a month from today when I file. Until then, I'm worried about covering rent, groceries, and other basic expenses.

I don't want to return to full-service sex work to bridge that gap. It has been traumatic for me, and doing so again would mean putting myself back into situations I've worked hard to leave behind.

I was in Mormon brain jail concurrently to when Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped and held, as it turned out, like 20 miles away from us. We would see billboards when we were driving past in our big white institution van, and we would see magazines in the checkout aisle, on the rare occasions we were allowed to enter shops accompanied, about Elizabeth Smart being held somewhere by some guy. This teenage girl who had been kidnapped and brainwashed and held basically in the next valley over. I don't remember how long she was with him, but this was when everyone was freshly looking for her and panicking about how she had been abducted and was being held against her will and brainwashed. Her picture was EVERYWHERE.

So. Imagine dozens of other teenage girls, being held against their will and brainwashed in Utah, seeing these billboards and going, "huh. I'm having a complicated emotional reaction to all of this. It's possible that I might unpack that in two to three decades."

Both of these situations arise from the same societal attitudes. This guy wanted a teenage girl to be trapped with him and unable to leave, regardless of her feelings on the matter, and for her to act a certain way and comply with his desires. He took her from her home and forced her to be somewhere she did not want to be and would not let her go, and he tried to turn her into a different thing. The difference in societal reactions to when one specific, unauthorized guy does this, compared to when someone's parents pay a fancy sounding institution to do it for them, tells you a lot about how we think about the autonomy of teenage girls.

In Utah, the reason these types of institutions are allowed is because their youth rights laws are abysmal even compared to the rest of the US. Children aren't people, they're the property of their parents. Elizabeth Smart's parents didn't want her to be kidnapped, so it was bad. Our parents did want us to be kidnapped, so it was fine.

Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapper’s crime was that he didn’t go through the established system for kidnapping and brainwashing teenage girls. This is not even a little bit hyperbolic.

Trying to keep this short, but I have several surgeries coming up, and a PET scan which will tell me if i have cancer. They're thinking i have lymphoma. No updates aside from the fact that my surgeon didn't wanna do the biopsy now that I have a PET scan scheduled. She said the PET scan will be more definitive than the biopsy, as biopsies are often negative with lymphoma anyways. This is all still urgent and progress has stopped.
