i have a secret third opinion about self dx discourse which is “why are you guys treating the DSM like it’s the fucking bible”
the amount of leftists who uncritically support the DSM-5—wielding it online in battles against random individuals who might be “faking” a disorder—boggles my fucking mind. you guys realize that the DSM-5 isn’t the only diagnostic manual on the planet, right? you realize that we place it at the top of the global hierarchy because it’s american, right? has it occurred to you that the APA shouldn’t have so much authority over what counts as a “real” mental illness? has it occurred to you that perhaps there are other diagnostic manuals? in fact, there are dimensional models that don’t rely on sorting individuals into “disorder/no disorder” boxes in the first place. food for thought, lmao
when i got my assessment for borderline personality disorder, my psychiatrist told me that even though i had all the relevant symptoms and experiences, he didn't want to initially diagnose me because. and i'm not fucking with you. he said part of the diagnostic criteria for bpd is the inability to improve.
i said sorry?? pardon?? and he said that while everything was pointing to bpd, the fact that i had been slowly improving my symptoms through therapy twice a week meant that i couldn't have bpd. because people with bpd are incapable of change, growth, or bettering their circumstances.
i was aghast. i told him that didn't make any sense, that every mental illness can be improved with treatment and care, but he said the fact that i wanted to improve was a mark AGAINST my diagnosis.
that day changed the way i thought about psychiatric health forever. there are ableist prejudices baked in to every part of it

David Byrne is 74 today.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVID BYRNE!!!
Whimsy drawing aside, I wanted to say a few words about how much David means to me. He has inspired me in both life and art. His music has offered me comfort, joy, freedom, as well as everything he has created including his drawings, doodles, plays and of course his music and movie, True Stories. He is constantly innovating and creating. I resonate with David a lot, we're both autistic, he never hid his true-self and that helped me so much through the years, and still does. I can be myself, too, and that's okay. A concept that might be simple for some, but it is extremely hard for others, specially with so much hate in the world. But David adds happiness to this world, and that is what I love about him. He shares his unique vision of the world towards music, drawings, Instagram posts, appreciating all the little creatures and things.
I wish him all the best in the world. He's a beautiful person with a beautiful soul. Happy birthday to you, king of new wave, big suit guy, Uh-Oh dog owner, Broadway performer, cowboy.
yeah, it's fancy driving alright!
David Byrne's first and only cinematic masterpiece released 39 years ago, so here's a poster I made for my favorite movie! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRUE STORIES!!!
