pathetic wet men collection (6/?)
Today I found a hair in my food. It was my sister's. She made the paneer chilly I mixed into my rice. I love her.

extra:
Every new name you come up with for the wedding planning fic brings me so much joy! I’m looking forward to it and excited to hear it’s getting so long. Thanks for all you do to bring us that good good emotional complexity.
oh man I had to go back and look at all the names I’ve used for it so far because I was curious, what I found was
seating charts as a substitute for emotional processing: the fic
jiang cheng plans a wedding to cope: the fic
jiang cheng copes with his emotional damage by working on seating arrangements
sibling reconciliation, brother-in-laws from hell, and Jiang Cheng trying to sort through his feelings while acknowledging them as little as possible
some people? plan weddings?? to cope???
a fic that is solely built around really awkward interpersonal relationships
jiang cheng, wedding planner holy terror: the fic
now I’m going to keep having to come up with different ones for every time I mention this fic, just to keep it going.
also it’s funny to me that I refer to this as the wedding planning fic when like. 90% of it is just ‘really uncomfortable conversations jiang cheng doesn’t want to have,’ also a whole bunch of ‘a family can be a man, his nephew, his adopted brother, his adopted brother’s husband, his adopted brother’s adopted son, his adopted brother’s adopted son’s cousin (maybe), and possibly his adopted brother’s husband’s brother’
in honor of finally having a version of this fic about ready to post (stay tuned!) additional alternate descriptions for this fic that have come up since:
event planning means never having to say you’re sorry
the ‘if you can’t talk to your brother about your feelings, throw him a wedding’ fic
the ‘jiang cheng spends over 100 pages figuring out how to live in the past a little less’ fic
‘event planning as therapy, sort of: the fic’
the ‘wedding planning isn’t therapy’ fic
Idk how to photograph art BUT today I painted fanart for @blondejaneblonde 's very good fic:
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Somewhere in an alternate scum villain universe everyone's opinion of Shen Jiu is the exact same except for his fellow Qing Jing Peak disciples because they see him as some sort of heaven sent protector from The Bai Zhan Brutes.
Or: the Qing Jing disciples were getting their asses kicked until Shen "Fight dirty is always the strategy" Jiu showed up and was like "stick your fingers in their eyes" or "kick them in the balls"
A hastily translated book of the Atlantic side chapter. Thanks for sharing the raws @her-majestys-watchdog ! I know the quality isn’t the best and the translation isn’t 100%, but I really wanted to know what it said, so I went ahead and did a quick translation. Sorry I couldn’t read some of the smaller text!
(Thanks for doing the formatting as I read it to you @wisdomoftheshire)
But OMG. Can you imagine how much that verse's JGY must've appreciated JC calling him "my best person," how JC didn't abandon him after his admission. You can also see the how JC's more confident w/o the constant comparisons from his parents. So many ways if the Wens do attack, though. JGY could be to JC what he was to NMJ, or put that lying skill to use. And oh god, what if the truth comes out and JFM is alive to know it... So much potential drama! THIS IS SO GOOD. Thank you for writing this.

[mdzs] Analysis of Jiang Cheng’s name and character traits
After my previous posts on WWX and LWJ’s names (now LSZ’s and LXC’s also), I decided to do another one on Jiang Cheng, as I think this reference sheds so much light on his significance in the story.
Jiang Cheng’s name derives from a poem by renowned Tang Dynasty poet Du Mu. “云阔烟深树,江澄水浴秋” (yún kuò yān shēn shù, jiāng chéng shuǐ yù qiū) translates to “vast clouds and mists entwine the deep forest trees; autumn bathes in the clear river”. Cheng (澄) itself means “to make [sth] clear and unclouded”.
The poem paints a vivid picture of autumn’s colours dancing on the clear water. Interestingly, the phrase 秋水 (directly meaning autumn waters), is used to describe a longing gaze, deriving from the Chinese idioms 秋水伊人 (meaning the friend one is longing for) and 望穿秋水 (meaning await with great anxiety).
My heart aches at this discovery. Doesn’t this bring to mind JC’s plight of persuading WWX to abandon the dark and perilous demonic path, his envy of WWX and LWJ’s relationship, the months he spent waiting anxiously for his return from the Burial Mounds, and looking after Chen Qing for 13 years whilst keeping faith that one day he might see his brother again? JC’s father chose his name to mean “clear, untarnished”, however throughout his life he lived in WWX’s shadow... he hid his true feelings towards him behind brash words in life and raging condemnation in death.
Jiang Cheng’s zi, or courtesy name Wan Yin (晚吟), comes from a poem by another Tang Dynasty poet Xu Hui. “茶香秋梦后,松韵晚吟时” (chá xiāng qiū mèng hòu, sōng yùn wǎn yín shí) translates to “I wake from a hazy nap in autumn, enshrouded by the fragrant aroma of tealeaves; at dusk I saunter and recite poetry, the pine branches swaying in time”. The words Wan (晚) means “at night” and Yin (吟) means “to recite” or “to cry/lament”. The poem’s depiction of a deep sense of abstruse melancholy – as the poet spends his days in Autumn idly, being indifferent to the world – is widely quoted by Chinese literati of today’s age.
To me, this is a great depiction of how lost and despondent JC would have been the first few years after WWX’s death. Let’s not forget that he is the only surviving character in the story who lost every single person dear to him the moment WWX died – it’s hard to imagine how he managed to rebuild the Sect without anyone by his side...
Bonus trivia: Both JC’s birth and courtesy names are taken from scenic moments set in Autumn. In Chinese tradition, the Autumn season is associated with the emotions of both courage (霜气横秋) and sadness (秋风落叶), the act of mourning (秋祭), and is also connected to the Westward direction, often considered to be the direction of dreams and enlightenment. These words depict JC’s key events in mdzs – courage when he saved WWX from the Xuan Wu cave, sadness when WWX defected from the Jiang Sect, mourning when he lost all his loved ones, and enlightenment when he found out about the golden core and finally resolved his inner turmoil.
I have to add that gender euphoria for cis people doesn't always come from like, conforming to your gender in a "stereotypical" way
I've always been very comfortable with my gender but I didn't Really Like being a woman until I cut my hair short and started dressing/presenting more "masculine."
When i realized that I could look "manly" as a woman I truly felt comfortable and really...more "like" a woman. I enjoy being masculine and it strengthens my connection to womanhood and it's just kinda cool
potentially controversial opinion incoming
sam vimes’s natural anti-drunkenness (being knurd) is described as seeing the world the way it actually is, without all the comforting illusions people have for themselves. having a witch’s First Sight means that “you can see what really is there.” granny weatherwax says that evil starts with treating people as things, and, often but especially vividly in Feet of Clay, sam demonstrates repeatedly that he will not stand for the golems being treated as less than people, for the poor being treated as disposable by the rich and powerful, for anyone thinking that anyone else doesn’t matter. the hiver gets inside tiffany aching and reveals the Chalk in her soul. the summoning dark gets inside sam vimes and finds a city in there. and sam vimes knows how to be selfish, to claim his city and his people as his, to protect them. witches watch over people who are frequently small-minded and ungrateful and stubborn and they do it anyway because it’s what you do, because it needs to be done; and sam vimes says pretty much the same thing every time he considers the people of ankh-morpork. and you can call him mister vimes, but only if you’ve earned it.
doylist conclusion: terry pratchett knew what his taste in protagonists was
watsonian conclusion: vimes is an urban witch and ankh-morpork is his steading gods damn it
#also important to this theory is that vimes would absolutely fucking hate this
good tag op
sam vimes hates his fancy armor because it hides his witch hat. Tiffany Aching once felt all the way down into the Chalk to all the little things that made it. sam vimes can feel wherever he is in his city by the soles of his feet. sam vimes knows that a badge is just a hat and behind it is just grit. Sam Vimes isn’t just the witch of ankh-morpork, Sam Vimes takes his steading with him wherever he goes because it’s in his boots.
I’ll leave this with two quotes:
“A witch ought never to be frightened in the darkest forest, Granny Weatherwax had once told her, because she should be sure in her soul that the most terrifying thing in the forest was her.”
“What kind of human creates his own policeman?” “One who fears the dark.” “And so he should,” said the entity, with satisfaction. “Indeed. But I think you misunderstand. I am not here to keep the darkness out. I am here to keep it in.” There was a clink of metal as the shadowy watchman lifted a dark lantern and opened its little door. Orange light cut through the blackness. “Call me… the Guarding Dark. Imagine how strong I must be.” The Summoning Dark backed desperately into the alley, but the light followed it, burning it. “And now,” said the watchman, “get out of town.”
WAIT I JUST REALIZED THAT THE OFFICIAL/REVISED RELEASE SKIPPED OVER AN ENTIRE SECTION OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS IN THE ORIGINAL
“Nothing,” Wei Wuxian said, merry. “Lan Zhan, you really are a good person.”
Lan Wangji, seemingly unsure as to how he should respond to this, shot him a strange look.
Wei Wuxian continued speaking. “And I just realized, how can I be this bad? Even as a kid, I was bad. If I apologize to you now, would it be too late?”
At this, Lan Wangji raised an eyebrow, a rare moment of expressiveness from him. “Apologize?”
In the past, each time this person would demand that he apologize, his wrongdoings would only escalate in magnitude. “Don’t look at me like that,” Wei Wuxian said. “I’m being serious. Ah, forget it. Let’s not bring up old debts, shall we?”
Looking back now, it’s hard not to feel guilty for what he’s done when they were both young.
“It’s probably because he’s always so stoic… that I can’t help but love seeing him lose his composure,” Wei Wuxian thought. “That’s probably why I always felt the need to tease him so. Really, I was terrible!”
It’s good, then, that Lan Zhan never truly hated him.
It is strange: even though they were supposed to be on the run, Wei Wuxian couldn’t feel even the slightest bit nervous. Riding a donkey and being led by Lan Wangji, his heart felt light, as though it were floating in his chest. In this moment, feeling like this, even if they were to be attacked and ambushed right now, it really wouldn’t seem like such a big deal.
