It’s an extremely popular opinion among middle and upper class white people.
Also, aside from this completely uneducated reasoning as to why minimum wage was created…
I can guarantee that there are tens of thousands of teenagers who have to pay bills and help support their families or are the only financial supporter to their family.
not to mention, if minimum wage was meant solely for high school students how would the business survive when students are in school?? are they only supposed to be open on the weekend? this “unpopular opinion” makes no sense.
Unpopular fact: in the 70s a minimum wage worker could pay for college with a summer job.
Unpopular fact: minimum wage was conceived to be the minimum amount of money a person would need to support themselves and their families when working 40 hours per week.
Unpopular fact: minimum wage was created because working men and women in this nation fought–figuratively in the negotiating room and literally in the streets–for a fair working wage, with sweat and blood and tears and death.
Unpopular fact: military service personnel are not the only people who have fought and died for your rights as American: labor leaders and common workers laid down their lives so that you could have a 40 hour work week instead of 80 hours; so you could have a 2 day weekend instead of none; so you could have lunch and bathroom breaks instead of going hungry and shitting your pants,; so you could have a three day weekend in September.
Capitalism would NEVER dole out basic human decency without literal human sacrifice.
If minimum wage is only supposed to be for high school students, it should be illegal to pay that little to anyone who’s older than 18.
Even trees are petrified
A friend of mine said that they’d move on without me and to prepare myself for that eventuality.
They said, “Your sister won’t have time; maybe your brother drops a line every month or so with a meme he knows you’ll like.”
They said “We’ll all leave you behind. It’s time you face it. The truth is only hard ‘til you embrace it: then it’s flesh and bone inside. Yes, growing up is scary— even trees are petrified.”
And it’s true I know it’s coming:
We’ll make plans and they’ll cancel last minute. They’ll phone to call the theatre off once I’m already in it. They’ll get married, have careers, start families— they’ll have someone to turn to and that someone won’t be me.
So they all leave me behind? It’s time I face it. The truth is only hard ‘til you embrace it: then it’s flesh and bone inside.
Yes, growing up is scary— even trees are petrified.
OH WOW THIS IS BEAUTIFUL
Media: It’s so hot! Sweltering!! Record breaking heat unlike anything we’ve ever seen!!! Who could have possibly predicted this???
Climatologists:
Vehophobia (fear of driving) is probably one of the most rational fears to have
Things I Find Comforting:
1. Tomorrow will happen. Even if the heart skips, the sun stalls, the cold creeps, the stomach falls. Nothing is necessary for tomorrow to happen. 2. The end you imagine is not the end of everything. When the skyscrapers are overgrown with what might have once been grass and the deer lifts its obligatory second head, or if deer are gone and roaches are gone and bacteria is gone there are still stars. No matter how bad, something survives. 3. Perspective is limited. I can only see the sun rise from a certain point, a certain time, but the sun somewhere is always rising. 4. The sun, to itself, is still. 5. Everything is temporary. Something endures. 6. Language shapes reality. Humans shape language. We all shape each other’s reality. You and I have so much power. 7. Everything I know is wrong and tiny. 8. There are people who know more than me out there. There are people who are kinder than me out there. There are people doing more than me out there. And they are all making differences that don’t hinge on me. 9. Everything is temporary. Something endures.
Giethoorn in Netherlands has no roads or any modern transportation at all, only canals. Well, and 176 bridges too. Tourists have to leave their cars outside of the village and travel here by foot or boat by. So you can probably imagine how peaceful it is here.
Billy joel could write like 5 more parts of We Didn’t Start the Fire form just recent events alone.
This will be our new lives if capitalism continues to exist
Just so you all know, the fire was likely caused by a private electric company, that essentially has a monopoly here, and could have been prevented if they shut off power in that area for only a few hours.
They chose not to because they wanted to maximize profit potential. This was more important to them than the entire town of Paradise.
No Corporation is your friend. No Corporation will ever care about the good of others unless it is profitable to do so.
I live here and I can verify the statement above and add that this is PG&E’s fault and that they’ve lobbied against much need infrastructure upgrades.
A reminder: The big Atlas Fire that happened in 2017 (and took out a good chunk of the city of Santa Rosa and came within 10 yards of my family’s homes) was also because PG&E didn’t feel like spending the money to clear lines or shutting off power for a few hours during a windstorm.

I just spammed my FB page with these…not sorry.
…I almost killed myself
I put on my sunglasses, to hide my swollen eyes, over my tears. I cried all my makeup off. Went inside to have a milkshake. I don’t know why. I wanted something to drink as I figured out what I would do. I got a soda and a milkshake. Medium. The cashier looked at me and with a line around the corner of the counter he rushed away from the counter “Hold on “ he yelled to a coworker.
I filled my soda and went back and saw him looking all over. I go up and he gets close and says “I made it a large”.
That was seriously enough for me not to do it. His kindness. Someone went out of their way and as I went back in my car to cry I realized I could muster through a few other days. A few more weeks. Then I came down from that panicky high of anxiety, depression, and pain. I finished my shake. And it was enough time to let me feel better. I… I’m alive. I’ll make it through.
Try and be nice today. Tomorrow. Something as much as a smile. It helped so much.
Thank you man at McDonalds.
The milkshake saved my life
I hope you all can read this and remember to be kind
The smallest of gestures can save a life. My Mum answered her phone when I called and I am alive today because of that.
I’m glad you’re here.
It’s a phone call, a milkshake, a friend.
I feel like I shouldn’t keep reblogging this but when I do more people see what kindness can do…. I don’t know. Love everyone as yourself.
Nah, keep rebloging it. It gives hope.
walked sobbing around a city once wearing a summer dress in mid-september thunder and rain. basically dragged myself into LUSH as the smell of the store always made me smile. the shop was empty and dead due to the weather, just this blonde short woman behind the counter who smiled at me. i stared at her feet and asked ‘do you have anything for people who are scared a lot?’ (i was so out of it i had no clue). she showed me two bath bombs, one pink and one blue, and said both were good - i chose the pink, paid for it and left. i then sat at a bus stop clutching the LUSH bag in one arm and my prescription meds in the other - i’d lied and ordered a refill so i could just drift away with sleeping pills. when the bus arrived and i was out of the rain, i decided to have another look at my bath bomb, smell it and what not. opened my bag and saw she’d put the blue one in there for me as well and written on the receipt ‘feel better soon :) hope you like x’.
no one had ever been so selflessly kind to me before, i didn’t know what to do with it except hang around long enough to use the other bath bomb.
Actually I’m going to reblog this again because of the truth of the inverse: think of any time you have been casually cruel or petty to someone for humor or because you weren’t in a great mood.
The power of small gestures goes both ways.
