Paper cut outs for final task

Experiment 1
oils and acrylics on primed canvas 16 x 20
experimenting with layering colours on top of each other. Acrylics on top of dried oils. Letting the oils shine through by thinning the paint to a translucent layer of green.
Great combination of oil and acrylic here by Jelske. I’m also enjoying the very specific colour scheme here of muted terracottas and greens.
Last assemblage idea. I’m thinking this or the first idea. I love the colours and the wood texture in the background. I love the old photography as well, could create some interesting inspiration.
These nostalgic collages remind me a little of the assemblages made including paintings by the artist and painter Kai Althoff.

For my expansive abstraction, I have begun painting an old pair of converse that I’ve had for a couple years now. They have traveled the world with me and hold a lot of memory connected to important experiences in my life. I wanted to use this as my support as a way to abstract upon my original collage that I have made. I created this collage surrounding feelings I’ve had about the path of my life, and the choices I am making. The nervousness about joining the real world, working at in career and wondering if I am making the wrong choices. I felt that using my converse, which have experienced much of my early adult years, hold the energy of my collage and add an element to overall meaning.
I first cleaned and gessoed the shoes with a few layers (first photo), which took a couple days to be fully dry and covered. I didn’t exactly have a plan immediately. I wanted it to come to me as a I worked, sort of matching the real energy of the world. Everyone in my life has always said “you can’t plan for life”, so I wanted to take this to heart and allow the paint to take me. I have painted over both shoes a couple of times, in different areas or the entirety of it, as I’d get part way into something and despise the color scheme or design. The above photos are what I have currently, however I don’t love the shoe on the left, and might paint over portions again. I rather enjoy this construct and destruct method. The shoe on the right I really like. I think this will be the one side that is simple, and captures the rest of the designs.
There are some interesting correlations here with the work of Paul Thek possibly. Grace might use him as one of her 2 contemporary artist examples for her final works. Thek often painted on 3D forms and also used rainbow colour schemes in various versions.

2 Different Assembles + Painting from Assemblage
love this semi-abstraction - or semi-figuration! reminds me of Dana Schutz’ paintings. Or Moya Mckenna (Australian, recent exhibition held at neon parc Melbourne)
Post from Jelena’s painting class, love this suggestive assemblage!
Assemblage Painting 3 & 4
With expansive abstraction in mind I wanted to recreate the floral patterns observed in the third assemblage. The first painting references the background floral layer of the work but abstracted even further focusing purely on shape and colour. The second painting mimics the floral pattern found on the two vases and is busy in it’s placement. I think these experiments were successful however I would like to focus on composition in the future.
Beautiful paintings by Nyah from her assemblages!
For my recreation, I started out painting with acrylic on paper, to develop the color palette. Once I felt more comfortable in the painting I wanted to recreate, I cleaned the stickers off a wine bottle and that had a lovely light blue tint to it. I also noticed while photographing it blank, that the bottle had an inner layer of glass that was distorted inwards, which I thought would have a cool effect as I painted around it.
This piece required a lot of paint. I didn’t want to create a base layer with white as I didn’t want to ruin the alluring opacity of the bottle. It took about 4 separate sessions to get this scene painted, as the paint had to be fully dry before adding another layer, otherwise it would just pull the wait right off. Additionally, blending colors was quite difficult, as it had to be done before it dried at all. Overall, I quite love how it came out and would like to explore more unique canvases and how they can contribute to the piece themselves.
Love seeing how Grace is diverging already from her original collage into these paintings on wine bottles! Great experiments for assessment 2!
Inspired by Jana Euler’s relationship between art, the object and the gesture i explored ways to investigate the Coronavirus cell. I worked with ideas of excess, saturation and texture to show the current conscious and the notion of beauty vs grotesque. I turned towards other artists such as Ernst Haeckler and John Armleder to help guide this investigation.
Nice documenting of process here by Bianca.

Great experiments by Nyah based on her assemblage!
Gradients, blur techniques, off colours, line.
Beautifully executed painting here by Danielle! The composition works exceptionally well and you can se she is really focused on developing gradient technique. Might be nice to see a couple of close-ups on this post also.
Assessment 1: Tonal Self Portrait
A moody and mature work here by Nyah for her tonal self-portrait. I’m interested to see how she has used the focus on perspective in front of the figure to direct the viewer’s gaze and the topic of the work.

Week 2 Poster
Darcy, Olivia and myself all began todays exercise by exploring textures, patterns and colouring of surfaces within the COFA campus to see how we could ‘glitch’ them.
We decided the exposed red/brown brick wall would be an ideal location for a poster and set to work to create a poster that resembled it from coloured card and masking tape.
We then installed this poster in the location to disrupt/obstruct the aesthetic of the aesthetic of the brick wall. Below are some of the ways we installed this poster.
This poster worked to obstruct the brick and grout system of the constructed wall, and thus ‘glitches’ it through breaking the repeated pattern.
Fab idea and documentation!
excellent work here responding to ‘glitch’
Fantastic experimentation towards assessment 1 with really excellent documentation.

studio activity wk 12: chance
this week we explored the method of chance.
i took the most recent text messages i had sent in an act of chance, because i lack direct control over the content of those messages. i then rearranged them in a collage to form some kind of coherent sentence.
this activity could also be used as a practice method for my rationale, because i am taking existing content off of social media and rearranging it to create something new. i really enjoyed the use of physical collage and will be exploring that in my future experiments
I like how visually this experiment gives a subtle sense of irregularly and materiality to the slick, standardised form of a text convo. Keep pushing this @matilda-adad!
Assessment One Final Work
My final work for the Transformations task is my consumption. The task I set out to do was to consume my box, and the final product of my experiments is the act of bodily interaction itself.
I conducted my transformation experiments with the goal of trialling how many ways I could successfully consume a box. Over a week I turned my small postal box into a number of consumable cardboard products, and managed to fulfil their intended consumable purpose to varying degrees.
The results of these experiments varied in their success. They were all consumable in that I managed to put all the transformed box by-products into my body, but the consumption experience was not always a particularly easy task throughout the experimental process. I could barely eat the box pasta, the tough structure of the box restricting its transformation into an edible form. The other box experiments, whilst unpleasant, were much more consumable and easily ingested by my body.
The unpleasant experience of creating my final work leaves me questioning its success. Yes, I consumed my box in a variety of ways, but did I truly transform my box into something consumable? Perhaps in admitting that I would happily never consume a box again I have already answered this question.
Lots of great questions and discussion came out of Ondine’s presentation today - what is it to consume, what kinds of decisions we make when we consume - how oblivious are we to our day to day consumption? Great work!
